I'm looking to get the exhaust done after my motor is finished & will want to put on a good set of mufflers. I was wondering if ordering a set of mufflers for a 72' 442 from the local muffler shop would work for my 72' Cutlass S? Any suggestions? I've heard some comment about some mufflers will "drone" when driving but I don't really mind that to much.

 

I like Walker Turbos. Mufflers are an aquired taste, since you have time, I always suggest go to some car shows and listen for what you like, then duplicate it.

 

I agree. I have had 4 sets on mine and finally found 18" case Pypes race pro's to be to my liking. I also installed an H pipe with them. I also ran an x before but that came off real quick. I did not care for the ricey sound.
Everyones taste is different however.

 

I have a set of Flow Masters on one car and a set of Magna Flows on the other. I kind of like the Flow Masters better. Everything is equal except the Flow Masters also have an X-pipe where as the Magna Flows does not have a cross over of any kind. I am thinking about adding a pair of resonators to the system with the Magnaflows.

 

We have Smithy Steel Paks on every Oldsmobile we own...........and they sound great............even Juju loves them on her '94 convertible..........

 

I have a set of no name muffler shop specials and they sound good - not too loud, no drone.

 

Ok. I'm sticking with manifolds on this build (I can hear the header fans screaming now). Can you use 2 1/2" pipe with manifolds?

 

yes if you use a reducer back wards. but i think pypes exhaust might sell 2.5 in. down pipes for manifolds.

 

That's actually a great choice, headers are not for everyone! Make sure your heat riser is functional, and you will need a block off plate for the crossover.

I have stainless steel magnaflows & i am happy with them. Mellow @ idle and they open up nicely.

 

One more vote for the Walker/Dynomax Super Turbos. I have had Flowmasters and Pypes as well. Like the Turbos the best.

 

Im going to the walkers and tail pipes. My neighboors finally complained and i now have to drive the car to the track 50 miles each way. if i plan on having my girl as co pilot it has to be quieter. chadman do you have a clip of what your car sounds like ?

That would be awesome. I'm torn between the cheaper thrush mufflers or the super turbos . The thrush mufflers don't dount bad I put them on my dads car .

 

John, check Gardner exhausts. They give as close to original sound as possible. A little pricey though.

 

Yeah I've done headers on Chevy's in the past & would rather not have to mess with them this go around. My manifolds dont have a heat riser in them. This car was originally a California car according to the PO so I'm guessing heat risers were not on those cars. I'm currently looking for the block off plate on Ebay.

Surprisingly enough they aren't as pricey as Parts Place.

 

If you are going to have a muffler shop do your exhaust, they can fab one for it at that time.

 

Eric, that's what I did. When I had the duals installed, Atlas cut a plug and welded it in place. Did a nice enough job it didn't need grinding. Plus it doesn't leak....

 

I'm going to check out the local Fountain Tire here. They are supposed to be good at bending exhaust. I'll ask about making that plug.

 

I have a guy here who is an exhaust artist, I can drop a car off in the morning tell him what I want and pick it up that afternoon. Find a place that does hotrods, talk to friends, get a referral.
