My fondest memory of baseball as a boy was the 1968 Tigers/Cardinals World Series. All the World Series games back then were day games. My 4th grade teacher actually brought a small black and white TV with "rabbit ears" into the classroom so we could watch the games in class.

Then, everything kind of came full circle, when after getting out of Grad School in '83, I got a job with a National Intelligence Agency, in of all places, St. Louis, where I live to this day. Crazy world!
That is a great story! My uncle went to school at Washington University, and my father went to visit him and to watch Bob Gibson pitch in 1968. I am not sure which game it was, though.

I didn't troubleshoot the old motor to determine issue - it became apparent the issue was the motor and evidently the centrifugal clutch switch or the contacts contained inside the centrifugal clutch switch. I'm not about to take it apart.

Net savings ~$750, That's a new/rebuilt PS gear box for the CS plus several dozen golf *****.

Hi everyone.

Another Thursday in the books. I swapped sides in inspection today so I wouldn't be signing any wheels, which means I can return them to service on Monday. Trouble is, I was on the side with the big halfs and it kicked my *** today. I had big plans of moving stuff to the house but I'm too pooped to pop. I hate that. It will be another fun day of it tomorrow.

Were the Cardinals in the World Series about 30 years ago, or some other important game? When I was a kid I delivered pizza for Domino's. My friend was a big Cardinals fan, why I don't know we were in Chicago. This big game came on and I had to work, so I went and got a Cardinals hat and after I'd leave the shop I'd put this hat on, and I had a sign I'd tape over the "Domino's" patch on my shirt that said Go Cardinals. Most of the stops I'd make the people were watching the game and would give me an update. I don't remember if they won or lost, but the manager of the shop found out I was wearing the hat and gave me an earful. He must have been for the other team. I still wear that hat.

Jamesbo I almost had it right, about the mules. That's a nice looking tractor. Now I really wish I had bought a bigger tractor since I'll never use the backhoe I had to have for its intended purpose. Maybe Deere will give me a good trade.

Norm have you dried your celebratory load of clothes yet? I think there's a malted in there for the victor.

Woke up this morning at 2 and I felt great. So I went in. I think we've been doing extra wheels all week to lighten the load for tomorrow. If I go to bed really early I might go in early again. I could take a nap when I get home, then do stuff at the house. I need to dig the Toad out and get it ready to be viewed by the guy from Ohio.

Okay not too early for a bite to eat. The sun is out. It appeared to have been raining all day when I walked out of the building. Supposed to be a nice weekend. Okay have a good evening everyone.

Mike - I have not dried a celebratory load of clothing. I have turned the dryer ON & OFF maybe a dozen times to convince myself I'm not hallucinating. The little things in life which bring such happiness.

The area I was working - small. Yes, the doors on both the washing machine & the dryer open completely with ~1/4" to spare. I had to move the dryer forwards & backwards numerous times to gain access. I had to climb over the washing machine to get behind the dryer - a real treat with a busted up rotator cuff. New upgraded motor, new upgraded wire harness, installed two new t-stats (the originals were fine but MAW), new pulley for the motor pulley switch (original was fine but MAW) and I splurged on a new START SW **** (I actually broke the original trying to figure out WTH was wrong w/ this machine). NOTE: The plethora of drying cycles on this bad boy - so many ***** & buttons to choose from. This old e-m machine will last another 40 years.

EDIT: The original START SW **** was black. The new white **** provides a nice contrast.

Mike - Around the 30-years ago timeframe you referenced, the Cardinals were in the World Series in '82, '85, and '87. Only you would know which year is closest to when you were working at Dominos.

Good evening guys,

Well today didn't go quite as planned. I was piddling around in the garage and noticed one of my battery tenders for my motorcycles was showing as not fully charged, when it should have been. It was the one attached to the Indian, which is also my oldest tender. At first, I thought the tender might have went bad, but I plugged that one in to the Yamaha and it was working fine. Took the cover off the Indian and the battery was completely dead. Well isn't that the $hits, but not a surprise because it's the original 2016 OEM battery. 5-years is a long time for a motorcycle battery. I was hoping it would make it through the winter and I was definitely putting a new one in it in the Spring. However, I was also thankful that it died at home and not 2 or 300-miles away in God knows where. Went in and did some battery research and ordered a hig quality Yuasa AGM battery with 310 CCA which is strong for a motorcycle battery. Had never accessed the battery area on this bike before, they didn't make it easy. First you have to take off 2 side covers, then the driver and passenger seat, and finally a battery cover under the seat. Of course all the Allen screws that have to be removed have been over torqued, and you're trying to break them loose without something slipping and scratching your paint up, AiYiYi. Well I got everything torn down to get to the battery, but I've left the battery in until the new one gets here sometime between the 14th and 22nd of October. When I was taking.the sidecovers off the frame, I also noticed one of the rubber grommets that the side cover attaches to was missing, there are 3 on each side. I ordered a replacent with the battery, and also an Indian oil change kit for start-up in the Spring.

So that was pretty much my day, motorcycle mania! Hope you all had a.good one!

Chris it would have had to be 87. I just looked it up, they lost to the Twins. That part I don't remember. I always knew when I was at a house that was for the other team. They would answer the door with, your Cardinals... Strange about the battery.

Norm that's a cozy spot to do laundry. Looks like the dryer needs a paint job.

Now I'm hitting the sack. Thought it would be earlier. Overtime is in jeopardy! Have a good night everyone.

Norm, I don't like the layout of your utility room AT ALL. Holy hell, that water heater ought to be all the way to the back. Not too many people would decide to revive a dryer that old with a new motor, as that's often the kiss of death. I bet you would've had it fixed sooner had it been more convenient to pull it out of that room to work on. My back hurts just looking at the picture.

Don't blame you for replacing those other parts while you had it apart. I had one pulley go to hell on my dryer (not the time I took the pic flipping it off), and decided to replace all the pulleys and belt at the same time. Individual parts would've totaled about $100, but I found a kit on Amazon that had all the pulleys and belt for less than $40. Might've even been less than $30.

Jeff - It would have not been finished sooner - I spent three months building brick columns and a fence. It’s a dryer. I don’t have six kids and a wife depending on a clothes dryer. Life moves forward.

Oh Man O MAN!!! And I thought I had stories of tight dryer installations! Well I was all set to give you kudos and salutations for a job well done, and then you show a picture of your washer/dryer/water heater!! You really had no choice! The only way you can replace your washer or dryer is to remove your water heater... WoW!! No seriously Norm, Congrats on getting it fixed. But now I understand why you were so determined to fix that dryer and not replace it. Nevertheless, good on you.

At 6.0” 160 lbs I’m quite nimble & agile. That utility room is an addition located external to the exterior of this house. House built in 1930. I think they added that room in the late 1950s or early 1960s. That window blind to the right covers an exterior wall double hung window.

The home has 2 chimneys. Original heat was via four wood burning stoves, and a fireplace. Heat was upgraded to home heating oil at some point. An additional bedroom, huge mud room and large kitchen were additional additions to the original home where they raised 6 children.

Original home had no bathroom. Original home had no shower or bathroom. Original home had a double seater outhouse and a true old fashioned wash house out back. The wash house had a shower and they washed clothes in the wash house. When they added on the huge kitchen and bedroom they also brought the outhouse and bathroom indoors. The bathroom was the size you’d see in any old fashioned bar/saloon - tiny. They wheeled a wringer washing machine into the kitchen on wash day and tossed the drain hose out the kitchen window next to the sink where they attached the inlet water hose to the washing machine. They basically ruined the house sill plate on the side of the house where they ran that water line out the kitchen window as it created a large campground for termites which infiltrated and ruined the wood sill plate and the wood flooring in the kitchen under the sink and surrounding area.

I’ve upgraded & renovated nearly every inch of this house in 20 years of ownership. Life moves on. 🌞

BTW, when I converted one bedroom which adjoins the back wall of that utility room, my current full glass partitioned walk-in shower is larger than the previous bathroom. My current bathroom isn’t really a bathroom - it’s more like a large restroom at an upscale old fashioned mens cigar room restaurant with whirlpool jacuzzi, double vanity sink enclosed in a period correct wood cabinet, double wood wall insert medicine cabinets with beveled mirror doors, 8’ x 6’ walk-in closet and solid oak 6” crown molding. It’s a nice place to pinch a loaf. 😜

I rewired the entire home and upgraded with a 200 amp drop line service to a new service panel. All duplexes are polarized and each circuit breaker is based upon average amp draw per room. I did not rewire duplexes separate from lighting. Each room had ~4” droop at center. House is supported on concrete/brick pillars - which is where the sill plate resides under exterior walls. Floor joists were all supported on 4”x4” wood pillars standing on bricks. I removed all wood pillars installed all new CONCRETE blocks (true cbu’s) and leveled the entire home.

Removed all old heating duct work and plenum, installed new duct work and new heat pump combination unit. Removed all lead/galvanized plumbing and upgraded to PEX.

That’s just a couple things. I like old school vintage homesteads. This is a true Southern Cottage home - well, it is now. 😀

Bad battery and no kickstart is a bad combo on the road We bought Motobatt to our Harleys and my OEM battery last for
11 years. But the Honda got a Yuasa high quality battery like the OEM this spring.Have tried cheap motorcycle batteries and
it´s a pita

Norm, When I bought my 1896 [shotgun style] farm house, i was a rental property on a hobby farm. It had a left over hippie renting. She had laid slate in concrete over the hard wood floors in the foyer and nailed up a 2x4 loft in the bed room. the dining room had glued down indoor/outdoor carpet covering the hard wood. The plumbing was held together with hose clamps and there was a 4 fuse box providing electricity

When I took possession I tried to evict her and she answered the eviction that she couldn't move because she didn't have enough money for gas to look for another home.[ yes that was the "answer"] Her VW bug was parked in the front yard

After, I finally booted her out, It took months to get the place livable and over the years, I've added on new rooms enlarged kitchen added decks and new rooms to the back

The owner had brought the plumbing inside by walling up the back of the center [shotgun] hall , It had 4 out buildings [garage, barn, garden shed etc] that are still standing because the termites are holding hands

I bought it in 1976 and should have burned it to the ground but now I have a historic marker out front

I guess it has served me well

but the white 4 board fencing makes the place a maintenance nightmare. It's like painting seat in a stadium, when you finish you start again

James - I enjoy hearing about the stories of the homestead/acreage you purchased. I looked up your burial ground a couple years ago and found your plaque and history of the farm, etc. we talked about Bascomb Samples. You also spoke of the hippie chick you had to evict. I think that's a great story - I'm sure she was a handful. Fun stories.

I have a small collection of photos from a portion of the renovations I've performed on the Ponderosa over the years:

Speaking of motorcycles, aside from batteries, time to renew my safety inspection & pay taxes on it.

I’m replacing the grip on my, you’re going to love this, ancient Spalding Executive 20000 Titanium Head 25 degree loft #5 fairway club. I put a new Dri-Tac on beginning of summer & it’s already shot. What else is new. Those grips feel nice but they have no durability. I replaced all the grips on all clubs with Pride grips beginning of summer and they not only feel good but they have great durability. This Spalding #5 is my favorite club for long Par 3 and fairways at 165 - 175 yards. Great loft to it. Sometimes new isn’t better - this thing stands the test of time. 😀

Work progresses on the sale and restoration of grandma's house. We gave up fighting the insurance and took the portion of the full payout they gave us. They argued that "depreciation" offset it; I was like, the house is 165 years old, what do you want? I know that insurance agents get their bonuses based on how much they screw the policy holders; if you know an insurance agents, make sure they know to get right with Jesus, else they're probably going downstairs when the time comes.

Purchase agreement of the house and its lot signed, donation agreement of the lot to the north signed, access agreements to both signed, and the work began this Monday. They removed the shattered porch roof and cleaned up, so far, and stored material in the garages. Closing should be later this month. It's going to Indiana Landmarks Foundation, which is a nonprofit designed to save historic buildings. They will fix it, and sell it as a home needing renovation.

I enjoy reading the post about old houses. I don't live in a old house, my house is a typical suburban PHX tract home no character or charm but its comfortable and as of Sept 1st it's mine not the banks !!!
If money were no object and I were a millionaire/billionaire my hobby would be restoring old houses, I would rescue every old house I could !!
I would try to save them all, seems new houses are thrown together and have no charm, no style or character, sure materials like windows, flooring etc... have come a long way but its not the same.
I have a nephew who is a architect and purchased a 150 year old house in Lagrange IL. he says it has it's trials and tribulations but he would do it again in a heartbeat !! he says heating and cooling are a challenge because its not up to todays standards for insulation and he has a few rooms where he can roll a golf ball across the room with the speed of Nascar because its off level, but he smiles every time the real hard wood floors creak or kids slide down the banister or his wife still uses the root cellar.
I watch a lot of the cable home improvement shows and turn green with envy every time I see someone buy one of those old homes.
I know it can be awfully expensive to restore or maintain a vintage home but I would if I could.
I have mentioned in several post that although I was a suburban/city kid I used to spend summers on cousins central Indiana farms and I fondly remember those old farm houses they were so cool !!.
I guess I'm doing my part for preservation by keeping Oldsmobile on the road. everybody have a good day.

The day you can truly call your home "your" home (when that piece of paper transfers over to your name) can be a life changing moment. At 10 years into a 30 year mortgage, I renewed to a 15 year mortgage & paid that mortgage off in 10 years. A wonderful day in history. 😉
I have several H.S. friends who own homes in old Oak Park - one resides just down the street from Hemingway's home. Some nice bungalows in Oak Park. 😉

Thanks, Glenn. Only 59,000 miles on it. Same engine. Unfortunately about one year after my purchase a cam lobe wore down and the top-end/head was replaced with a newer 2011 head. It's had only basic parts replacements for the most part: compensator, stator, VR, Start SW, etc. - maybe a couple more. It's been ridden to Canada, California and Florida (numerous times).

Chris, Any Time ya wanta come paint come on down

Norm, You are really only renting your home from the governent. If ya don't think so try not paying your property taxes

Solly, My goal is to save a little piece of this orb. The old [historic] farm house will be the cemetery office and the cemetery will look like a pasture even though it's a cemetery

James - Someone appoint you King Kill-Joy of the day!

Why I outta...

Dryer has now passed it's first full drying cycle. As Mike stated its celebratory first load of clothes.

Next, on the agenda will be for Mike to drag his *** over to my place and paint it for me. 😜

You know what you get when you hit the "Windows Key" and the "." (period) Key, right? 😛 Carry on, nothing more to see here.

Y'all are are getting my panties all twisted - I think it's time to really celebrate with a chocolate malted milk shake. 😁

Heh... I did not know that trick about Window + . and will be using it in the future.

Well, I'll go ahead and say it: you guys that restore these old houses, please wear proper filtration masks. Asbestos and lead.

Having done one remodel, I don't have a lot of desire to do that again. However, it will eventually occur with the lake cottage, as I hate the windows, paneling, ****-poor insulation, and wiring not up to current codes. Oh, and the bathroom, that is actually the first thing that will get redone, hope to do that next year.

Speaking of the joys of home ownership

Water splashing off deck rotted the TDL door at the bottom. Got a new one a few weeks ago as the monsoon set in

Got it hung today or as Norm would say R&R

FWIW, the whole room was added on 30 years ago
