Best sounding exhaust/mufflers
Any opinions on the best sounding exhaust/mufflers for a 1970 SX 455.
I'm looking for that cool
70's muscle car sound that really turns the heads when the RPM starts to rock......
include pipe size and mufflers. Thanks.......

Do they still sell glass packs? Back in the sixties and early seventies those sounded great, however, there was some discussion about them being street legal in California. But they were still popular and on many cars.
Here's an article that may interest you. http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1e/bl966e.htm. Also you can do a Google on "Glass Packs" and all sorts of info emerges. They are still going strong.
This is a VERY subjective question. Some folks swear by Flowmasters, the rest of us swear AT them. Personally I like Walker Dynomax Turbos. Nice sound, no obnoxious droning, and the consistently outflow the (no)Flowmasters in magazine tests.
O'Reilly's has a display where you can actually here the Walker Dynomax Turbos compared to others. Keep in mind each car will sound different. Flowmaster has several series like 50 and 60 series (nothing to do with age of car) with the higher number being a little quieter. I am sure other parts stores have the same display. If I were doing a 50's car like Dan's 57, I would go with the old standby Smitty's to be period correct. A set of those on a 50's Olds is music and they are glasspacks. I would not put them on your car though. I would follow Joe' advice for your car. Use an X pipe or H pipe and I think you will be happy.
I've heard of people doing that before. Supposedley burning the fiberglass out of the glasspack makes them louder. I know that the two 2.5" x 45" Thrush glasspacks I have on my 71 98 sound great. At least I like the way it sounds.
I run smittys with 2.5" exhaust mendral bends all the way back no X pipe as my exhaust routes through the frame rails on the 57. The 455 sounds sweet at idle and does not drone at hiway speeds but when you get on it....sweet
Personally I LOVE the sound of the Flowmasters on my Olds.
Full 3" system with h-pipe on a built ongine with headers.
My Cougar has Dynomax Turbo with a 2 1/4" system and is much mellower but still has a nice deep sound to it. This engine is stock but with an Edelbrock intake and thru the stock manifolds.
I have a buddy with a built 351 in a Mustang running Hooker AeroChambers. They have a totally different sound to them. The only way I can describe it is a "Growl"
Whatever choice you go with however could be moot compared to the comparable sounds you hear. If your motor is stock and you're using manfolds as opposed to headers, you sound would be different from my Olds if you ran the same mufflers as me.
The only true test would be to find a comparable set-up as yours and use that as an example. Either that or go out and buy up a bunch of mufflers and do a test for the rest of us.

im running the magna flo 2 1/2 stainleess steel exhaust with x pipe.
the fit and sound are just what i was looking for. i would recommend it for that classic muscle car rumble both at ide and wot.

I have 2chamber flowmasters on my 69 cutlass car sounds really good especially when its hammer time but i have cherry bombs 2ft which thet call glass packs on my 72 olds deeper sound like the cherry bombs better both cars have manifolds no headers and i get alot of complements on sound so i think whatever you choose should sound good

It was also good that Joe clarified staying away from Flowmaster- but hard to draw conclusions as sound is in the ear of the beholder. I wonder if there is some technical reason to not use Flowmaster?

I have had flowmasters and walker dynomax. I like both of them but the flowmasters are more aggressive sounding than the dynomax. So like others said, it's a matter of personal preference.
Has anyone used Supertrapps? Don't they let you customize your exhaust tone?

Best sounding mufflers
Hi PopHop,
I used the DynoMax turbo muffler with a 3" exhaust but then I was pushing 500+ hp. It was a perfect old muscle car rumble. Later I put on an X pipe and the resonance in the cab of the car was terrible but without the X, it was fine. Their web site has a place where you can listen to most of their mufflers. If I were you, I would call them and describe the sound you want and let them suggest. I bought mine 10 years ago and their line has changed somewhat.

I have the magnaflow 2.5" with the tru x pipe on mine now. I am going to ditch the x pipe, don't like the ricey sound, and probably go with long case super turbo's.
I guess I don't need to gain 1/10 or so in the quarter as this is street only. There seams to be alot of hype for the x or even the h on street driven cars. I am not spinning 7-8k rpm like the nascar guys. But the vendors make alot of $ on promoting race products to the general public. We just HAVE to have it!
Granted the h pipe and x help, but not for me.
I like the old true dual sound.
