The trans looks awesome! Was this the first time doing a rebuild? I have an M21 that needs to be gone through. Great work, Paul.

Thanks Jimmy, This was the second time rebuilding a Muncie for me. A bit easier second time around. Does your M21 belong to a Pace car?

Best Muncie rebuilder is Ed Hartnett in Pennsylvania.

He is the favorite of the NCRS Corvette crowd.

Stick with GL-4 gear oil in a Muncie. It lacks sulfur that eats up the brass synchro's.

I use Sta-Lube GL-4 75w-90 in my Muncie. I get it at NAPA.

Shifts great.

Good to know, Stefano. I'll send you a text. I need a local guy to rebuild an M-21 and an M-14.

Firewall stampings

I've been messing around with making my own stamps because I dont see any offered to match what I had on my firewall. I made these from a little kit I got off Amazon. They aren't perfect but neither were the originals. I think I got them pretty close though.

I spent the weekend zinc plating and copy cad dipping the trans linkage. It came out ok, There are some blotches where the copy cad didn't take. My first batch turned out good then I think the plating solution got dirty or something? I dont think I'll bother with this anymore, its too much of a set up and takes a lot of trial and error to learn. The linkage will be fine and better than before so I will press on. While stuff was plating I would find other things to do like the fire wall stamps and some stainless trim. I restored the original window guides because I found the reproductions were a little off. I bead blasted then plastic dip then used the rivets like another member here (Kevin) to re-install guides. I unwrapped the stainless pcs from the polisher, installed new foam backing tape and put them back together now ready to install on car.

transmission assembly/mock up

Continued assembling the trans and doing a little detailing and mock up. I think the linkage is correct? I still have to adjust the linkage which seems pretty straight forward. The plating of everything may not be correct but I've seen and heard of different finishes but nothing concrete so I went ahead and did what I did. Looking at this come together motivates me.

Stephen, ended up getting them from heartbeat city like Joe recommended, 4 speed conversion was out of stock but they do have some other stuff I bought. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks Jimmy, this Olds community has been a lot of help, many good people here willing to give their expertise and help with hard to find parts. Glad to be a part.

Scrappie I thought you asked about window sweeps and rubbers around the doors and window openings, but I don't see that post now. Anyway, I used PUI for the sweeps, and the rear quarters are the most difficult to install in my opinion, especially that area at the rear of the quarter window. Having an old outer sweep from the rear quarter to use as a pattern piece is a big help to tweek the new outer sweep. I used Steel for the rubbers and you can purchase directly from them. The quality of product from either producer is very good, in my opinion. You can only buy PUI from a reseller, so contact them to gain that information. If this was not you asking about this, please disregard my post.

The ones I got from them about a year ago were PUI. Might want to call them and verify.

I'll share with you an instance where I was utterly silly after installing one of the rear outer quarter window sweeps. When both rear and both door sweeps arrived, one quarter sweep in the package arrived with the black protective tape still covering the chrome edging. At first glance I suspected I was sold 3 chromed sweeps and 1 non-chromed sweep. I called to inquire and the young lady just did not understand what I tried to explain. It was after I sent pictures of my problem to her did she call me on the phone to have a good laugh with me. And we both did laugh after she expalined to me that I simply needed to pull the protecive tape off to expose the beautiful chrome edging underneath.

I know it was stupid of me, but I want to share it because could this happen to someone else? I doubt it--only me....

Btw, my purchase of PUI sweeps came from The Parts Place. And it's Steele not Steel.

With regards to window sweeps, I would encourage you to salvage your originals or find an NOS set. The fronts are a bit easier to find for a few hundred dollars. The reproduction sweeps, both front and back, are noticeably different than the factory pieces. The “chrome” is simply cut on the repops, whereas, your originals will have a rounded “bullet” look to them. The indentations are also more pronounced at the seams on the originals / NOS versus reproduction. And before you tell me that’s taking it too far, don’t forget you’re also doing your own plating so you’re already in deep!

I will see if I can dig up some reference pictures for you and Stephen.
