Evening everyone. Well, I made a decision today on a car. I test drove the Intrepid and it was as advertised. I spent a little more, but I think it is worth it. All the maintenance has been done to it. It had receipts for engine and transmission changes, tune up, new brakes and Goodyear tires and everything works. The inside is mint and the exterior is presentable too. One owner car.

Allan - I had the same gutter guards. The little bastards (yellow jackets) got in through the small holes in the top and made a nest in there. Everytime I tried to close to spraying anything in there they would all start coming out. Couldn't get rid of them until it got cold.

NYC and the boroughs are a little challenging to work in. You're better off in parking garages in manhattan and the bronx, for different reasons. Manhattan because poor street parking and the bronx for your car disappearing. Lol Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island are better for parking but there are bad areas to deal with.

Scot - hope the missus enjoyed the birthday party!

Mornin all.

Darrell. Lee Iacoca is smiling on your decision I'm sure. I always thought what a PITA the windshield would be to clean on those "cab forward" vehicles.

Mike that was yesterday for sure. We got a lot more than 5" by the time it was all said and done. and wet and heavy. The plows couldn't keep up and it all packed down, started to melt and then froze. The missis was stuck in traffic for more than 2 hours last night on our 12 mile commute. I took a less traveled way and it took me about 1.5 hours. What a mess. any place there was an incline people were off the road. The way I went the road was closed because a RTD bus(Public trans bus) had almost made it to the top of the hill and then slid backwards down and across the street and ended up in someones front yard. Had to wait for a city truck to come and put liquid deicer down. Thats another thing... now that noone puts sand down anymore we have these issues. deicer doesn't give you traction. but a little bit of grit could have made it much better.

Well have a day all hope it starts to melt today.

Morning Rocketeers

Balmy mawnin here. Already 45* and Spoda get a bit warmer. Need it though cause yesterday afternoon we had freezing rain. Drives and sidewalks are still skating rinks on a slope!

Clint, I know exactly what you're experiencing. Only thing up here different? The city puts down sand AFTER all the snow and ice are melted. I think they take classes in brain dead 101 to get jobs at roadways.

Mike, hope yor back holds up. I bermember mixing cement by hand. Not a lot of fun.

Locally a police officer shot in the face passed yesterday. Perp who shot him and is partner is dead. Pretty soon all the law enforcement will need to wear Kevlar helmets too. Real shame how the legal system lets criminals walk the streets. This guy was out on bail and had over 29 outstanding warrants!

Fresh koffee just finished brewing. Enjoy your day.

Saints upheaval

Mornin', friends. Scot, I must've missed some vital clue as to what the '63 Olds in the showroom(?) is about -- "Instant Classic"?

Jamesbo, I heard you couldn't help Mike w/ the CONCREKE b/c you were up in Hiawassee helping me paint.

Extra, Extra, read all about it: Huge announcement by Tom Benson, owner of the Saints -- as well as my Dad's fellow Class of '44 graduate of St. Aloysius H.S. in N.O. -- Mr. Benson cut his daughter & granddaughter and grandson from their management positions, along with their inheritance of the teams (including the N.O. [NBA] Pelicans). HUGE NEWS LOCALLY!!!

Rita Benson LeBlanc, the granddaughter, had been groomed to replace Tom since she began working with the Saints in Y2K. But Tom changed his mind and now the whole empire will fall in the lap of his "new" wife of 10 years, Gayle. I have to say, I personally love Tom, and I think it's all being done in the interest of the team, his family, his legacy, and the N.O. community.

Until I recently saw this story from 2012, however, I did not understand the latest move one iota. But things are pretty clear after seeing a bit of history.

Anyhoots, not to change the subject too radically, I was supposed to go to N.O. and eat a Chinese lunch w/ my buddy from the Ford truck dealership; but he just called to inform me he went completely blind in his right eye yesterday, and they think he sustained a detached retina. There was big-time hemorrhaging in the eye when he went to the Dr., so they could not see down to the retina. But he's going back today for the supposed verdict. What a miserable shame. We're the same age. Whelpt, yet another person to pray for. St. Lucy, let's get busy up there!

Have a great Thursday, Oldsmofriends.

Hi everyone.

What a great day for sleeping. Went to bed at 0330, expecting to get up at 7 for the dogs. They didn't come get me until almost 9. Then they left me alone until after 2 when the phone rang. They are such good dogs.

So the big turnover on the Saturn will be this week. I've been looking for something to fill the gap, not having a lot of luck. I initially thought I'd buy -anything- but then the usual paring down of what I absolutely don't want has left me with slim pickin's.

Darrell sounds like you found a nice car. Hope it isn't too nice so you have the same problem as before. How's the pup?

John are you back up there already? My next days off start Sunday so give me your best Huck Finn and I'll come up and help. Will your friend be able to have the retina reattached? Prayers for him. I bet that's painful.

Allan I'm pretty much feeling better. That was a lot of work but I'm pleased with the outcome. Since I sleep on a giant heating pad I heal up quick.

Jamesbo don't say that too loud or your neighbors with the Rolls Royce walls will want you to help them. Besides, you have a backhoe. Oh you do. I got plenty of things for a backhoe to do...

Ah time for work. Supposed to rain tonight so that won't be any good. Hope everyone has a good evening. The weekend is fastly approaching.

Scot - we got up to 50° here today!! Unbelievable for this part of the world. And the City FINALLY got round to getting the huge windrows off the main street. Now we actually have a road instead of a goat path. Forecast for the next 4 days are cooler (44°) and rain. That should clear up a lot of the snow that's left here.

The boy was at a job fair yesterday and got some good leads on some prospective employers. Some are local, some are in different cities and provinces (like states only bigger and fewer). Don't know why he still refuses to get his DL. It's gonna be a giant PITA when he applies and needs it for a job. Still a few months to go though.

Have to take the Sonata back to the body shop, AGAIN. Sheesh, this is the 5th time I've had to go back to have them fix their shoddy workmanship. Don't know how I missed it but the bumper cover on the drivers side doesn't meet the quarter panel flush. It's inset about 3/32". Anyhoo, I dropped by the shop and told them I wanted it aligned properly and they said Friday around 1:00 pm. It's spoda only take about 20 minutes...Why can't body shops just do a good job the first time so there's no hassle with these return visits. Oh, anyone who's reading this? Don't go to Tri-Star. I noticed on their web page, out of all the customers they've served over the past 20+ years there's only 6 testimonials.

Ohhh!

Scot, I guess it's been so long since I've seen it, I dun fergot most of what went on. After I watch Blazing Saddles for the 15th time (or so), I'll put that one in my queue.

Mike, me not in GA... was jes razzin' Jamesbo about his love for both concrete (a.k.a. "CONCREKE") and painting. It's like "Name your poison," eh Jamesbo? Hopin' to be back up in God's country some time in the next couple months, but not sure. As I think I've mentioned, we have the M.I.L. 90th birthday celebration in Feb., so that's a priority.

Heard from my friend this evening (thanks, Mike): after being in "the chair" at the ophthalmologist's office for 3 hours, they sent him home with his retina supposedly reattached, and a warning that he won't be able to see -- and his eye won't appear normal -- for 3 months. He's a trooper (driving himself back to work tomorrow!), but I feel sorry for him, as he had a cataract operation just a few months ago (I think he's justifiably suspicious that something they did during that procedure might have precipitated his current malady). And he got shingles last year, as well. He's getting all the geezer conditions... sure hope I can steer clear of those things, but I guess we don't have the ultimate say.

Rain hasn't slowed in hours down here. Sure glad I cleaned dem gutters! They say it's good for all night, at least. Makes for good sleeping, anyhoots...

Y'all have a great night, folks.

Morning from Northern Utah-
I have also had to throw my hat into the "looking for another beater" car.
the last one was deemed Terminal as it would cost more to fix than it was worth and sold it to the Mechanic. (we didn't like that car to much anyway) and with nearly 260K on the clock an Escort is about done anyway.

I have seen a Few Alero's .. how are they.. should I run away from them are they OK . I am looking in the late 90's early 00's for a car.
I have a very slim budget.

Never had an Alero, but if they are like the cousins the Chebby Crapalier and Poncho Sunfire, my $0.02 would be negative. But if you can get 260K out of an Escort then you had better luck than me.

Speaking of painting, it won't be long that I get to enjoy the wonders and MAWs that coincide with exterior painting and siding repair. Maybe Jamesbo has some words of wisadom fer me

Mernin', all.

Still drizzling, and appears it's good for at least the morning. It's 45* at the Plantation and we don't expect it to get any above that for a while. But I'll take it; no freezes in the forecast.

Big Easy is consumed with the Tom Benson case. It's all over every medium. The daughter, granddaughter, and grandson have sued to get back what had been put into an "irrevocable trust" for them upon Tom's demise. Whatever happens, some serious laundry is destined to air -- dirty or otherwise. The heirs are claiming that Tom's mental condition leaves a little to be desired. He might be getting a little forgetful (he'll be 88 this year); but my opinion is that he's fully and legally competent to do what he sees fit with his affairs and property. We shall see.

I pharted with my friend's iPhone and iTunes yesterday for hours, trying to figger out just how to get songs on & off the miserable thing. I still ain't got it figgeredout completely; but a couple more marathon sessions and I'll be up to speed.

IMHO, iTunes is anything but "intuitive." Gotta' use special Apple Speak to get it to do anything. (Amazon Music is fab, IMHO.) But in any case, it's pretty nice having an iPod and the (Bluetooth) iPhone 3 (which I just use as a music player) to alternate in the car; each one plays about 20 hours of music (8 gigs). The "Pod" requires a USB connection, but that's fine, since the Avalon has a little compartment in the car to hide it and leave it plugged in, to charge whenever the ignition is on. So no fotzing with anything at all until it's time to bring it back in to "reload." They know where I left off, and they start back up there the next time. And the car has buttons for jumping tracks, etc. So I'm pretty content for now, even if the sound system is not quite up to the ol' Camry's JBL. OK, 'nuffa' dat.

Let me see if I can possibly get a few "real" things done today. Y'all have a warm & dry Friday...

Anutter beautiful day shaping up in Tundra Central. If it was like this all winter we wouldn't end up moving to the coast.

Scot, the secret to painting is the same as with cars. Prep, then some skill with either a brush or paint gun.

Jim, I tot you Wuz gonna tell Scot ta have John do de paint.

Jeff, Alero is a decent car. So is the Intrigue.

Mike, so is the wall all finished?

Costco today. You know what that means campers. Enjoy your day.

Well I didn't put them all on it. I only put about 4K on it and most of it was fix this / that.. radiator, alignment, ball joints, tires, clutch master / slave, and it has lots of evap leaks causing a check engine light causing a failure for emissions.. and it was going to cost more than value to fix. I dumped it like a hot potato.

Hi everyone.

Gloomy and dreary today. Slept a lot. Maybe the dogs are finally getting it. Or, there were no critters out today to be worried about.

Allan the wall is far from finished. It will take years to be done and by that time it will need rebuilding. It really needs it now but I have not the money nor the desire to see that project through.

I have one more trip to work and the Saturn will hit the magic number. But alas, I'm leaving it home the next two days because I want to stop and take a picture, and I'm not doing that in the dark and/or the rain. So it's black pickup for the remainder. I don't mind.

Jeff I have not owned an Alero but I knew someone with one. Nice looking cars, fairly reliable I would say, but the seats are torture. At least they were to me. And maybe the owner because she didn't keep it long. Seek out Pat aka 1970CS on here he is the all time Alero guru.

Well time to hit it. Last night was miserable to be out in, we only had to put up with that the last hour. Just a slight mist here now, hope that's the way it stays or lets up.

Have a good Friday night everyone, have a good weekend.

Da' weekend is upon us

A chilly-dilly 35*in da' swamp, but rain over. Now, to get some of the water out of here. Things are generally a mess everywhere, and the South Shore got it worse than us up here. But spose to be smooth sailin' near a week. I'll take it! The poor gravel road is really takin' a lickin'. I worked on it 2-3 hours last weekend, and I think I'm due another couple hours this weekend.

Have a safe trip, Jamesbo. Sorry the project is so overwhelming, Mike. I have a couple concrete projects down here I'd like to do (I have a Harbor Freight mixer I've used a couple times); but at the rate I'm going, the mixer may never see 120V again.

Y'all have a great weekend, Oldsmofriends.

Rain is done for now but wind gusting up to 30 mph. Temps around 42 right now but warming up a bit more later. That and the wind should melt even more snow.

Jim, wisht I Wuz goin to de mountains too. No such luck doh.

John, good luck with the road. Saw a neat invetion that cleans gutters. Sort of like a mini robot track vehicle that fits perfect into the gutter. Turn on and let it rip. Don't know how it turns corners though.

Mike, hopefully the sea wall gets done soon and your worries are over. BTW our low Saturn only has around 95k on it. Is yours AT or SMT? The AT on ours is making some whiny noise but still shifts ok. Fluid level is good too. Maybe it just needs changing.

Enjoy your day

This ones for you Jamesbo: Four old-timers were playing their weekly game of golf when one one of them commented on how nice it would be to wake up on Christmas morning, roll out of bed - and without an argument, go directly to the golf course to meet his buddies for 18 holes. All three of his friends unanimously agree, "Let's do it! We'll make it a priority, figure out a way and meet here early Christmas morning!"

A few weeks later it's Christmas morning - and there all are standing next to each other on the first tee box. One friend exclaims "Boy this game cost me a fortune! I had to buy my wife such a huge diamond ring, she can't even take her eyes off it." Another friend says, "I spent a ton, too. My wife is at home planning the cruise I gave her. She was up to her eyeballs in brochures." The third friend replies "Well, my wife is at home admiring her new car" reading the manual." Silence from the fourth guy"

The other three friends in the group look puzzled, while the final guy in the foursome is staring at them like they must have lost their minds. "I can't believe you all went to such and expense for a round of golf. I just woke up, slapped her on the butt and said, "Well babe, Merry Christmas! Golf or sex, what's it gonna be" and she said "Take a sweater."

Hi everyone.

Running late. Got all ready for work and my neighbor called and said she had some rice for me. So I go over there real quick, she says here there's plenty, and fixed me a big bowl(in addition to what I brought home) and a pork chop, and I was there for almost a half hour. Now I gotta split.

Friday tonight. Black truck again. I like driving that guy. Seems weird to come home from work and see the Saturn already there.

Okay have a good evening everyone.

Good morning everyone.

Long night last night, but I worked on something I never had before. Another guy and I replaced the Flap Control Module on an MD90. Took the broken one off, took a good one from another plane that is in the hangar, put the good one on our plane. Not a bad job, just one that goes slow.

Allan how could she not be sweet on me? Actually I would describe my neighbors as two people I cannot live without. Could I really? Of course. But I wouldn't want to.

The Saturn is automatic. Some time years ago my friend had something inside the transmission replaced, I don't know what, but the car has never shifted right since I've had it. Downshifts great when I'm slowing down, just acts funny shifting up. That will all be taken care of soon.

John I don't mind when a project is overwhelming. Everything I have is a project.

Well sleep for a little while today, then get something done when it warms up. See ya's all a little later.

Good Sunday Mawnin

Chilly in the mid 30's here, but supposed to warm up to a nice 62*

Mike thank you for the note pad. I needed something like that for my computer desk as I was always jotting stuff down on old envelopes. Especially when researching to decode cowl tags and other parts.

Whelp the better half's B-D party was a success. Actually we avoided the hubbub of everyone coming here this time. Yea! Word to the wise... Never buy white carpets It's too stressful for a wife with OCD

Have a great day Oldsmofriends

Morning Rocketeers

Cooler and breezy this mawnin. Purty quiet too, I like that.

Jim, some day. Raincoat? Heck ya might as well jes head out to de swimming pool.

Mike, Saturn adjusted the transmission when it was only 3 years old and it's never been the same since. I think the oil leak is the pressure sender seal.

Scot, good to hear everything worked out. White carpet? You kidding me? Not in my lifetime.

Jeff, you find any beaters worth buying yet?

Tomorrow gotta go to de leach letter an let dem suck some blood. Just great, it's Spoda rain tomorrow mawnin.

Time fer koffee. Enjoy your day.

Hi everyone.

Got up at a decent time this afternoon and put on my big boots and went out in the lake again. I don't know why it amuses me to walk on the lake floor 30 feet out from my wall. Actually what I was doing was picking up trash that people throw into the lake from their boats. Found out what was causing the soft spot in my dock, so now I can get materials and do the repair.

Scot you're welcome. That was the annual gift for the Amphicar club. It took a surprising amount of time to get that all together for 250 people.

Allan that could be your problem in a nutshell. If your local Saturn place didn't have a good shop it doesn't matter how good a car is it will not be reliable after they are done with it. I know you are pretty much done with the car now, but if you need trans work seek out a competent independent trans shop. There is one close to me that's done a lot of work for me. They are absolutely wizards with an automatic trans.

Rain again tomorrow Jamesbo? I hadn't heard. I thought it was going to be nice for awhile. This is beyond irritating.

Hm, wonder what I can do tonight. Have a good one all.

Well if you scoot right over I'll be leaving for curling in about 15 minutes. We can chat on the way and if you're feeling lucky you can try your hand out on the ice.

Wahl I dint see ya Mike so I guess ya got caught in traffic on the interstate. I checked the transmission fluid when I got back. It's up, and 'looks' sort of pink but I think it's burned and needs changing. Last time it was done was at 50K kilometers and now the car has 157K kilometers. Shouldn't be a terrible job to do with that spin off filter and the trans drain plug.

Good morning everyone.

Rain started up last night before bed. Got my last armful of firewood wet so the stove didn't go through the night. Well, I had it up to 77 in here. Very comfy. Don't know yet what the weather will do today.

So yesterday I was out in the lake picking up trash. Now, there's a low spot in my wall where the dogs can jump down and if they get into the lake they can run anywhere, so I've been careful to go way down to the dock and jump down so they wouldn't see the easy way. Well, I walked way down to the dock, then walked back past the low spot and when I turned around here's my boy running around on the lake bed. So much for that. Wonder if I could get some of that orange snow fence and put up to the water's edge until the lake comes back up.

Sorry Allan, my Zamboni fell through the ice the last time we had a cold snap. If you think your trans fluid is burned I sure wouldn't change it. Top it off sure, but change it, nope. I've been changing the filter every 10K. I wish more cars had a spin off filter like that.

Oh Darrell. Two feet of snow. My God.

So after Awful house today I need to run to the Post Office, then to the courthouse. I've been trying to get the official plat of my property so I can have a survey done. I want to put up a fence but need to make sure I get the property line correct on the one side. When the courthouse was being redone the plat books went to the Georgia Archives at Clayton State College, and when the work was done the Archives wouldn't give the books back. I've heard they are back now so I need to go make sure.

Well happy Monday to everyone. Have a good day. Last week of January and holy heck it just started it seems.
