Hi everyone.

Good trip home yesterday. Everything seemed to be undisturbed from the weekend and Halloween, so I was happy about that. Good start to the work week today, and I'm happy about that.

It's cold as a mother in the house. Guess I gotta call the gas co. so I can get some heat in the house. It was really cold last night and today Tiger was cold all day. His ears are like ice. We can't have that.

Been thinking about wireless cameras to put up around the house. Never had a problem, but one never knows. Thought I might get a trail cam to hide at the shop. Don't know much about them. Hm, all this surveillance.

Okay going to talk on the phone for a little while. Happy Monday to all.

Bravo! I watched that twice.

Hi everyone.

The day drug on today, we finished up after 2. But hey guess what, Tuesday is now done with, work wise, and we succeeded.

Jamesbo I've worn pretty much the same thing my whole life. Jeans and a Tshirt. I might be a little old for the scruffy teen ager look, but heck it doesn't bother me.

Greg I thought your old Ford was a restomod with shiny paint and a small block. Lets see some pictures.

I might mow a little this afternoon. It's beautiful out. Supposed to get a few degrees warmer today and tomorrow and then start cooling off quite a bit. No rain though.

Okay have a good afternoon.

Greg- I had a ‘53 GMC truck I partially restored before selling it prior to leaving the USAF in CA in the early 70s. I drive it everywhere as a daily driver while performing the bodywork. It had those cool curved opera windows on the sides. It was a fun truck.

Jamesbo you're up before the chickens, like me. Now, if I could go to the dentist at 4am, I might just go to the dentist.

Greg love the truck. Looks really nice. Don't hurry painting it.

Like every morning, things are slow to get going. Eh, easy money.

Have a good day everyone see you's all later.

I determined w/ a mirror the rearward circular plastic edge on the #8 FI receptacle was bent inwards not allowing me to insert the FI wire loom plug onto the top of the #8 FI. After some canoodling w/ a pair of hemostats, I was able to bend the edge back into place to secure the wire loom plug onto the FI. I must have bent the edge during removal of the wire loom plug. After reinstalling the labyrinth of parts required to gain access to the ICP sensor & IPR valve, & cycling the engine a half dozen times before start-up, I was delighted to find the misfire has abated. Believe me when I say that is a tremendous relief. Unfortunately, my oil gauge is now rising and slowly pegging to the top in the "H" range. I suspect I either (1) spilled a bunch of antifreeze on the oil pressure sensor and it needs replaced; or, (2) I bent it or the wires leading to it. So, that needs to be addressed in the next couple days as soon as I determine it's location.

I'm installing new spark plug wires and a new battery in the Indian motorcycle next.

Tee time 8:30am.

Mike - The trail cam & remote WiFi cameras sound kind of cool.

James - I'd rather have the tooth pulled and an implant than a trip to the endodontist. Hope it goes well - but, honestly - there's nothing good about a root canal (except perhaps the drugs).

Norm. sounds like you got it, It sure is a elation when you get it-isn't it?? Of course that's after the deflation/depression of the feeling of realizing you have to do it. I talked a friend of mine into adjusting the valves on his quad because it ran so loud. We looked up on the internet how to do it. So he removed all the plastic cladding and the fuel tank, etc. In the process of doing that he broke the special fuel line gismo trying to get the rubber hose off. I came over and we adjusted the valves which were ok and didn't need adjusting! So then we hooked up a temporary fuel line put into a baby jar w/gas, ran it and found a lot of piston slap/wrist pin??? noise. Ok not going to mess with that. He repaired the broken fuel line gismo with a bulkhead fitting cuz new one was going to be $120, and put back together. Quad ran for about 30 seconds and quit- no gas. He then took fuel pump off and broke 2 screws! He took pump apart and put it back together after replacing screws. No gas pumping! He really isn't a car/mechanical guy and he was frustrated big time!! So we went back to the net and watched a few you tube videos about the fuel pump. One of them has a identical quad as his sitting there running/ banging away just as loud as his!! Anyway he ordered a new pump and it now runs and is back together... WOW what a bunch of typing to tell that story!! Anyway my point was about how frustrated he got and how everything escalated into a no run situation, and it all was initiated by me! With no gain at all in the end. If I had never said anything about it being loud he never would have messed with it. Not really a comparison with your truck because you fixed the problem... Ok enough hut and pecking- have a good one all....

Mike, I had to be in Buckhead by 8:00 so rather than sit for hours on the Alpharetta autobahn.[Ga 400] I went early to beat the traffic and went to your favorite establishment [waffle House] and did the crossword puzzle while dined on sum scattered, covered and smothered [hash browns]

In and out in 45 mins. A walk in the park [so far]

Greg - Good story. Yes, I was elated to find I had resolved the misfire issue. Not quite sure about the oil pressure sensor but it should be a walk in the park.
James - Glad the root canal was a walk in the park. Hash browns sound delicious. $1600 for a rejected key - ouch
Dan - I just got a picture from cousins in Oshkosh, WI showing ~4" - 6" of the fluffy white stuff.
Mike - Is today a free lunch day @ work?

Hi everyone.

No free lunch today, and get this. Usually after lunch I get a couple hours to screw off because I switch with the annoying guy. So I go walking around the hangar, go to the credit union, whatever. Well today I find out the annoying guy is getting a different job in the department and I'll have to work all day. What's up with that? On the one hand, I'm rid of that joker. On the other hand, I won't have any time to myself while I'm at work. Sheesh.

Jamesbo glad the root canal went well. It doesn't sound like something that would. I need to draw on your vast Real Estate knowledge. How do I go about buying an industrial-type building, and paying for it, but using it for personal stuff? My credit union won't loan money on something like that. Do people selling industrial buildings even talk to private people?

Well the OT ends. Start time tomorrow is 6am, so we get to sleep in! I might stay up until 8pm, holy cow.

Have a good evening everyone.

The forecast called for 1"-2" of snow, got about 5" at last check. Debating going to the high school football playoff game on Saturday. We are 10-0 at this point. Only supposed to be about 36° for the high temp. I may have to buy a hunters seat cushion to keep my butt warm if I do.

Record snowfall for yesterday: 6.2". Kinda early for this ****. I hope that this isn't a portend of winter that may be coming. The good thing was that the concrete driveway still held some heat in it, and therefore it didn't accumulate there, I.E. I didn't have to get the snowblower out.

Hi everyone.

I'm twitching just thinking about 6 inches of snow. When I lived up home I wanted to hibernate all winter so I wouldn't have to deal with any of it. That didn't work out so well.

Thanks Jamesbo. I don't have anything in mind yet, I'm looking. Years ago I could have bought a 22000ft warehouse for 100K. It had 5 buildings, an office, sat on 2.7 acres. It was also an hour from my house and over an hour to work. I still mourn that one.

Work was slow as hell today. We went from not being able to keep up to no wheels at all. I don't think we did a hundred wheels today. Tomorrow is supposed to be more of the same. It's also Veteran's Celebration day tomorrow at work, so we should have plenty of time to take it all in. People bring their awards and pictures and what have you and set it up for display, there are several planes that are on display inside the hangar, a C17 and a C130 are already there. Last year there were two V22 Osprey's there and a C47. Probably a couple Jeeps and a guy usually brings his Deuce.

Gas man is coming today, woohoo. Heat in the house tonight. We haven't done too badly. If Tiger weren't here I wouldn't have called them at all. While I'm waiting on him I'm going to pull the seats out of the Corvair and the carpeting. Need to find out where a leak is.

Okay rain later on, Friday tomorrow, the weekend is looking good. Hope everyone has a good afternoon.

Bobby you're fine. Col. Wickham was a beloved contributor to this thread and died suddenly several years ago. He loved his 71 that's for sure. Oh and welcome. Let's see some pictures.

Norm mosquitos this late?

Gas man just left. No drama, just turned the valve and left. He was on overtime and I was his last call, and he wanted to get home. Can't say that I blame him. No more frosts on Tiger's nose.

James - No land breeze - had there been, I'll bet I could have smelled the corn beef cooking. The fact is, it was absolutely dead still between 4:00PM & 5:00PM - zero wind and very quite. You could hear a mouse fart a mile away.
Mike - It was 74*F today. All age groups were sucking blood today - itsy bitsy tiny little flying drill bits all the way up to the 747-400 types. The mosquitoes were relentless.
Mike - The Blackbird (SR71) fell under my responsibilities when it was in for major/minor isochronal inspection @ Norton AFB back in the 1970s. I did not perform the inspections - I was responsible for primary, secondary & tertiary flight control systems only during the time from when it landed until it's departure (another group performed the inspections). With that said, it was awesome to watch them prepare for departure (which took about 2-3 hours). Wherever that bird goes, one or tow other aircraft carry two Buick Wildcat (425 cid) engines. The Wildcat engines serve two functions: (1) to start the Blackbird engines & (2) to warm up the oil prior to engine start and/or reduce the viscosity of the oil so it will pour into the engine oil reservoir to top off the oil. That oil is pretty viscous - it's a solid mass @32*F.

The SR71 is one cool aircraft, one of my favorites. Mike, I believe that you got your heat on just in time, as I saw on the national forecast that you guys are supposed to get some 30° weather pretty soon. Are you going to take your deuce to work?

Hi everyone.

The day drug on and on. No one was motivated, and we didn't have very many wheels. Finally around 130 we just stopped working and went home. Big Veteran's Day shindig going on in the hangar. Several airplanes, including a C130, C17, B17, Chinook helicopter, Mustang, some fighter jets I don't know what they are, and the Snowman semi was there with Sheriff Buford's car and the Trans Am. Also a VW Beetle painted up like the Trans Am. A little hokey but neat. No SR71s.

Norm that's pretty cool. Why did you only work on the flight controls? Was the plane such a handful that each system needed its own team? How long does it take for the hot oil to solidify?

The president is in town today along with the VP. They were doing something downtown and thankfully landed their planes at Dobbins AFB, which is north of the city. I'm south so I wasn't affected by all the road closures and backed up traffic.

Supposed to go see a truck tomorrow in Gainesville, but I can't find anyone to go with me. Can't drive two vehicles at the same time. Having no friends is usually fine by me, until I need some help with something.

Okay Happy Friday.

The manner in which the military (at least USAF) operates is to separate various aspects of an aircraft into specialized sections - hydraulics, engines, sheet metal, avionics, electronics, electrical, flight control systems, tires & wheels, weapons, etc. I was in an interesting position as I worked on any aircraft with two or fewer jet engines. Norton AFB was primarily a C-141 Starlifter (MAC - Military Airlift Command) base involved in troop and cargo transport. The base routinely had C-5A missions and less frequent SR-71 missions. The reason I was there was because Norton AFB was also headquarters to IG (Inspector General) OSI (Office of Special Investigation). The IG's flew around in these North American Aviation T-39 Sabreliner aircraft (two engines). I was one member of a specialized team of six who were specialists on primary, secondary & tertiary flight controls of the T-39; however, any other aircraft with two or less jet engines which occupied space @ Norton AFB for any length of time, fell under our responsibilities i.e. F-4, F-104, F-105, F-111, F-117, F-15, F-16, etc. Therefore, any aircraft with two jet engines or less would be assigned to our team. If the mission (aircraft) involved primary, secondary or tertiary diagnostics/troubleshooting R&R it fell under the umbrella of our team. If the aircraft required other maintenance items, our team would assign the work to other specialized teams (avionics, electronics, etc.).

Since the SR-71 aircraft fell w/in the designation of two or less jet engines, it was assigned to our team. We also maintained an inventory of all the Technical Manuals for all military aircraft in the Norton AFB technical library - every single aircraft manufacturer's technical manuals. We spent (for obvious reasons) an inordinate amount of time reading through technical manuals.

Norton AFB had some of the largest hangars in the USAF - capable of housing the largest aircraft in the military; and, we had an assload of enormous hangars - much like you'd see at any huge airport which was base to Delta, AA, JetBlue, Luftansa, etc.

I really don't know how long it would take for the engine oil to solidify. I do recall the Wildcat 425's when I first saw them and each time thereafter. Immediately after landing, all the oil is drained from the SR-71 and sent for SOAP analysis (this occurred after every single mission not just by the engine hours). So, they had to fill the engines with new fresh oil every single time after they shut-down the engines. They had like these special metal corsets they'd wrap around these metal oil drums (which were solid masses of oil in the drums), fire up the Wildcats heat up the oil, fill the oil reservoirs, then they would use the Wildcats as they do any normal APU to ram air start the behemoth Pratt & Whitney J58's. I believe the C-141 aircraft were retrofitted w/ the Pratt & Whitney J57 engines sometime in the early 1970's as I recall.

Good morning everyone.

Just got back from the Awful house. Man, I haven't been there in weeks. It's still the same. Tiger had been in jail since the last time we went, and the two places are next to each other, so when we turned on the main drag, Tiger started whining, thinking we were going to the vet. Nope, bypassed that and went for a dog burger.

Doesn't look like Gainesville is going to happen today. Can't find anyone to go with me. I screwed up at Uhaul yesterday, my plan was to drag an empty tow dolly with the dogmobile up there, buy the truck and then tow the dogmobile home with the new truck. But when I went to Uhaul, I realized I couldn't say I'd tow with a truck and then pick up the dolly with the dogmobile, so I said I would tow the truck with another truck. Oh no, she said, the website said that won't work. At that point she shut down and wouldn't listen to any other ideas(schemes). I was out of luck. So I guess I'll call the guy and tell him I'll come another time. I hate to do that.

Norm I looked up those Buicks on YouTube, it said that in the 70s when they couldn't get Buick V8s anymore they changed them to 454s. In Atlanta Delta has one big hangar and a couple smaller ones. We do most of our maintenance outside. When I fly into Melbourne(AU) airport there are huge hangars as far as you can see. The planes are towed off the gate to the hangar to get worked on. Apparently it's against the law to work on an airplane outside in Australia.

Well, we'll see what I can get into today. Have a good weekend everyone.
