Mike - When the house was built (1930), the only source of heat was via one fireplace & five wood burning stoves - 2 stoves tapped into one chimney, & 3 stoves tapped into the other chimney (1 of which was the cooking stove). The chimneys weren't built with chimney liners. Chimney liners were not required by building code(s) during the early days of building homes, they were required beginning in the early 1940s. Brick & mortar were the only components separating the tremendous internal chimney heat from interior walls, rafters & roofing. Flue liners weren't even a building requirement. Many buildings caught fire & burnt to the ground back in the days resulting from chimney fires. Without diving directly into the specifics of retrofitting a fireplace & chimney, it's a significant expense which serves absolutely no utility today.
During home heating upgrades, homes were retrofitted with HVAC furnaces & ducting - chimneys were used for nothing more than exhaust vents. Most buildings were converted/retrofitted from wood burning stoves/chimneys to home heating oil furnaces. During this period if the owners/occupants wished to maintain functionality of a fireplace &/or wood burning stoves, a chimney liner would have been required. By this time chimneys & fireplaces were nearing their life expectancy as the mortar & brick began to crumble away rendering them non-functional &/or extremely costly to maintain.
Wood burning chimneys (for the most part) became mere warm/cozy places to drink hot chocolate & splay your girlfriend in the front of the fire. Wood burning stoves gone, fireplaces/chimneys crumbling & the advent of HVAC furnaces & duct work found far less utility as a building heating source.
I had to restore 3 adding liners after the fact. They put a long balloon down and pumped the liner, collapse the balloon and remove it
Jim - Exactly how they wanted to add chimney liners to my chimneys, as well. Except, the actual fire box for the fireplace needed to be rebuilt, as well. At the time when I was making decisions the costs & determining type of new fire box for the fireplace plus chimney liners, added to the fact I was retrofitting/upgrading from home heating oil & installing completely new combination heat pump, I elected to close off both chimneys & the fireplace. Nice to see you upgraded your chimneys - I'm sure they were well worth the effort.
Chris glad you got the car out even though you ended up feeling poorly. Hope you can shake it quick. Drink heavily. Don't you have a grandson named Ollie?
Mike - Thanks for the well wishes on shaking this bug, I think it's got me for awhile though, as I'm feeling a little worse this morning but I'll survive. I don't want to dodge your question about grandson Ollie. My older daughter Taylor and her husband Mike have three kids, Ollie (7), Anna (4) and Rowan (2). We (Dawn and I) have been essentially estranged from them for about 2-years. It's a hurtful family drama that I don't feel comfortable talking about yet, but thanks for asking about Ollie.
I hope you have a great rest of your weekend!

Hopefully after a good night's rest you were able to shake the crud?
Norm - Really appreciate you asking, but nope, worse this morning. Bad night's sleep, followed by major sore throat, upper chest congestion and cough this morning. Had some chills during the night but none this morning so far. No gastro issues though which I'm thankful for. I think it's just the onset of a cold, I'm well overdue for one.

I add one packet of Emergen-C to one packet (2 tablets) of Alka Seltzer. Works great. I do this routine for several days when fighting a sinus/cold (Rhinovirus) infection.

Thanks Norm, I actually remembered your magic elixir from prior posts, but thanks for bringing it back up. I asked Dawn last night if we had either in the medicine cabinet, she said we didn't. I may try to get out later today and get some. It's a little more of a PIA to get out to Dollar General right now with the main road still closed, but if I want some I'd better get out today because it's been raining steady all morning and is supposed to continue throughout the day and tomorrow, and there's a decent chance the back way out could flood tomorrow and be impassable.
Chris I'm sorry to hear that. No explanation needed. May the Good Lord smile upon your family and bring you back together.
Hi everyone.
It rained in the night but it's nice out now. Don't think I should run electrical appliances in the yard so I'll just cut things down. Got a new chain for the Husky (husqy?) so I need to test it out. Did Walmart this morning after sleeping until 10. Told Mom I wanted to work a little later this evening since I don't have to get up in the morning, so she'll have dinner ready probably after 6. We're having Arby's sandwiches that we picked up after WM so they can be heated up anytime.
So tell me this. Would you consider motor oil to be flammable? I think I mentioned I want to set up a "still" to settle out used motor oil to run in my diesel Suburban. I looked at a drill-operated transfer pump to get used oil out of several drums that I have, and this pump I saw at Lowes says great for blah blah blah and motor oil. Then right under that it says, don't use on flammable liquids. Huh? They have a hand crank pump they only sell online, it is designed for 55 gallon drums. Either would suit me, just thought that seemed odd.
Okay gonna go cut stuff up for a little while. Wonder who won the race. I haven't watched the Indy 500 in years. I'll look it up. Have a great afternoon everyone. Chris make yourself a toddy.
Mike - Absolutely motor oil is flammable; yet not nearly as flammable as other petroleum products. Motor oil has a very high flashpoint (temperature required to ignite). OSHA doesn't consider motor oil flammable because of its very high flashpoint. Therefore, while it may sound I'm being persnickety, well I am. It's flammable but NOT under normal operating/usage conditions; albeit, I think that's the reason they consider motor oil to not be a flammable liquid. I mean if you put the **** in your oven it will definitely ignite/combust & burn (somewhere between 300°F - 400°F). Will it burn? Yeah, at the temps I just indicated - will it continue to burn lower than 300°F - no. So, if a spark were to supply enough heat to "ignite" the motor oil, the motor oil could not sustain a burn if it falls below 300°F.
Norm - Never did get out to get the drugs, but I tried something else that often works for me when it's only just a cold. I went ahead and attempted my normal 40-minute cardio workout. Not as much energy as I usually put into it, but I got thru it, and feel better for it. I think all the extemely heavy breathing helps clear alot of the crap out. Less coughing and less congestion right now, we'll see how my body reacts later, but I feel better than I have all day.
Not really feeling any better or worse this morning, just blah. It's just a cold so I'll just keep on keepin on and it will run it's course.
Maggie's b-day today, she's 7. Of course she'll get some treats and presents later. My youngest daughter Blaire's b-day is tomorrow, she'll be 31. I'll run her card/present over to her tomorrow sometime after she's home from work. They're away for the long weekend down to the family cabin on the Current River near Doniphan, MO.
No plans for us today. Hope everyone has a safe and relaxing day.

Gloomy around here, it rained pretty hard last night, but not anything today. I heard it's supposed to rain all week. Yick.
Went to the Awful house for lunch. Stayed about an hour longer than I had planned. Jesse was there. Jesse is a nice old fellow who starts talking and doesn't come up for air. By the time you pull yourself away you know Jesse's whole history. And that of his family, friends, his time in college, his cousins, etc.
Chris you just have to decide not to be sick anymore. When I catch a bug I'll lay around feeling sorry for myself, but after a couple days that gets boring and I say, okay I'm not sick anymore. It usually works. I'm very convincing.
Went downstairs this morning and cleaned up a little. The oil that spilled out of the engine sitting on the floor got cleaned up with cat litter. It left kind of a slick stain so I put down fresh cat litter and ground it into the floor with my foot. Did an okay job, but I'd like to do better. My friend suggested Simple Green. Here's a question. It's a concrete floor, what if I polished it? What about an epoxy coating? Would either of those help with the floor cleaning at all? Any other suggestions?
Short week for work. It was nice being off today, wish I could have gotten more done. That's okay, just not being at work is worth the price of admission.
Time to head over to Mom's. Hope everyone has a good day.
Tornadoes w/ huge hail pummeling Lubbock, TX - they said some hail was 6". Holy Snotrockets.
Very peculiar/odd weather here today. A front moving through but wind is directly out of the North @ 20mph - very chilly outdoors ~60°F. Odd for this time of year.
Mike - The best thing I've found for removing concrete saturated w/ oil is gasoline w/ plenty of rags. Gasoline penetrates the concrete nicely & absorbs the oil. You can then follow-up w/ Simple Green.
Likely a >50% chance I've located the Indian issue. Getting ready to actually pull the entire starter I began removing (+) cables/terminals from some "device". Well, that device basically crumbled in my hands whilst removing the nuts holding the (+) cables/terminals. Turns out it is a 12V 40A automatic circuit breaker laden with corrosion inside & fasteners rusted & corroded. Since it's a power feed direct from the BATT > starter I'd say there's a good chance of being the issue. We'll see it plays out - delivery sometime next week.
Went to my first car show of the year yesterday with my buddy. 43° at 8:30 in the a.m., warmed up to a staggering 61°. I had a long sleeve pull over on for the first couple of hours, which came off later, nevertheless I ended up with a pretty good sunburn. Now I'm no Ralph Nixon, but I did score a door prize, a canvas folding chair. Chris thanks for posting the pics from your show. yesterday was the first time probably in twenty years that I took no photos at a show, and Chris, get over your illness. All registered for Homecoming, gotta do a light cleaning of the 'vert. Ordered some underhood, and trunk decals from Fusick's.

Mike - Agree, that's why I said I just need to keep on keepin on,, and let it run it's course. It hasn't slowed me up any today..
Best thing I've found for oil stains is liquid Dawn dish detergent. Smear it full strength over the spill area, scrub it in with a stiff bristle brush, then let it sit on there for a couple hours. Wipe up the excess Dawn with paper towel before shooting water at it or you'll have more soap bubbles than you want to deal with. Then rinse thoroughly. Good luck.

Norm - Glad you've got a good idea on the source of the trouble,, good luck!

Dan - I'm really happy for you that you have a car again that you can get out and enjoy! 👍 You're very welcome for the pics, and thanks for the well wishes, I think I'm feeling better already.
I like the McCall song Convoy. The Kristofferson movie it inspired is not very awesome.
Interesting on the sideways opening awning windows. My place had bottom casements on the front big windows, I replaced them with solid glass the whole way down; I can open 9 double hungs and a sliding glass door (if my porch screen were good) to ventilate the place, so I did not think I needed them or do I now still. My place has a lined chimney, but the double sided fireplace is a great place, to, quoting the master, "splay your girlfriend," but it shoots most of the heat up the chimney, especially since it's a side-only heatilator.
I regret you are ill, Chris. I spent a night on a bad bed and now have two days of back ache. Looks like the Stormin Norman rides again.
Dogs are interesting, you can really bond with some of them.
Oil will burn like said. I use it for getting trash fires going of yard trash.
Mike, a Spaniard, Panou, I think, won. He was very overwhelmed with the moment.
Gasoline is excellent for oil removal. I will very carefully treat my garage stalls here when I sell this house.
Dan, I am glad you won a chair. I won a chair at a 5 car car show a couple years ago where my van took Best Ford. If you know my van, that's a stretch.
My mom came up to my (recently departed) aunt's house and is staying a week. My sister came up to my place and we went to see Mom for a couple days. We had a meal where we had 1 cousin and spouse, a cousin and step kid, an uncle and wife, all come so we had a good meal. They insist I grill. It's just brats and hotdogs and hamburgers, and they want foil down on the grate, so it's basic basic grilling, just don't char anything. Watched some of the race. The Legion came by, one of 13 stops, and did a ceremony across the street at the cemetery, prayer, 3 gun salute, taps. It was well done. Came home and sister left this AM. I usually have a full bottle of Jack Daniels amongst my liquor and this is the second time that I though a couple drinks ended up with a 750ml killed all but the plausible deniability "I didn't drink it ALL" one shot left in the bottom. Plus she drank almost a whole bottle of wine in the day in between. My hard alcohol drinking is a double, once, and rarely. Or a beer or two. It takes me 6 months or more to kill a 750. Alcohol tolerance is amazing; I get hangover headaches that could well become migraines the day after a couple drinks.
Chris - How you doing? You shake the Rhinovirus infection?

Boy I'm just not feeling it this morning. Tiger wanted to go out at 130 this morning, so I thought fine I'll have a little more than an hour to sleep when we come back in. I think I fell asleep about a minute before I had to get up.
Norm it's been raining for the most part for days. And it is going to rain for days. There was some pretty severe weather yesterday afternoon on the other highway but we just got rain.
Got a couple things I can do inside this afternoon. I put stuff off saying I don't want to work inside when it's nice out. So today will be the perfect day to do those things.
Time to get serious. Wheels are slow to come in. I'd probably go into tilt mode if a lot came at once. Hope everyone has a good day.
We are finally getting some of the wet stuff. Light>Moderate rain showers last night. We've been in a drought for too long. Nice to see things greening up.
Norm - Thanks for asking. No, unfortunately it's got me pretty good. I'm hoping I turn the corner soon.
Chris - That's plenty unfortunate. Most will accept your conditions/symptoms as the common cold - which is most likely (hopefully) what you have. None-the-less, there's primarily one significant symptom which requires monitoring to eliminate a more serious infection & that is fever. Adults generally don't display any significant fever w/ the common cold (while children often do). If they do it's below 102°F. I'd monitor any fever you may have developed. Anything >103°F is serious cause for concern.
It wasn't too long ago we saw our buddy Jim catch Legionella (Legionaries Disease). Chance you may have a Pontiac fever. But, since you own an Oldsmobile it's doubtful.
Hope it clears soon - monitor fever if you have one.
Despite an uncomfortable night last night, I'm hoping I've turned a corner with my cold.
I'm hoping to go to 2 Judged Shows this weekend and my car really needed a deep detailing. Got out to the garage at 10am and quit at 3pm. Did the interior first, using 303 Aerospace Protectant on the dash pad, door panels, and seats. Then I vacuumed the interior and dusted a few other areas like the front of the dash. Then I cleaned the vinyl top and treated with the 303 again. Then I cleaned the windows. Finally I cleaned/detailed all the painted body panels, hood, and trunk lid with Meguiar's Gold Class detailing spray. What do I have left? I need to polish the chrome on the bumpers, wheels, valve covers, and air cleaner. I need to do some spot detailing under the hood. I need to treat the tires with "tire black". Certainly no where near as much as what I got done today. Hoping to get done tomorrow.
After finishing up with car stuff for the day, I did my lifting workout before dinner. Kinda proud of myself that I have not missed a workout since I started feeling poorly.
Hope everyone has had a good day and has a relaxing evening!
Chris, you missed a spot. I was going to order three cans of Underhood black from Eastwood, but at 24 bucks for a 11oz. can of aerosol, and 15 bucks shipping, I decided that I didn't need to spend $90 with them. So, I'll be looking at some Krylon semi gloss black locally.
