Good morning everyone.
In early for overtime, we had a good showing. Taking a bit of a break, someone went to get Chick fila biscuits. We shouldn't be too much longer. Hope I can get a few things done today.
WooHoo! Got some AC in the house again. Guy was there all day yesterday and got the new unit in and working. So nice and cool in the house now. Tiger may be able to come home, although I might have a tough time getting him away from Mom, she really likes having him there. He needs to hook up the gas line and then that machine is done. Then to start on the upstairs AC. I'm glad I'm made of money.
Norm that's interesting about the tensioner. I've always heard you replace the tensioner every other belt. I was driving my blue van to work one day and got about half way there, and noticed I no longer had power steering. That's odd, then I noticed the temp gauge going to to the extreme end, got to work and there were bits of belt all over the front of the engine. Took awhile to dig them all out. I was waiting for it to blow a head gasket, which it didn't before I stopped driving it, but when I start with it again I'm sure it will. I'm not going to worry about it.
Greg are you still at the nationals? How did the convertible do on the trip? I went to the big Oldsmobile shindig in 1987. Plenty of nice cars. I'm sure some of them still look the same. That was a big time. Went to the museum, really enjoyed it.

Still at nats, haven't been going on line much, car has done great though a new vibration above 70 mph, feels like a u joint, also exhaust leak which just started before we left, has gotten worse- it's between the heads and manifolds and sounds like ****. Hey how did I switch to italics??!!
Norm, My buddy had a 05 or so f150 that broke the belt. He figured it was the Power steering pump had seized, went to a yard and got a used ps pump, towed truck to my place, replaced ps pump.( a real PIA) , then went to start truck, wouldn't even crank, took new belt back off then cranked and started, found out then that A/C compressor had seized. UGH.... Actually bought a kit that would replace A/C comp with another idler pulley as he didn't want to pay big bucks to replace/ recharge etc etc. OK for Michigan use sorta... Make sure you check it good. When I was a mechanic at a utility we thought a 1 year old chevy truck engine had seized up because it wouldn't crank. That ended up being a seized alternator!!

Greg - Excellent points. Interestingly my ALT crapped out & was replaced by a great shop (same day) in Iron Mountain, MI some years ago. My maintenance book is in the truck which is not with me. I’ll be sure to check those items during R&R of the tensioner and belt. Enjoy Nats…

Speaking of RPM, when my car had short 245-60-14s the engine would turn 3200-3400 RPM on the highway. The only issue was when it was 100+ outside and I had the AC on the coolant would creep up to 210. Slowing down to under 3000 RPM and the coolant would drop to 190.
Calculator says I'd be running 3,270-rpm's at 70-mph with the same size 14's you mentioned. Very close to the numbers you posted. What rear end do you have in your car Kenneth?

My car currently has a 1968 O-Type with 3.23 gears.
Back in high school and college, my 1970 Supreme had a variety of rearends - 2.56, 3.08, 3.23, and 3.55. I hit 120 MPH with every one of those gears.

Just curious, having tried all those ratios in your '70 Supreme, which one did you enjoy the most and why? With just a 3-speed automatic I know I wouldn't want any taller gear than the 3.55 I have, and a 3.23 or maybe even a 3.08 sounds appealing for just a cruiser car, it's not like I'm going to the track or picking street races.
The 3.55 gears were my favorite. I didn’t do extensive highway driving back then, and there were no issues with the occasional road trip.
One interesting thing is the in town mileage was the same with the 3.55s as it was with the 2.56s. I attributed that to easier takeoff and the trans shifting to high gear quicker.
What was really cool flooring it at 55 MPH got an immediate downshift to second gear then it would chirp when shifting to third at 60.

That was my first transmission rebuild. It had very good parts as I worked at a NAPA store at the time and got parts at cost. It had a TransGo shift kit and 2200 RPM torque converter. The 3.55 gears were a perfect match That rear developed issues and I replaced it with a 3.08 rear and while the car ran OK with that, it was nowhere as quick or fun as the 3.55s.

Sleeping with the AC is wonderful. Tiger is still going to be with Mom until the guy is done with everything. I have the fence down in the back yard and next week when the guy comes back Tiger would have to to back anyway. Why disrupt him unnecessarily.
I don't think 3000rpm is excessive for 70mph. My pickup is right at 3000 at 80mph with 4.10 gears(4.11? I always forget which one Chevy has) Of course it only gets 11mpg. Well, it is a big block. Now, my first Cutlass, a 350 automatic with a 2.56 rear end got 20, no matter how fast I was going. In town, on the highway, doing 80, didn't matter. Same with my Valiant. Although it wouldn't go 80.

My 16 year old son and I had a talk during breakfast,said he his girlfriend is going to come over this afternoon.I am going to meet her for the first time.Started dating 3 weeks ago.I even said good job on seeing I am a good mom.He knows I have pituritary dwarfism having the body of a 10 years old girl.We have watched I Am Shauna Rae together whom has this also.

I had 3:42's in my '71, it would run 3200-3300 rpm's @ 70 mph. 3:23's will put you at about 2800 rpm's. Chris, you might be spoiled by the overdrive in modern vehicles, which keeps revs down and fuel economy up.
I hope things go well during the meet up. Welcome to CO. I had a very brief academic exposure to GHD during Endocrinology & Genetics coursework. As you stated in your other (63 Oldsmobile) thread, I guess you'll have pads placed onto the pedals. Hope you get the '63.
Dan - I think you're right, spoiled by automatics with 4, 6, even 8 fwd gears. Since we've been talking about this topic, I paid more attention to the rpm's my F150 was turning on the highway today at 65-mph, only about 1800 rpm's with the 4-speed automatic. I honestly don't remember what rear end my truck has in it, I need to look it up.
My 2003 F250 Lariat Crew Cab Extend 8' Bed Super Duty w/ 5-speed Automatic 6.0L diesel turns 1550 RPM @ 70 mph w/ a Dana 3.73 non-limited slip. Fuel usage remains ~17.5 mpg - 18.5 mpg - 325 horsepower at 3,300 rpm, 560 pounds-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm.
Norm - Those are impressive specs!
After lowering the '71 CS convertible onto terra firma the handling/suspension is fantastic having spent time torquing the undercarriage fasteners. They towed my F250 home this morning. I finished removal of the (serpentine) belt drive tensioner - roughly a 2.5 hr job (drain radiator, remove outer fan shroud fasteners, remove radiator support fasteners, remove outer fan shroud, remove inner fan shroud [called a 'diffuser'] fasteners, remove belt drive tensioner). A productive vehicle work day. Tomorrow I'll determine if I ordered the correct belt drive tensioner after I clean up the one I took off.
Got out of work around 11. Times like that will give overtime a bad name. Stopped by the Awful house to catch up on the scuttlebutt. There wasn't any. Went to Walmart then slept all afternoon. Sheesh. Beautiful day and I didn't get anything done. Eh, I don't ever really plan to on Sunday.

I forgot to mention my tire size. I know my RPMs, speed & rear-end ratio are correct. I have big gnarly tires on the tractor. If I remember I'll look them up. I have a 4" lift & they're as large as my front wheel wells will accommodate. The turning radius on this beast is 45'.
EDIT: Actually my speed is not correct. Since installing the massive tires (10 or 12 years ago w/ the 4" lift) I calibrated my speed but didn't change any components. So, when my speedometer reads 55 mph I'm actually traveling ~ 62 mph. Too tired to perform math at the moment to determine what that equates to when the speedometer reads 70 mph.

Well, I am pooped! Helped my youngest daughter move the big stuff today to her new home near me. This is after having helped her move a ton of smaller stuff in totes and boxes all day on Friday. Today we had 3 trucks, a 20-ft. dual axle trailer, and a good sized van, and we loaded them all to the gills. Luckily, we were able to get all the big heavy stuff over there. Luckily, we had 3 pretty fit guys to help carry, and the two gals (wife and daughter) ain't no slouchs when it comes to lifting and carrying, and it wasn't as hot today as it has been all week. I should sleep well tonight, but may wake up crippled in the morning!
After leaving the dogs for over 8-hours, probably the longest we've ever left them, they were absolutely wild when we got home running and playing like maniacs. Just take a gander at the crazed look in Maggie's eyes and it says it all!

I was able to get out of bed this morning with only a few minor "aches and pains" from all the moving yesterday. I feel lucky. The temp is supposed to jump back up to near 100° again today, so we really lucked out having the mid-80's day yesterday.
No big plans today, especially with it being so hot outside. Maggie has a wellness visit at the vet on Thursday morning. There is a car show at a Moose Lodge in Union, MO on Saturday about 60-miles away that I'd like to go to if the weather cooperates. I need to think of someplace to take my wife this week that she'd enjoy, to thank her for helping move my daughter on both days.
Hoping Greg makes it home from the Nats with no major issues. Maybe we'll hear from him this evening?

Did get the 1963 Olds 98,called me yesterday and said it was mine.Now at the place Ihave my pedal extensions made and install.Happy with the purchase,in good shape and well taken care of.Also my Mac tool dealer got me today,a new Mac toolbox,was the right color and what I wanted.
