I replaced/rebuilt ~1/3 of the front porch deck ~15 yrs. ago. Those boards have held up fine. The remaining 2/3 require new wood. Original boards are 3/4" #2 grade or lesser quality. I suspect/believe the original porch was built same year as the house (1930) - 95 yrs. It's due for a complete rebuild. Kiln dried planks = $9.22/board (10'L); Pressure treated planks = $6.49/board (10'L). Porch width = 201". Each board is 5.5"W. Therefore, 201"/5.5" = 36.6 (10') boards - call it 37 boards. Kiln dried = $9.22 x 37 = $341.14; Pressure treated = $6.49 x 37 = $240.13

Total square footage = 8'7"L (103") x 16'9"W (201") = ~153 sq ft. Each board length must be 8'7"L; albeit, 10'L boards.

$341.14 (Kiln) - $240.13 (PT) = $101.01 difference between Kiln & PT.

Since I won't need a table saw, I think I'll splurge on the Kiln dried boards. I'll likely stain/seal the deck w/ Cabot Australian Timber Oil (Amberwood). It's really a nice stain/sealer.

Norm - Thanks for taking the time to refresh my memory! I'd certainly pay the extra for the kiln dried also, I think they're a smart choice. 👍

Norm - Thanks for asking. The crackers and banana I had at dinnertime stayed down. My stomach felt a little unsettled, but then calmed down. About an hour ago I had icecream again, but not alot. I feel fine so far after the icecream. I'm hoping I'm getting past the worst of whatever it was. Keeping my fingers crossed at this point!

When you violently blow chow several (repeated) times you eliminate a mucosal lining of cells (in your gut) responsible for producing the enzyme lactase. The enzyme lactase catalyzes breakdown of lactose (found in dairy products). Takes some time to replenish gut lactase. You’ll likely feel bloated, queasy, irritated stomach until lactase is replenished.

Is there anything, like a probiotic, or something else, I could take that would help speed up that process, or does it just have to take care of itself over time?

You can get some phenomenal gas out of it, if you want to try to set volume and duration records.

Don't know that I want that side effect either, but if it counteracts/eliminates the extreme belly pain associated with the excess gas, I'd take it. The belly aches preceding the bouts of nausea and vomiting have been excruciating. Good news is I had no major events after eating solid food (but not alot) for dinner last night. No stomach ache, and no nausea and vomiting. Really hoping I have turned a corner.

When you’re lactose intolerant such as your case with no lactase because you eliminated it from your gut (small intestine), bacteria which reside in your large intestine have a complete field day with the lactose now available to them so they gobble down that lactose (because they can) to create the aching, gas & bloating.

Hi everyone.

Slow day. We started out with all big wheels, then half of us had to go upstairs to a pow wow. That lasted two hours. Then the other half was supposed to go but it was lunchtime, and then I think the manager went home, so group 2 must be going tomorrow. The company catered in mexican for everyone. I knew this ahead of time and brought PBJ.

Chris I hope you are over your malady. You now need to eat as much pizza as you can, so you don't become afraid of pizza.

I just walked past the roll up door. It's a nice day out. I'll have a whole hour to get something done after work, hope I can come up with something meaningful. The lead already told us we're working Saturday. That's good news. Eight overtime, and Awful house afterward.

See ya's.

Mike - Just curious, do you not like any kind of Mexican food, or does Mexican food not like you?

God knows I love my pizza, usually having some variety of it at least once a week. However, after my last experience, it doesn't even sound good at all right now. As Norm would say . . . Baby Steps!

I guess I'm really going to do this, right? The bum elbow remains bummed.

I moved furniture (tables/chairs) from front porch into the man-cave for the winter months. A little early, but they need to go to begin dismantling the front porch deck. Spent most of the day finishing up the 1st coat of stain/sealer on the gate. I'm hoping to get a 2nd coat applied tomorrow. Motorcycle table lift pump appears to be working OK - at least pneumatically - I'm not clear if I like this pump or not. The foot pedal is like mush - not sure what to make of it. People I know have been dying lately. The grumpy geezer next door croaked on Sunday. Service is tomorrow afternoon. Family/Friends from 1pm - 2pm - I'll make an appearance, I won't attend the funeral service.

Ate fried rice & shrimp for dinner. No foreign substances could be found. Cottage cheese + peaches in a couple minutes.

Got out of shower...ambulance + 2 squad cars. Sounded like a baby crying - a woman (likely paramedic) comforting a deer fawn laying on the pavement. Just heard a handgun get fired. No more crying.

I've noticed w/ repeated regularity for the past 1.5 weeks there has been ~3 seconds to 5 seconds delay in mouse clicks. Click on any icon, link, etc. on this site and it takes ~3 seconds - 5 seconds for any response. Sometimes it's far worse, then it no longer occurs, then it's back again. Anyone else have this experience?

Norm - I haven't noticed it. I will however pay more attention to the possibility of a pervasive problem over the next few days and will report if I notice anything.

. My buddy and I have been discussing this lately, and it sucks. People that we went to school with, or just knew from the neighborhood have passed on, some that I didn't even know had passed. We are not getting any younger. No issues with the speed of my computer on this site. Off to get a covid booster in a bit. Car show up in the bustling town of New Era on Saturday. Starts at 8am, gonna have to put the top up for the trip up, as it will be a bit cool.

Dan - Thanks. I think maybe the mouse issue is on my end. I'll noodle about - maybe driver related &/or the new Windows 11 Update - whatever.

I'm waiting to see what the exact message/guidance is w/ the current CDC B.S. on Covid guidance. Currently I think you need a prescription is what I've read. I have an app't w/ my primary M.D. next week (Friday) if they haven't reached a decision by then I'll ask him to write me a script for a booster. My gawd I think I've had seven since the pandemic began...hell, I'm on a roll, don't stop now.

I'd think it will be a bit cool for the top down. Although, I've driven in worse w/ the top down, windows up, sun visors down, layers of clothing heater full blast. Have fun.

Jim - Your advice is smart and spot on. I did not have any dairy last night, but still had a bad night and morning, with significant issues at both ends. All I've had today is 2 pieces of plain toast with half a bottle of water. Took a couple Immodium tablets this morning to try and stop the issue on the South end. Headed to my Doc tomorrow morning for my Annual Physical and hoping I can get some help from him. I've now lost 9-lbs since Sunday, not good!

Chris - You are not paying attention. Unclear to me why you'd eat ice cream (dairy product) - again.

There are four classes of macromolecules required to sustain life in living organisms: Lipids (fats), Proteins (amino acids), Nucleic Acids (DNA, RNA, etc) & Carbohydrates (sugars).

Carbohydrates = sugars.

There are basically two types of carbohydrates: Polysaccharides & Monosaccharides. The building block of all polysaccharides are the monosaccharides. Glucose is a monosaccharide. Galactose is a monosaccharide.

The most complex polysaccharide is long-chain branched cellulose. You're not a beaver, wood chuck or ruminant - you gain no value in eating cellulose, leave it for the horses, cows, elephants, rabbits, etc. Cellulose is composed of thousands of simple glucose (monosacharides) molecules.
Other forms of complex polsaccharides are found in potatoes, oats, wheat, etc. A poly (many) saccharide (sugar = glucose) is composed of various combinations of sugar molecules (monosaccharides).

We've been through this. Lactose is a simple two molecule disaccharide composed of glucose + galactose. Your lactose intolerant gut cannot breakdown lactose after you've violently blown chunks because the mucosal lining (microvilli) of your small intestine is no longer making lactase. Lactase breaks down lactose into the two monosaccharide molecules (glucose + galactose). Until you build up the mucosal lining (microvilli) in your gut (sm. intestine) you'll do nothing more than pass lactose into your lg. intestine where the consortia of bacteria in your large intestine will create aching, gas, bloating & make you a miserable wretch - STOP eating ANY dairy products. Gee willikers. Again, that's how $hit works.

It takes "on average" 3 - 9 hours to evacuate your digestive track when your gut is operating optimally. If you've become lactose intolerant, don't expect lactose to pass during the 3 -9 hr. period. Instead, expect ANY dairy product to take much longer to evacuate your gut since you cannot breakdown the lactose. Drink copious amounts of water and do NOT eat dairy products - i.e. cheese, yogurt, ice cream, milk, cream, etc. unless you're a glutton for punishment.

Haven't had any icecream in 3-days! The only reason I had it the first couple days (Sun/Mon) when this started was because it seemed to be the only thing I could.eat that didn't make my stomach ache.

You missed something along life's gilded highway regarding emesis (vomit). Violent emptying of the stomach (emesis) & small intestine removes a great majority of the mucosal lining (microvilli) of the small intestine where lactase is produced. This is the reason any endocrinologist, gastroenterologist & simple M.D. will state do NOT eat dairy products of any form after blowing chunks.

True, I did not know that, primarily because I never have these types of issues. I can't even begin to remember the last time I vomited before this started, probably 30-yrs ago. When you told me what the vomitting did, I stopped with any dairy.

I sincerely hope you have no underlying condition. From an armchair's length I suspect you do not. I suspect you have nothing more than acute lactose intolerance from violent expulsions which will subside gradually as your microvilli (sm. intestine) build up their ability to produce lactase once again. What caused you to become ill is anyone's guess - I took a stab at suggesting Norovirus. BTW, Immodium while it will "bind" your stool for you it will NOT stop your lactose intolerance. Personally, I'd stay the course, no dairy, copious amounts of water + lots of rest. As Jim & I both know eat bland foods, easy to digest. If you're going to take anything take Lactaid to begin to quickly replenish lost lactase. FWIW, you gradually lose the ability to produce lactase as we age - a simple fact of life. Should you find yourself getting more & more stomach indigestion, just remember this - human's (as I recall) are the only species of mammal who continues to drink milk & eat dairy products beyond early developmental infancy.
