Jim - I'll turn 67 this September. I managed to have successfully survived the draft, the '60s, the counter revolution, the riots and the burning of Chicago. I shook the hand of JFK (when I was eight years old) and my first kiss was from the most absolute cutest little girl who lived on the corner from our house when I was five years old - underneath a picnic table with three feet of snow stacked on top. She was crazed - she took advantage of me I am here to tell you.

We had milk delivered also as well as bread [cookies sweets] and of course Charlie Chips

Norm, when I 1st moved in this 1896 house w/o central heat, I'd put a hot brick in a bed warmer to warm up the sheets

Speaking of kids, Did y'all read about the kids in Montana that took 3 goats to school and painted 1,2,4 on them [They're still searching for # 3]

Whenever I'm in Northern Europe, I'm always reminded of the manure+hay bricks they used to build their homes from. And, they're still standing.

OMG - those cans of Charles Potato Chips? Is that what you're talking about? I remember we had a different brand potato chip delivered for some time in a White can with Red Lettering. Then, I guess Mom cancelled them or they went out of business but then we did have Charles Chips delivered for awhile. Those are darn good.

My Dad's sister's husband had a potato chip machine in his garage - a big old fancy machine - all stainless steel and stuff. Had a chain driven conveyor belt on it about 10' long. He'd slice the potatoes on the wall, put them in the potato machine fryer, and then the stainless steel conveyor belt would move the chips from the fryer to the heating element stage, then to a drying stage, then out onto a large stainless steel finishing area where he'd salt them down. OMG they were good.

Ok, You axed

This mouse is driving along in his Mercedes [ a nice one AMG SLS] and he hears a cry for HELP. It looks down in this deep ravine and sees a Rhino has fallen off the edge of the cliff and is wedges between some rocks at the bottom of the ravine .

The Rhino says, "Please help me I'm stuck and I'll perish if you don't help me.

So The mouse gets some rope out of his trunk, ties it to the bumper of his Benz throws the end down the ravine , The Rhino ties a bowline in, wraps it around him and the mouse puts his car in reverse and pulls the Rhino out.

Naturally, The Rhino is most grateful and thanks the mouse and says, "Anytime I can help you, please just ask"

Months pass

And the Rhino is going along the edge of the ridge and hears "Help" He looks over the edge and sees the mouse has driven is SLS over the edge and is stuck at the bottom of the ravine.

So the Rhino puts 2 feet on one side of the ravine and 2 feet on the other side of the ravine. Hangs his Johnson down the ravine. The mouse jumps out of his car and climbs up the rhinos Johnson to safety.

And the moral of the story is......................If ya got a big enough Johnson, ya don't need a Mercedes

So I'm guessing that we are to infer Montana children are not the brightest?

Allan I think the blue caps were probably what the place had laying around. This was up home in Illinois. After the blue caps walked off, I brought over four mismatched black caps. After the einstein brother in law took the car to put air in the tires, and put the caps on the tops of the tires and drove off and lost them all, I brought four more mismatched caps and told my Mom to not let anyone drive the car again. Oddly enough the missing caps bugged her so she waited for me to visit and then take care of any car things that needed to be done.

Bed time. Tomorrow being Friday, my co-worker was supposed to take over in inspection to turn wheels. Conveniently he took tomorrow off, putting the screws to me. Also that meant I couldn't have the day off so I had to change my plans to go meet my sister. Eh, the lead won't be there tomorrow and I at least don't have to listen to that fat a$$hole who runs his pie hole all day long.

Okay, have a good evening everyone. Onward Friday!

Okay, the JFK assassination;
The Mob did it, and they were partially goaded on by the CIA who turned a blind eye. Sam Giancana was upset about 2 things; - the money he was losing in Cuba and the fact that Jack was tupping or had tupped his mistress. Giancana paid Joseph Kennedy a lot of money to help swing the vote in JFK's favor in 1960; - in fact Dick Nixon probably was the legitimate winner, he got more of the popular vote, but JFK had it where it counted. The idea was that the Kennedy administration was supposed to take it easy on the Mob, and that Jack would call off his brother who had it in for Jimmy Hoffa as a favor to New York and Chicago. The problem was that Joe never quite told Jack or Bobby the details of the deal. And by the time he did, the damage was already starting and Giancana was feeling double-crossed and betrayed. The CIA angle is a bit more interesting. During the 50s the CIA hired some dubious people with "connections" to do some dirty work in south and central America. It was the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship for both. The CIA got its "wet" operatives trained, and the Mob got the benefit of the FBI being given a bum steer or stonewalled. The Eisenhower administration turned a blind eye, Ike was always on a golf course, and Dick Nixon had an outstanding "Debt" to repay. Seems he was wined and dined and gambled off a small fortune in Havana in 1950 and someone graciously picked up his marker. It was all on the up and up, it went down as a "campaign donation", but Dick was effectively "bought". This was the main reason behind his tearful "Checkers" speech that secured him on the Eisenhower ticket. At any rate, Dick knew "some guys" who also happened to be on the CIA's payroll, and together they put together the Bay of Pigs invasion. You see, Dick had it in for Fidel, (see the marker above) and treated him like dirt when he showed up in New York in 1959 looking for business after the Revolution. Fidel never forgot about that, and he started seriously rethinking his position in the world as a result. So the stage was set for the first and possibly the biggest fiasco of the Kennedy Administration, - the Bay of Pigs.
Jack walked into it blind. Nixon had figured he would be president, not JFK, so he left some loose ends. As history tells us, it was a blunder right from the start, and a lot of "operatives" ended up scrambling and taking cover during the fallout. Most of these were CIA mobsters, many of which could be directly tied to Dick Nixon himself. Now the stage was set for Watergate, as all of the break-in people were ex-CIA people with dubious connections and were at the Bay of Pigs or directly associated with it.
So, what transpired was that JFK grew up, learned, and never made the same mistake again. He started to look into the CIA and his brother was looking into the Mob. Now it was becoming a question of "asses in and horns out", the CIA and the Mob started to look for ways to protect themselves and time was running out. They both knew if Kennedy got a second term it was over. They didn't want to take the chance, so they manipulated a rogue Commie group that was loosely tied to the Cubans into action along with planning their own "action". When Oswald said he was a patsy he was probably right, anyone with any kind of military training or marksmanship knows that shooting a target that is moving away from you is next to impossible. There's a chance that Oswald's shot hit Kennedy, but the "magic bullet" defense and the Zapruder film evidence suggests there were at least 2 other shooters present. Oswald was set up to take the fall, and he had figured it all out and wasn't about to. So the Mob took care of him and paid out Jack Ruby's issues while he went to jail. And then the big coverup started.
So why did the Warren Commission obfuscate and bury it all? Because a few of the Republican members knew or had an inkling of what was going on and they knew that any revelation of serious wrongdoing by a government agency would cost the US the Cold War at the very least, and possibly create a revolution domestically. The Warren Commission sat throughout the late 60s when America was becoming a racial powderkeg and Vietnam was becoming a huge problem. They had to stall and redirect, and yes, there were some personal reputations at stake too. Everyone figures Gerry Ford was a bumbling idiot, - he wasn't. He knew a lot more than he let on, and he was the logical choice in the Warren Commission and later after Watergate in 1974.
So to finish the job and make sure that Jack's legacy never went beyond myth, Bobby got taken care of in 1968. Sirhan Sirhan was a patsy too. The full story on either assassination will probably never be known, the Warren Commision stuff is locked until 2039, and by then anyone even remotely associated with it all will be long dead and forgotten.
The thing is, the Mob lost it's shorts in Cuba after Castro took over. After the October Crisis of 1962 JFK was actively looking at ideas to make up with Castro and accept his regime, and that would have meant clearing the Mob'd supposed claim on property because Castro wasn't prepared to budge on his foreign ownership laws. So it was coming down to money and a man's word; both betrayed, and someone had to pay the piper. Dallas was the best place to do it too, hostile town, hostile crowd, and way outside of Kennedy's protective orbit.

So there you have it. And no, I'm not a conspiracy theorist or a nut. All of what I've said is public record, and is easily available to look up. A reputable English historian recently wrote a very exposing book about the American activities in central and South America, and it all dovetailed what some of the nutcases and whack-jobs had been saying all along, they just didn't have the knowledge to tie it all together. Oliver Stone's movie was sort of on the right track, as was Jim Garrison, but it wasn't as sensational as they made it out to be. The thing is, there is no such thing as a secret when more than one person knows something, in fact, it's next to impossible to hold it in. That's Human Nature. So in this case, it was an open secret, but no one could and still can't prove anything beyond a shadow of a doubt. That's buried with the Warren Commission.

And now I'm tired of typing...

Thanks Marc, I agree with your take, I wan't aware of Nixon's Cuban connection or that he planned the Bay of Pigs

I've been to Cuba and IMHO when Batista was in power it was totally run by the Mob, Castro just played both ends against the middle [USSR and US] and we lost out. One of the interesting things to me is the Cuban perspective. When Castro took over it wasn't the averaged Joe that fled to Miami, it was the doctors, lawyers engineers etc leaving the country without much needed human resources

Seems to me often it's the old Money 'Greed Ball" that is behind alot of political happenings

But What's new U.S foreign affairs has been one mistake after another for 100's of years

Former president Jimmy Carter said Tuesday on the nationally syndicated radio show the Thom Hartmann Program that the United States is now an “oligarchy” in which “unlimited political bribery” has created “a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors.” Both Democrats and Republicans, Carter said, “look upon this unlimited money as a great benefit to themselves.”

Hi everyone.

Busy day at work, but got out a little early. Things sort of got jammed up at the end, but we managed to get it all done. Got four days of that nonsense next week.

Got a message from my sister to call her when I was done with work. Called but she didn't answer. No doubt changing plans for the weekend. Hope she calls back soon, I'm pushing it with Tiger for the weekend and if I take too long to take him in, they might revoke my reservation.

Marc you sound like you were right in the middle of it all. The JFK stuff was before my time, but I plan on being around in 2039 so I'll get to hear what all the report has to say. Also, isn't Jackie's dress and/or hat sealed up in a time capsule, also to be opened in 2039? I thought I heard that somewhere or read it.

I think Jimmy Carter should crawl under a rock somewheres. Talk about un-relevant.

Well gotta get undone from work and see what my sister wants to do. Really glad it's Friday, this was a long week.

Mike, I wasn't, the assassination went down before I was born.
I won't be around in 2039, I'll be 75 then, and after 30 years of shiftwork in a chemical plant, the likelihood of me making it that far is remote.
At any rate, as I said, the more I learn about what the US has been doing the more scared I get. What's also scary is learning about these people's personalities and such, you begin to see that a lot of them weren't all that bright, many couldn't really carry a thought through to completion, and some were flat out uncaring or stupid. JFK was addled on some pretty wicked dope most of the time; he had Addison's Disease, and that would leave him incapacitated. Khrushchev had read about it, and got really scared when they met in Vienna in 1961. It was to the point where Khrushchev had told his people he didn't want to deal with an unpredictable drug addict, so he was boisterous and rude throughout. Kennedy was gooned out of his touque, tried to placate him by dealing with him with humour and condescension like he had with some senators back home, and Khrushchev wasn't buying it. He got into Kennedy's face and asked him flat out, "Do you want to start World War III? I'm not here to fool around!" Kennedy, to his credit, realized that this was a bit different than dealing with some hillbilly senator or congressman, backed down and shut up. He learned quickly but was humiliated by this meeting, and he vowed it wouldn't happen again. "He treated me like some damn kid, he walked all over me", was the quote, and so when the next big crisis came up, that over Cuba, he took a harder and more serious line. His famous meeting where he agonized over a nuclear first strike was only conciliatory because he was again gooned, and wasn't thinking rationally and so had to have everything clarified and talked out. Good thing too, because previously, he sided with the hawks. And just to cap it off, the only reason we're not dust floating in between Venus and Mars is because a Russian sub driver had the foresight to ignore a firing order, and the American task force leader let it slide unchallenged. Had it been for the politicians, we'd all be dead, they both gave orders to strike if the other side didn't back down and when the US ships blocked the line the Russians were supposed to go to a shooting war. Cooler heads prevailed, and forced the politicians to reset.
As for Carter, he's right, he's absolutely right, and he ought to know, he fought that all throughout his term.
Carter is unique in that he was an outsider who honestly wanted to do something decent, and the "Establishment" wasn't having it. His presidency went down as being a lame duck mess, mostly because he couldn't get a thing done and every time he opened his mouth the dollar plummeted and he was referred to as "Kind and Good; Kinda stupid and good for nuthin'" but in actuality he got frozen out in Congress and his choice of aids left something to be desired. He, like Hoover, was far more successful afterwards than during.
Oops...gotta go...later, guys...

To Jimmy Carter's credit, he signed Proclamation 4771 (Registration Under the Military Selective Service Act) July 2, 1980 re-establishing the Selective Service registration requirement for all 18- to 26-year-old male citizens born on or after January 1, 1960. I wish he had gone one step further and require all males to serve a minimum of six weeks military basic training followed by two years of mandatory service in the U.S. Armed Forces or community service program prior to reaching their 26th birthday.

Speaking of Cuba...

Now I am sad. Tiger is in jail and you know what, I think he looks forward to it once he gets there. The other two hated going there.

Finally spoke with my sister. She just wanted to confirm our plans for the weekend. I had to laugh, she's getting the run around from Uhaul. They have become an awful company but I still use them, but renting trucks and trailers is something very foreign to her and it's amusing listening to her tell her tale.

Once again, I really don't know a lot about Kennedy. Lots of trivia-type stuff about the family over the years, but he was long gone before I emerged on the scene, and contemporary stuff was not really taught in my schools. Every year we started back at the beginning, the Continental Congress, George Washington. Anyway, two trivial things I know about JFK was that he is the one that instituted paying tax on bank interest, and he made a speech in Germany where he unknowingly(at the time) said I am a donut.

Haven't got much done. Sat down and fell asleep and almost missed taking Tiger to jail. Then went to the Awful house and came home and looked a couple things up, and tidied up in the house a little. Now it's about time for bed because I'm getting up extra early, but not 2am, to be to the airport for an 8oclock flight. Hope the day goes well. I should be home by Sunday morning.

Thought briefly about that 39 Olds for sale in the classifieds, but don't think that's something I would enjoy for long. Now I'm really liking that 77 Delta Pace Car for sale in Illinois. Now -that- would be a car to scream around in. But it still isn't an Imperial. Oh well.

So have a good weekend everyone. I'll be around, and around...

Norm, this tank has feet on it. They set on those concrete solid brick or blocks. You just have to make sure the bricks are level. Love the joke about the bologna!
Allan, next step is the heater. I had a old furnace in my shop at the old house. I have a friend that has a furnace that he was going to use in his shop but decided not to. I may see about using that. We'll see..
Jim, I also hate the "No Problem" response. Where did that come from, anyway???

Good Evening Guys:
The last couple days have been busy with the continuing yard work. Yesterday I unloaded another 1 1/2 yards of sandy loam and spread it on the front yard and covered the roots from the oak tree. I have some odd grass I have to till up and then I will be ready of the sod. I am estimating I will probably put down 3 pallets of St. Augustine sod and maybe 4. In addition to the sod I used 1,000 of river rock in two areas of the back yard. After I get the sod down I am done with the yard. Then I start on the patio and deck which is attached to the patio. The entire area is about 20x20 and will all be deck when I am done. I will have to demo the patio since it settled and cracked. I have a jack hammer I bought at Harbor Freight to do that. Big project. Then when I am done with that I can start on my 57 Chevy. I will probably squeeze the golf car and the 1946 Cushman in somewhere.
Marc, I was a senior in high school when JFK was assassinated. That is some interesting info I have never seen before. I remember Khrushchev well but I have no memory of the Cuban missile crisis. I see you make no mention of LBJ. Lot's of folks thought he had some involvement. Although I have never been a fan of LBJ and never will be, I find it hard to believe he was involved. Nixon was an interesting character. I have been to both Nixon's and LBJ libraries. I have been to Clinton's also but only because it is part of history. It was like being behind enemy lines.
I have a car show to go to tomorrow. It is one I go to every year. It starts at 4:00 and I will probably get there at 1:00 to get a good parking place that is shaded in the afternoon.
It is bedtime and that is all I have tonight.
Good night Chet, good night David.

Marc, thanks for the history lesson. Some interesting stuff there. Due to work schedules, the family is getting together tomorrow for the "4th". I had a pork butt for pulled pork sandwiches for the get together in the slow cooker while I was at work. Pulled it apart and made some BBQ sauce. Now cooling down in the fridge. Summer fianally showed up this week, and the humidity has been climbing. I don't see any car shows on the schedule until July. For some reason they (we) don't have much around here until then, then it is one after another. Greg, I can't remember if I mentioned that the Gilmore Car Museum is going to have an Olds show August 24th. Might be a bit of a drive for ya though. Sheesh, almost 2am. time to take a shower and hit the hay.

Being a child of the 60's I guess I need to educate y'all with sum popular bumper stickers of those days

' No more ugly children.........................sterile LBJ:

Pall Mall Can't Spall

Since absolute power corrupt absolutely and LBJ had been in the Senate for a 100 years, he knew how to work the system and his programs [IMHO] did nothing but buy votes

Glenn - You're doing an awesome job on yard work!
Mike - I don't envy you. My last career position (~13 years) had me in four airports (domestic & international) weekly. I felt like a useless piece of jet trash.

I was following behind a high school teacher's vehicle about 25 years ago. Her rear bumper stick read:
Women Are Awesome Teachers - Your Following One
Hopefully she wasn't teaching the English language.

Dan, I remember you mentioned the Olds show at Gilmore and I thought I might be able to go but I forgot we go on the Old US27 Motor Tour that week. Have you ever seen that? It's a blast! Starts in Auburn, Indiana and goes all the way to Cheybogan, Mi.,mostly on old 27, sort of like some of the Route 66 tours are. Starts on Monday in Auburn and ends on Saturday night. Has most cars usually between Dewitt and Clare (about 500 last year). I know you are on the west side of the state but you should check it out if you can.You can drive as much or as little as you want, lots of people just meet up with us at a town and put their car in the show. Clare is usually the biggest, they shut down the whole town!

Morning Guys:
Norm, I guess the teacher didn't have spellcheck back then. Pettix is a piece of work. Maybe he can find a fencepost to go argue with. Thanks for the comments on the yard. It had been neglected when I was working. I hope to be done with it in the next two weeks. Laying the sod is all that is left.
Jim, you are spot on with LBJ. His election in 1948 was very questionable after a recount when 200 additional votes appeared for Johnson. He was probably more corrupt than anybody to ever occupy the White House.
Well, I need my second cup of coffee and then have to go out and clean the whitewalls on the Olds for the car show today. Hope everybody has a good day.

Glenn

Glenn, Have you ever heard [or read] "A Texan Looks at LBJ"?

I have not. I was stationed in Texas from 67 until 69 and know most Texans did not like LBJ. LBJ was a pal of George Parr (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Berham_Parr) who was known as the Duke of Duval County and helped LBJ get elected in 1948. Parr was a very corrupt and powerful person. I looked at the listing for the book and it looks like one I need to read. When we were in Austin in March when our grandson was performing his solo at the UT Campus we had time to kill so we went to the LBJ Library. Lady Bird had more brains than LBJ and was where the family fortune came from. She had the first TV station in Austin which was a monopoly for years thanks to LBJ.

Well, now you guys got me interested. I'm going to have to look up LBJ. I didn't because I thought him to be a rather unsavory character (a bonafide POS) who while he used and abused people, managed to get it back ten-fold with the whole Vietnam thing. I didn't realize he was so well hated. When I did my articles on the dead presidents series from the US mint, one of our club's American members wrote me a long and involved letter about why he absolutely hated LBJ. I'm going to have to dig it up and research it.
This is gonna be interestin'...

On the plus side, sold a watch and $300 worth of junk silver coinage today, and managed to get the Electra back from downtown and into the "barn" before the hail started.

Good morning everyone.

Rolled into town a little while ago, and dropped my sister at the airport on the way home. The trip was uneventful, once we got going. In usual fashion, Uhaul arbitrarily changed our reservation multiple times and when we showed up they didn't have a truck or a trailer. They told us basically we were out of luck. My sister, in unusual fashion, got quite indignant and suddenly there was a truck, but we'd have to drive a half hour to pick up the trailer. By the time it was done they went to get the trailer for us and discounted the rental by $126. Not substantial, but it was the best they could do. We finally got the car loaded around 5 and hit the road, drove all night, stopping for a couple hours in Greenville, SC. I'm glad to be home. The truck and car are out front and I'll take the whole deal over to the shop and come home in one of the cars, and I'll take my truck and trailer up to the airport some time this week and pick up my car in the employee lot. I don't have to have the truck back until Thursday. Hm.

I wish I knew more about LBJ, as he was president when I was born. In fact, his grandson Patrick was born the same day as me. I was almost named Patrick because of it, but instead was named after my Mom's horse she had growing up. She'd never tell me which end. I would like to go down and see his ranch. He's got an Amphicar and the Texas people have gone over and over it, and it's well documented with the mileage, condition, etc.

And now I'm gonna crawl into bed for a little while. Can't sleep too long because I gotta do vigorous activity to be tired early this evening for work tomorrow. I even drove right past the Awful house and didn't stop in. Really, no place for a rig. I might go later when I have the car.

So have a good Sunday everyone. I haven't gone to bed at this time in over a year.
