Good morning everyone.

Ah, Christmas is done for another year. My best haul was a box of Frango Mints. My sister organized that game where everyone picks a present and then someone can steal it. I think that's the dumbest game, but heck it got me Frango Mints so it worked out. Norm you might be the only other person on here that knows what those are. Department store Marshall Field's made these for years and years. Chocolate and mint, just wonderful. I was afraid after Macy's bought them out that the Frangos wouldn't continue. Now I think they are made by Fannie Mae but they taste the same.

Chris is that saw a Black and Decker? My Dad worked for them selling industrial air tools all across the country. Sad that they are no longer. Stanley owns the name and GE (as far as I know still) owns the small appliance part, but the company itself is done.

Jamesbo that's a nice chainsaw you got there. The next time you have all those trees fall over you'll be in great shape. How long is the bar? I sharpened mine the other day but haven't used it yet.

I have a couple errands to run this afternoon and then I'm going over to my sister's for a little while. Tiger will help Mom with the cooking. Hope everyone survived the holidays and is ready for Amateur's night. Have a good day everyone.

Mike - The saw is made by a company called TACKLIFE. Multiple reviews I read said it could go head to head with Milwaukee or Dewalts with similar features for much less cost. Here's a summary of one of the reviews/features:

12 Inch TACKLIFE Sliding, Dual Bevel, Compound Miter Saw OverviewOur Rating: (4.5/5)

"><img src=" /> ">
  • Very well put together
  • Heavy Duty quality materials
  • Comes with multiple high quality blades
  • Comfortable to use
  • Good safety features
  • Cuts hardwoods and other materials easily
  • Comes with a handful of accessories, including dust collector
  • Powerful 15 Amp, 3800 RPM, durable motor

James - Thanks! I'm figuring you've probably made a 1000 cuts with your's over the years. With her being a relative newbie to woodworking, I figured she could use every feature/advantage she could get that might make it easier for her. I'm no help, because I've never been into woodworking, so she gets most her knowledge from You Tube, and by trial and error.

I hear ya Norm... Attention to detail is MOST important. I really lucked out on hiring a guy up here. He started out repairing a bad set up that the previous owner (also builder) did attaching the deck on this house. Anyway the first couple days he was here I watched him like a hawk, but then I found his house repair knowledge was much better than mine. After a while I just told him to treat my house as if it was his house. I have since had him do a deck, a huge 9' slider door and repaired the holes in ceiling where sky lights used to be. Now I just tell him what I would like done and tell him to do it as he thinks is the best way. It is very convenient and comforting to just let him go at it.

Norm, let me know if you have any ? Remember no nails in flashing on roof unless up at very top.
I'm guessing existing siding is attached so you can not nail flashing to vertical wall.

Good to see that Christmas went well for everyone here. Sorta boring at my brothers house, as there were only four of us. We usually have my sister and her husband, a few nephew's and niece's, plus my great nephew and niece. Nice miter saw Chris, if it matches Milwaukee & DeWalt in quality for less money, then I would say that you can't go wrong. I just filed a complaint with NSHTA ( I may have to check on that acronym). For the last year and a half, I have had what acts like a slipping transmission on the Hyundai when accelerating from a stop or roll. for example, leaving the parking lot at work, I stop before going onto the road there, which has a 55 mph speed limit. I will pull out and try to move quickly to get up to speed, but the car will just roll at about 10-15 mph while the revs climb up to 4-5000 rpm's, at which point I let off of the gas, and hit the throttle again, then it will go like normal. Not good if other traffic is coming. This has happened at least a half dozen times, but not alway's with the engine revving, sometimes it just rolls and does nothing, until I try again. It did it again, when I pulled out of the gas station where I just filled up today. It rev'd to 4000 rpm's while moving at about ten miles an hour. As a car was coming up on me, I stayed on the throttle, and it slowly started picking up speed until I hit the speed limit. About a year ago (November 2019), they replaced a module on the transmission at the dealership, but it did nothing. I dropped it off for a day last July so that they could try and replicate the problem, but to no avail. It is intermittent, and I never know when it will happen. The dealership has been good about it, with no charges so far, but something has to be done before I get into an accident. I checked with a couple of online forums, but I have not seen where anyone else has had this problem.

I can tell you are a man with good taste. I have same shingle on my 1860 victorian Italianate home
Sometimes it is just not worth trying to cut that close to siding without a major screw up.
A trick is to cut a few inches back from wall and install a "nailer" at new created seem and call it a day

Dan, That is a car still under warrantee, I take it? Well even if it's a old car that is a safety issue and needs corrected. Anyway if under warrantee it seems you could leave it at Dealership and they give you a loaner. You drive the loaner as you need it and the service guy drives your car back and forth to work etc until he notices the problem, then hopefully they can fix it. A friend of mine had a intermittent problem years ago with a Ford Bronco II that the dealership gave him a loaner for seems like about 2 months! But they finally did fix it, Good luck!

Dan - We own a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with AWD and the 2.4L motor that is our primary daily driver. In early 2019 we were notified of a recall to have the ECU updated with new software intended to monitor the engine for potential connecting rod bearing failure. I had this done in March 2019. If the monitoring system detects excessive wear or imminent failure, it puts the engine into a protection mode that won't allow the RPM's to exceed 2,000 but will allow you to essentially limp home or to the nearest dealer. Along with the software update, they extended the motor warranty on the longblock assembly to 10-years or 120K- miles, whichever comes first.

Subsequent to the recall above, last year we received notice of a Class Action Lawsuit that was won against Hyundai/Kia for several models including the Sonatas and Santa Fe's with 2.0 and 2.4L motors that included our vehicle. It told you how to receive compensation for any engine repairs or engine fires caused by the excessive connecting rod wear issue I described above. It also offered a bonus rebate if you had simply lost faith in your vehicle and wanted to trade it in on another Hyundai vehicle. They also upped the warranty on the shortblock assembly to a Lifetime Warranty.

We enjoy our Santa Fe and have had no issues with it. For as large as it is, it has a lot of pep from the 2.4L motor, and gets good gas mileage for an AWD equipped vehicle. I regularly get 24 mpg city and 28 or 29 highway. I am torn about whether to unload our car before something major happens related to the known motor defect described above, or to take my chances and hope to fall back on the "Lifetime" shortblock warranty if something does go wrong. The car only has 30K-miles on it right now and we don't put many miles on it now that I've retired. Obviously this story doesn't relate to the issue you've described with your car, other than they're both Hyundai's. I know I've lost faith in the Hyundai brand and will probably never buy another one. I am curious what year/model you have that you're having an issue with?

Good afternoon guys,
It was sunny most of the morning, but has now clouded up. Very warm though for December at 58. Seems like the tropics after a morning low of 11 just 2-days ago.

Well, it was a rough morning due to my own clumsiness. Tomorrow is trash day for us, so I took the trash bag out of the kitchen canister to take outside. When I went to put a new bag in the canister, I didn't realize I was as close to the counter as I was, and when I bent over to put the bag in I busted my forehead on the sharp corner of the counter. Apparently I yelled out and fell to the floor and was out for a few seconds. My wife was in the basement and heard me yell and came running, and I was just coming to when she got there. The impact split the skin about 3/8-inch just below the hairline and I was bleeding like a stuck pig. We couldn't get the bleeding to stop with pressure, and we didn't have any steri-strips in the house to pull it together. I sure didn't want to go to the urgent care for only 1 or 2 stitches, so I told her it's time to get the Super Glue out. We got the bleeding stopped as best we could, and then she put in a few drops and squeezed it together and it held, hallelujah! Just dealing with a dull headache now.

Hope you all had a better and less eventful day I had!

James - Yeah, I would have had to use duct tape, with no surgical or athletic tape in the house. Isn't the 1st time I've used Super Glue either though since they started using it in the Urgent Cares and Emergency Rooms many years ago. One nice thing about the glue is it doesn't come off in the shower.

Hi everyone.

Got home a little while ago from my Mom's. Had a real nice visit with the family and got a few things done around the house. Also brought two big coolers full of my favorite foods home. Can't beat that. Tiger fidgeted in the car the whole way home. He's really too big to sit on the front seat but he refuses to sit in back. He has plenty of room to lay down and stretch out, but he won't do it. If I make him stay back there he scrunches himself into a corner and pouts.

Sunny here but cold. I turned the heat off in the house when I left and it was 45* in here when I got home. Gonna start up the stove to help the furnace warm things up. I had heard we had a dusting of snow here over the weekend, and when I got close to the city I notice the expressway had salt on it. For just a dusting? Well, the stores were probably cleaned out of bread and milk as well.

So yesterday I went and took a picture of the driveway I wanted to. Also went to eat at The Coffee Cup but it was closed. They had a big banner stretched across the porch that said celebrating 75 years. That place is in its own time warp. When I was there before they had a picture of the building with a then late model Cadillac out front, about a 55. The place looks exactly the same now.

And now to wind down and get ready for work tomorrow. Talked to a guy this afternoon who said we were short people last week and more were going to be off this week. Hm, maybe I'm sick. I don't mind taking up for a couple people but half the crew? Poor planning on someone's part.

Okay have a good evening everyone.

This will give me an entire extra day (Thursday) to hopefully finish boarding, flashing and lay down paper - fingers crossed. Wednesday I might work in the afternoon after golf (tee-time @ 8:26 am). It's going to be tough staying away from the golf course this week since the weather is nice. We'll see how well I can manage my time.
I grabbed a roll of flashing today, tomorrow morning I'll head to lumber yard & grab remaining boards I need to finish the wood roofing before heading out for golf (tee-time @ 11:11 am). More or less in order, how the day began & how the day ended.

pm sent. Might want to sister a new pc of 2x4 on that end of rafter at least 4' long

Mike - Glad you had a nice visit with your family and got to bring home a haul of goodies!

Norm - Looks like you continue to make good progress on the roof. You got skills man! You're right about one thing, it's a sad state of affairs when a guy can't even take out the trash without doing major damage to himself.

The discussion you had with Mike about Frango Mints brought up a great childhood memory. Our neighbor across the street from us when I was little was a conductor for Grand Trunk railroad. He was an older bachelor and my Mom would often bake him things when she was baking for our family. I remember him kindly, almost like a 3rd Grandpa. Every year for several years he would get train passes for our whole family to take the train to Chicago so my Mom could Christmas shop at Marshall Fields and other stores. I absolutely loved taking that train ride and seeing the wonder of Marshall Fields at Christmas time!

Chris, I took mine in for the recall as well, and also have the settlement paperwork that was sent later. This problem was not unique to Hyundai. Ford and Honda had a similar problem, and basically is the result of trying to get a small displacement engine do the work of a larger engine in the pursuit of better gas mileage, whether normally aspirated, or with the addition of a turbo or two. The thing with the dealership trying to replicate it, is the fact that it is intermittent. It may go a few weeks before it happens again. I have a couple of scars from whacking my pumpkin, and they always bleed like hell. There are a sh!tload of capillaries on our noggin's, or so I was told by a doctor who didn't quite phrase it like that.

Dan - I hope someone can get to the bottom of your tranny issue. Is your car still under the powertrain warranty? Sometimes when you have an intermittent problem like that you wish the damn thing would just go completely out and then they'd be forced to get to the bottom of it. Is your's a Santa Fe or another model?

Norm oddly enough in Park Forest we had a huge Marshall Field's. When my grandmother would come to visit she wanted to go there to shop so she could parade around home with the Marshall Field's shopping bag. Besides the Frango's I remember a chocolate cookie that I loved. Have no idea what it was called, or how it was made. I just called it the Marshall Field cookie. Once my grandma took my sister and I downtown Chicago to meet my cousin, and we ate at the Walnut Room. It was Christmas time and the 5 story tree was all in its glory. The bronze blocks that say Marshall Field's are still on the downtown store. Macy's wanted to take them off but the city wouldn't let them.

Chris is there any footage? Seriously, my nemesis is an open cupboard door. I was going to tell you before, maybe I did, my brother lives in Wood River, IL, which is right across the river from you. I usually say he lives in the St. Louis area. He works for some company that does floors, tile, that sort of thing, and he has more side work than he knows what to do with. His wife has been trying to get me to visit for years. One of these days... We fly into Lambert Field I don't know what my problem is.

Add Chevrolet to the list of cars that try to get a turbo 4 cylinder to do the work of (at least) a 6. And of course in addition they have that inane autostop. My only hope is that my Mom's car detonates itself before the warranty is over. That's what, about two hundred cycles a day, the turbo spins down/spins up with no oil pressure when it's hot? The starter cranks that many times as well? I've learned how to fake it out and not do the autostop, but I only drive it once a month. Doesn't some version of the Silverado have a turbo 4 as well? Sacrilege.

Mike - Sorry, no Three Stooges footage of me knocking myself silly! I live about 25-miles south of St. Louis, but I've rode my motorcycle through Wood River several times on my way to the scenic Great Illinois River Road that goes north along the Mississippi River and then the Illinois River. If you ever do decide to visit please give me a heads up and we'll make plans to get together, I'd enjoy meeting you in person!

Duh, I don't know why I didn't think of a styptic pencil or powder? I think I may have been a bit loopy for awhile after it happened. I haven't owned s styptic pencil for years. However, a few months ago my wife was trimming the dog's nails and got the quick, and we had a bloody mess on our hands. After that fiasco we ordered styptic powder online, and now we have a plastic bottle cap full on reserve every time we're clipping the dog's nails. The styptic powder never even crossed my mind, what little I had left at the time. As far as how styptic feels on a cut, I distinctly remember the feeling when I'd use it when I'd cut myself shaving. I can tell you, in my opinion, it doesn't sting as much as Super Glue.

Norm - Thanks for the tip! I'll have to find some of those to keep on hand. They sure sound.better than regular bandaids.

I can attest to the fact that super glue stings like crazy (glue). Ha!

Seriously, cyanoacrylate stings as badly as that monkey-blood merthiolate and mercurochrome stuff grandma put on me back in the day.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.

I went out on a service call Christmas day that broke my heart. Without going into details I'll just say that an elderly parent dealing with a mentally ill adult child can be heartbreaking.

Remember to count your blessings, and lets all look forward to driving many happy miles in 2021.

What do you do CW? I used to work as a gas service man for the local utility and went on many service calls to customer homes. I also remember many sad situations, Fortunately the company had a program that basically helped people in need. I think it first started out with helping people with their utility bills when they were in danger of being turned off for non pay but then it branched out to general help for people who needed other types of assistance.

I am an HVAC service tech. It was a no heat call and the daughter was hostile and semi coherent, living in a hoarder house. The mom was the property owner and we weren't allowed in to make repairs. Sad.

Thermometer was in the teens. The heat had been out for two days, and the mother thought her daughter would be gone for Christmas so that's why she chose that specific day. The daughter was home, and things went south fast.

Good morning guys,
Overcast and 38 right now, not supposed to get above 40, but at least no precip in the forecast. No big plans for today.

CW - Being in a public service position like you are, I'm sure it is heartbreaking to walk into and see situations like that firsthand. My younger brother was a Michigan State Trooper for 7-years in southwestern Michigan before transferring into the Law Enforcement (game wardens) division of the DNR. He always told me the worst calls he had to investigate were the reports of child abuse/neglect. So sad!

James - Your French Toast looks and sounds amazing. Is there any egg mixed in with the melted vanilla ice cream? Are you using the thicker Texas Toast style bread? I'm going to need to try it.

Norm - I agree with you, with no apparent motive yet for the bombing, the whole thing just seems weird, or like you said "fishy". It's still early, and look how much info they've found out already. In the end, like in so many cases of extreme violence, you can never explain "crazy"! Good luck with the rest of the roof repairs.

Hi everyone.

Busy day at work. Number was 100 and more than half the crew was gone. Our lead was gone and the bad lead was there, and he tried to make it sound like 20 people called in sick. Nope. He let a bunch of his people off, thinking he'd get people from our side to do their work, but our lead let off a bunch of people as well. Got a bit of an attitude from my wall guy. He's a young guy but we're buddies and he's awesome at his job. But the others doing his job are slack-asses and he got mad and sandbagged all day. He said why should he bust his *** and carry them when they just sit around. I said how about this. There were three people signing wheels today and I signed half of them.

Norm from what I can remember that cookie was about 4 inches round, dense chocolate cake-type middle and thin hard chocolate frosting. Not really frosting, more like a coating. I may have to research this. Haven't opened my box of Frango's yet, because I know when I do they will be gone in a day.

So CW, did the woman get her heat turned on or you just couldn't help them? That is heartbreaking. Speaking of Toronado's, when I was a kid the people around the corner from us had a 66 or 67. This was early 70s so bias ply tires were still prevalent. Or maybe their TFDs hadn't worn out yet. But in the winder they would put those knobby snow tires on the front. I could never figure that one out. My Dad said it was front wheel drive. I thought he made that up. He also said our next door neighbor's Corvair had the engine in the back. I figured my Dad was crazy a lot of the time.

Ah Kenneth merthiolate. My Mom used to paint that stuff on me. I'd skin something and come in the house wailing, and when she reached for that stuff I was instantly better.

Think I'll hit the sack early tonight. I didn't sleep very well last night. Tomorrow promises to be another hectic day at work. Eh, short week.

Have a good evening everyone.

I couldn't do a thing for her. She even refused to let me look at the thermostat.
