My 2003 F-250 6.0L diesel would not start after my round of golf this morning. Had it towed to my service garage which is basically next door. It's been acting up w/ some regularity the past month. I generally perform all my own work on all of my vehicles but I just don't feel like contending w/ it this time. I think it's probably the HPOP sensor (hopefully) - there are a set of O-Rings which I believe can fail. I hope it isn't the HPOP itself - argh. If it is, it is what it is. Sooner or later the HPOP is going to need to be worked on as I can visualize oil exuding from the base HPOP gasket housing. I didn't do an EGR delete which many talk about one of the things you should do w/ this 6.0L. I've changed out the EGR valve several times and it's always been fine after R&R of the EGR valve. We'll see what the boys at the shop find.

I probably shouldn't admit this on an open forum, but here goes. I am an HVAC service tech. Setting your thermostat fan setting to the ON position will allow you to circulate air through your house. If you have an open intake in the basement you can pull cool air thru your house. I do it. Please make sure to keep a clean filter in your system. They should be changed every month, even though some of them say they are good for three months. The truth is they aren't. A new filter on the first of the month is key.

Mike, I love this idea. Why not run w/ it? Cut the roof off, drill a bunch of holes in the floor pan & wear a rain suit when it rains. Just don't be a Freeway Creep.

Dan, I actually did that, took the lower compartment cover off and put a piece of cardboard in front of the filter. Then left the door open to the basement and turned the fan switch from auto to on. It does draw cool air right off the basement floor and sends it up the duct work. The return air is blocked so it should come back down the stairs thru the open door. It does work sort of. It doesn't get up to the 2nd floor much and it is high humidity cool air- not cool dry air like a a/c system. But it does help some. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi everyone.

This week went kinda fast I thought. We were supposed to do 100 wheels today but we supposedly did 70. At 1030 we only had 44 and at 1130 everyone stopped working and the lead came to address us and we went home. So I don't know how many we did, I was late to the party. Another guy was there to sign wheels, so there will be three of us next week and we are going to start doing 100.

Hot out today and a little cloudy. Was gonna take the dash apart on the Aura because my lunchbox flung off the seat one time and hit the glove box door and smashed the whole deal. But I went out there with the broken pieces and I think if I get some JB Weld-type stuff I can get it all back together without taking half the car apart. Tiger and I set out to the auto parts store to get said glue and also a hood strut for that car, and the first store I went to the guy didn't know what a hood strut was, but knew what a cylinder to hold the hood up was. And of course they didn't have the one I needed. So I said the heck with it and we went to Awful house.

Otto and Norm, I think I will build this exact vehicle.

So, I get to stay up late tonight, and sleep in tomorrow. No firm plans for the weekend, just whatever comes our way. Have a good evening everyone.

Hey Mike I can not wait to see the car you build for the " Summer Roofless Cruiser". When I read about the parts guy that did not know **** from shynolea it reminds me of me when I first started out in the electrical wholesale counter guy shortly after the electrical wholesale truck driver guy... see where I'm going.

I had one customer, a salty ole wise electrician explain to me what the part he was looking for is used for and why it works, I will never be able to repay him for the time he took with me to coach me up. Maybe now a days if you try to coach up a young feller he will say move along pops, but maybe the right young feller will remember the guy who took the time to pass on the craft of knowing what parts are and why they work and the correct terminology to use so you at least you sound like you know what your talking about. Mentoring Positives.

Mike - Did you strut into Awful House? I couldn't resist.
Tethering hotspot working OK?
Do you own a plasma cutter to remove the roof or you going to use a reciprocating SawzAll?
Are there criteria which must be met to determine which vehicle will be chosen as the sacrificial lamb?

Norm I got the tethering to work but turned it off. Might as well use the jetpack until it's used up for the month, I mean I am paying for it. A lot.

I didn't know your pickup was a 6 liter. Haven't heard much good about those motors. There was a diesel truck selling place I used to look at had come up with a way to put a Cummins(like the Dodge) in place of the 6 liter. Can't imagine how much that would cost.

Otto I gave up trying to educate the parts store people. Most of the stuff I'm looking for is older than they are, and when I ask for it I get a blank stare. Other times they are far superior in knowledge and anything I say is met with disdain and impatience.

We just had a huge thunderstorm come through with lightning and a downpour. Now it's gone. Tiger wanted to go out right at the heaviest part, until he stuck his nose out then came back in and went to sleep on the couch.

Jamesbo you used to own a warehouse. I want to buy a warehouse, how do I search for one? The only thing I can ever find is loopnet.com and the properties are all over a million.

A guy at work was talking about his Vega that his grandmother gave him in 1973. I told him I had heard that those cars were shipped from the factory in Ohio on their noses in a special rail car. I had never seen this so the all knowing internet showed me this.

Mike - The Navistar (a subdivision of International) VT365 (I believe it's actually called) or Ford 6.0 is actually a very good engine (for a light-moderate duty PU) - contrary to consumer popular belief. The Ford PowerStroke 6.0 was a $5K option when I purchased the truck new in 2003. This was the first model year of the 6.0L engine; and, as you rightfully suggested, it was the death of Ford warranties - resulting in the largest class-action lawsuit against Ford in history I believe. The engine was produced between 2003 and 2007. I did a significant amount of research on the engine (since I owned one) and then I followed the class action lawsuit, and by the time the lawsuit was settled I did not qualify for any reimbursements since I had already exceeded 130K miles with no warranty work to the selected engine systems. At any rate, I performed several modifications to the engine (I did not bullet-proof the engine i.e. EGR delete, upgrade the oil rails, change out the head bolts, upgrade the oil cooler) to help extend serviceability of the engine. Noteworthy is the fact Navistar was NOT declared liable in any manner in the Ford class-action lawsuit and Navistar was never held liable for any portion of the Ford lawsuit. During my research I had read where it was actually Ford engineers who re-designed and mandated Navistar meet Ford's specifications on several engine changes which departed from the Navistar VT365 engineering design. The rest I believe you can read between the lines. Albeit, Ford was liable, not Navistar. It is what it is - knowledge of knowing what you own provides guidance on maintaining what you own. Enough said on this subject.

I'm surprised you never saw any of the trains moving through the train yards and along the train rails around Chicago with the Vegas. Perhaps you were just a tad too young. I would see them with great frequency as they were shipped on the rail cars (as you noted and your image validates) - nose down. From Ohio one of the main destinations through the Chicago area was to the offload railway shipping yards in Janesville, WI where they would be loaded onto tractor-trailer automobile transport carriers for shipment to dealers throughout IA, WI, MI & IL. It was quite a site when we first started seeing the Vegas shipped in this manner. Everyone thought how bizarre. I believe nearly every Vega I saw on the road had no front fenders remaining after a couple of Illinois winters. They flat out rusted through from all the salt on the roads. I don't think they had inner fender wells - at least that's what I recall us all talking about in those days.

Mike, How big a warehouse do ya want?

When I was playing golf down around Lake Oconee, my bud showed me an empty shopping center a guy had bought and filled with his cars An empty shopping center may be a better buy. There are going to be plenty of them as Big Box store fold. Sears is in the toilet and Target is following close behind. A Pre "Super Walmart" [old smaller stores ] are sitting empty

I've got a zoned ready to go shopping center site that I'd love to sell you [since it's never going to be built on]

I don't get down your way often but I'l keep an eye out for you. FWIW metal ones are a Whole lost cheaper than brick veneer

Interesting article about one of Atlanta,s Oldest landlords

Good morning everyone.

Beautiful out, not too hot but muggy. No real plans for the day, I guess I'll just veg. Back from the Awful house already.

Jamesbo a grocery store would be awesome. A small, old, closed down car dealer would be most awesome. No place like that around here, and if there were it would be $$. A department store? Two story auto shop, now that's the ticket. There was a guy in Alabama who had Chryslers, and he bought an old Chevy dealer and redid the whole place and had his cars in there. It was like a museum. The guy had a cabinetry business and had tons of money.

Norm I was 10 when that car went out of production, and also I'm a suburbanite, so never saw the verti-pacs in Chicago. The Wikipedia article I got that picture from said the car bodies were dipped in a huge tank of rust protectant, but a bubble formed under the cowl and the cowl and the fenders didn't get any coverage at all. The bean counters balked at a $2 splash shield to put inside the fenders, so instead the warranty and recall problem cost GM millions. As my grandmother would say, spend a dime to save a nickel.

I remembered a guy at the Chevy place I worked at in high school who wanted a summer cruiser. He was the office type and had no mechanical abilities to speak of. But he bought a Chevette and took it to the body shop and cut the roof off. Not a bad looking car as a topless, but since they were all hatchbacks there was this big open space behind the back seat he wanted to cover, like with a trunk lid. This was a problem he couldn't get past, and I quit working there at the beginning of summer so I never knew what became of the project.

Well okay. Friday it is. Hope everyone is ready for the weekend.

Ah yes, the nefarious Vega. I don't know if I posted this here before or on a FB forum, anyways, a friend bought a '73 Vega GT brand new back in the day, had it rustproofed, but it made no difference. After 3 years the front fenders were flapping in the wind. Engine block cracked, replaced under warranty. Block number two cracked, replaced under warranty. Block number three cracked, and they welded it. It burned oil like a fog machine. At 28,000 and still in his 3rd year of ownership, he dumped it. We always said the G.T. stood for "Got Taken."

Dan - Your description was truly the case w/ those POS cars. It's so funny - I did 100% on several occasions during my teenage years see Vegas with front fenders flapping in the wind. What a site!

Good morning everyone.

Tiger was anxious, make that impatient, to get to the Awful house this morning. Imagine my surprise when we got there and the place was empty! I went in and they said they were only doing to go orders. Some arbitrary decision the manager made. I said I didn't want anything to go so all's I got was Tiger's dog burger. No telling what's going on.

Beautiful day out. Several things to choose from to do this afternoon.

Have a good time at the aquarium Jeff.

Still no convertible. When I'm in the Aura I put all four windows down and it's not like a convertible at all.

Okay have a good afternoon everyone. Afternoon starts in 17 minutes.

When I had my Aura, I opened the sun roof, put down the drivers side windows, turned on the a/c, and off I would go. I have a buddy who hates convertibles, T-tops and sunroofs, I have no idea why. I like them.

Jamesbo I give Tiger a plain hamburger. I don't want to spoil him. Sometimes the chef puts in a couple slices of bacon or an extra burger. Tiger is a big hit at the Awful house.

I was running errands this afternoon, with the windows down, and suddenly decided I really liked the Aura. It's not that I disliked it before, I just never really thought about it. I think it's a nice looking car, it drives nice, and it moves. I thought, too bad the Aura is only a four door and not a convertible. Ding, my brain engages and I think, Pontiac G6. And, the G6 came with a manual. Wonder how many of those were made.

Been beautiful all day. Haven't really done much. This evening I'm going to work in the front yard a little. I complain all year how it gets dark so early, yet I don't take advantage of the evenings in the summer. Tonight I will do just that.

Good morning everyone.

Gee almost lunch time. Tiger was adamant that we not sleep in today, so I got up and came in and sat on the couch and fell asleep for two more hours. What's funny is so did he. Gonna be one of those days I think.

CW that car looks a little wrinkled. At less than 10 years after the last big Starfire I can't imagine those owners being happy about the name being used on an econobox.

Dan that's what I meant, I liked the Aura and the G6 is an Aura and a convertible. So I looked around and guess how many I found that were convertible and 6 speed. Yep, zero. I wonder if I could put the Aura front clip on one.

One thing we are going to do today is give Tiger a bath. He already got brushed down in preparation. He doesn't like it but does pretty good. I didn't even get dressed when I got out of the shower. Just a pair of running shorts and a scruffy Tshirt. Walking around barefoot in the grass makes me feel like a kid.

Okay gotta get things set up. Hope everyone has a good day.

Well Mike, there's a reason that your search came up dry on the 6spd G6 'vert. It wasn't available on the convertible. I did a search, and a couple of articles pointed that out.

Dan the article I read said it was available. Whether or not it was or wasn't, there aren't any. I guess the division that built Excitement didn't want you to have too much of it.

Tiger's bath went well today. He knows when I fill up the big tubs what's coming, but it always seems to catch him off guard when I put him in the first one. He was real calm and was licking the bubbles. After I got him in the second one and rinsed real good I lifted him out and he took off running like he was crazy. Then he came back and jumped back in the water. What a goof. He was biting the water and splashing around. I guess he liked it. Finally got him back out and dumped out the water and got him dried off. He's a big puff ball now.

Back to work tomorrow. I should be back at my desk, although the guy that's supposed to do the inspection thing will probably talk his way out of it and I'll have to go back. Eh, I don't care. They are better guys there than who I normally work with.

Okay bedtime. I'm beat. That's a lot of work hauling around a 90 pound dog. Have a good evening everyone.

Here's a bear swimming across my lake
I'm guessing that he got a whiff of your good cooking, and was coming to see for himself.
