Im currently fabbing up a dual exhaust for my 1977 oldsmobile cutlass. It is stock with the exception of long tube headers. Id like it loud and aggressive but i dont want it to sound like a garbage truck. Lol any recommendations? Video links a plus. Thanks.

 

this is actually thrush turbo mufflers with manifolds. just a shade over stock olds 350 260h cam stock 73 short block and 7A 72 heads.



On the other end of the pectrum here is my 72 with headers , x pipe , hooker aero chambers and turn downs.

Ordered all my exhaust today, I ordered a 2.5 inch stamped x pipe and a pair of jones full boar flowpacks in 2.5 inch. they look like dynomax bullets but they have a v plate inside like a flowmaster 10 series. got out the bend cards and bent up a set of 3inch tail pipes for it [ have a pipe bender ] . It should talk.. ill post pictures and videos when its done. I went 2.5 inch but I wanted 3 inch tailpipes. love the look of 3inch tailpipes.

That 260H sounds great. How does it run in terms of low-end torque and did you have to run any other parts to allow you to use it, like different rocker arms/valve train?

 

Magnaflow. Got them on my 65 442 and on my Olds Powered GMC and love them.

 

Rocket kid. It used stock rockers , nothing fancy . Just a shade over stock. In my 72 it powered my car to a 13.86.

 

I like full length exhaust without mufflers, sounds great And I've heard plenty of cars with mufflers that are louder

 

Original motor with 600 cfm carb and custom exhaust. I already know it will be too loud with the 350 but hell, I need a "before" on here.

 

hedman headers, x pipe, 40 series flow masters 2.25 in' system with slant cut 2.5 stainless exit, put in your ear phones for a more realistic sound bite.

Considering the mufflers in question are high perfrmance mufflers I see it pretty damn fit for this section. Now if it was stock exhaust that would be pretty dumb to post here.

But the part in question is a performance part . Just because guys run pure stock I guess they are not racing according to your logic.

Some guys want the sound but are in no real rush to go fast. Personally it does not matter to me . Usually most mufflers that have a unique sound or boost hp are high performance mufflers . Not stock mufflers . Either way there is no real logic here . No one else complained .

 

I like the way you try to defend post when this guy never said it was a race car but did state he wanted a muffler that didn't sound like a garbage truck! Could it be because you posted two videos of your car? More than likely because he posted he did. My complaint is clear this isn't a post for performance or racing the guy was looking for a muffler that had a good sound. If you are unable to understand that from a racers point of view and from a performance standpoint that is your problem. As for others who didn't complain are they racers? Is there that many here who are? Seems to be lacking by the builds posted in this forum. Oh that is why stock motors and looking for mufflers that sound good is appropriate in this forum instead of general discussion.LOL

 

I posted to help him get some options on diffrent sounds 2 diffrent extremes . Really I don't see this post as an issue you can belive what ever you want but common sense tells me its really not an issue and its not worth bitching about . But then again some people just like to.

 

Whatever at your level of thinking of what amounts to high performance one might agree! I am more of if it is high performance and and racing post away!! Common sense that you have would need to be debated in a different forum when it comes to high performance!! The sound a muffler makes is in no way of what the guidelines require and you are so stubborn with a weak defence that is why i am laughing at the post and your silly responses as why you think this post deserves to be here. You clearly don't get it. This why I mentioned pure stock racing . What really classifies as a race car. Back in the day stock classes ran in the 12's and then pure stocks in the 14's and 15's and today there is still pure stock classes and daily driver classes at the strip. It seems you have a narrow path thought process. There is guys bracket racing or index racing in the 13's. I ran 13's with a near stock engine. I was racing . My stuff should be in the 12's and I built it to race the index pro class. For someone to say that at my level it may be high performance is like saying our are slow because you don't race a top fuler.

High performance mufflers generally are much louder than stock so its a high performance part in a stock application. So the conversation of roller rockers can come up for a car that is a daily driver but it is a high performance part so I would see it fit In this area. Magnaflow , flow masters , etc etc. Are high performance application mufflers. This is high performance and racing. So high performance parts are a part of it not just racing. Again narrow minded way of thinking you have.

 

I am running what we call around here 2 10s mufflers. Basically take a 2 1/2" super turbo remove the inlet and outlet pipe and weld the 3" pipes on the outside of the muffler. Now instead of routing exhaust through one pipe back and forth it goes through all 3 at the same time. Sounds amazing, when I start the car in front of the house it shakes my windows. It's called 2 10s because when local racers switched from a flow master type mufflers to this they gained .20 on their 1/4 mile.
downside to this is people hear me from few blocks away, upside to this is people start giving me thumbs up from far away.

Basically eliminate the circled areas and increase the inlet/outlet to 3".

I just wanted the O.P to know what a 40 series sounds like on an oldsmobile motor. That's.....all...? Open back and forth discussion saved me from a potentially botched motor build so I'm sort of an advocate of information exchanges. Read the original request...? "Post a video" lol.
