Alright, let’s hear about driving the Jeep, driving the VC and the number of flattened squirrels.

To my left is John ( from the big easy) and his better half. They also have a home in the mountains and love fried chicken . He is a recovering " Good morning " thread friend

Drove the jeep around the neighborhood, drove the vista to Dillard

Great to meet Mike's mother. Class act ( as you would expect, )

Jeep safe and sound in the mountains

Happy Sunday to you all.

Thanks Jamesbo that's nice of you to say. At first Mom didn't want to go with because she thought she'd be intruding on my time with my friends. I'm glad she came along, we really had a nice day.

It's nice out this morning, and should warm up. Got some things to do outside. I don't know if I told you I gave my Volkswagen to a friend of mine. I actually didn't mean to. This guy bought a house down by Macon and was lamenting on what it would cost him to drive back and forth in his diesel Silverado. He said he needed to get something easier on gas, like that VW. I said heck you can have it. The story on that car is I bought it from a guy who simply was flipping it, gave me a bad title(I don't think he knew it was bad) and I couldn't do anything with it, and it's just set in the driveway for years. I actually was being flip when I said he could have it and didn't think he'd actually take it. I paid a lot of money for it because it was that nice, but he'll have more into it than it's worth when he finally gets it running. Anyway I thought the subject had run its course and I forgot about it until the other day he said he bought 400$ worth of parts for it and when can he come get it. It peeves me a little that he'd actually take it, this guy will take anything that's free and if you have something he likes he will needle his way into borrowing it or using it with you(like my tractor). But, I said he could have it so this afternoon we're going to pull it out of the mud and get it up on his trailer. Eh, I couldn't do anything with it.

Shopping today, messing with the VW, and that will probably be it. I think this is the last week of April. Holy Toledo. See ya.

I've hunted squirrels the majority of my life - some people hate them, most likely because they consider them tree rats. I make Mulligan's Stew w/ them. The one item I always add to any recipe I use to make any type of stew are diced Rutabaga. IMO, it isn't a stew unless it has Rutabaga.

I looked at a couple recipes (online), this one comes about as close to the one I use.

We hunted squirrels all the time close to our house. Dad would not let us hunt anything that was not going to be eaten. Those of you who have killed, skinned, and gutted a squirrel know there's not much meat on those critters. My Dad would skin and gut them, then parboil the carcass to cook/tenderize. Then he would strip off the meat, and dice the larger pieces taken off the hind legs. He would then fry the meat with spices (mainly just salt and pepper I think) and then create a white gravy. We would then eat the squirrel gravy over biscuits or Rusk toast. It has been 40-years now since I've had any prepared like that, but I remember it being good.

Well the -wagen is -wagone. I'm beat to death trying to load that guy onto a trailer that shouldn't haul cars. Yes I did most of the work, because the other guy is old and I didn't want him having a stroke on my driveway. He thinks he's a crack mechanic, he's a hack. I think he's met his match with this one.

Dan I was smiling.

No early work tomorrow but probably the rest of the week. Gonna hit the sack soon.

This morning when I was leaving for the Awful house I noticed that the ridge vent on my house was all torn off and flapping in the breeze. Must have happened last week when we had all that wind, but I just noticed it today. So that means a call to my friendly insurance guy tomorrow. Rain Tuesday...

Hm, so now there's an extra space in the yard. Whatever could I fill it with?

Okay have a good night.

Good afternoon guys,

Norm - Very nice round pardner!

Nice sunny day today, although cool, I think it only got up to about 67°. Good day to mow the lawn, which I did this afternoon. My wife's sick with an upper respiratory infection. Took her to Urgent Care yesterday and all they did was take a chest x-ray and give her a Prednisone shot, no antibiotics, even though her snot is green and she's running a low grade fever. They did call in a prescription for Flonase (which you can get over the counter), and an Albuterol inhaler, which I picked up from the pharmacy this morning. She called her regular doctor this morning and he called her in an antibiotic (Z-pack), which I had to pick up this afternoon. Between doing my workout this morning, 2 trips to the pharmacy, and mowing and trimming the lawn, I've had a full day. I'm ready for some downtime.

Hope everyone had a great day and has a relaxing evening!

Aloha

The pressure is off, Monday is over. Slow day at work, we missed the mark by a bunch and left a little early. That's because the lead wasn't there. I expect more of the same tomorrow.

Went to Summit tonight. Two Oldsmobiles, a green 68 Cutlass convertible and a G Body hooptie. Nothing much to write home about. I had left Tiger with my Mom so I was going past my house to get Tiger and saw all sorts of police car lights and fire trucks just off of the runway. A plane hit some power lines as it left the runway and ended up in a front yard, tail just barely sticking out over the pavement. Georgia Power was out putting the lines back up. I saw a couple of my neighbors watching it all from their golf cart so I talked with them until the street was opened. It was an instructor and a student, not sure what they were trying to execute, a go-round or a touch and go, but one of them needed stitches in the forehead and the other one was fine. They both I'm sure needed new drawers.

No overtime tomorrow since it's 10pm and I'm wasting time here instead of sleeping. I don't care. Few people come in anymore it really doesn't make any difference. I figured out two hours of overtime is about 56 bucks extra take home. Stop the presses.

Peace

Good morning guys,

It got just plain COLD last night and is only 36° right now at 0715. Supposed to be full sunshine and get up to only around 62° for a high,, about 10° lower than where we should be this time of year..

Going to start in on cleaning/detailing the 4-4-2 this morning, hoping the weather will cooperate for a show on Saturday. It's not looking promising for Saturday right now with the weatherman forecasting an 80% chance of rain.

No other big plans for today. Hoping now that my wife has some antibiotics and other meds that she starts feeling a little better today. Everyone in this neck of the woods that suffers from seasonal allergies, myself included, is really suffering right now. My truck is green with pollen every morning, and the mold count has been really high because of all the rain we've gotten lately. Hope everyone has a great day!

Mike - They may have been demonstrating a 'short field takeoff' - it's part of routine/standard training to secure a PPL. Very lucky to have walked away from that one. A short field takeoff is the ability to lift off above a 50' obstacle at the end of the runway.

Jim - Possible, may have been one or several factors - failure to establish Vx and maintain Vx, improperly configured aircraft, wind speed shifted from headwind to tailwind or failure to account for tailwind pushing aircraft further down runway at liftoff, short between the headset’s (common one - LOL).

From what I've heard since, they were executing a missed approach, and didn't have enough power to climb out. Why that was the case I have no clue. I also don't know if it was a real missed approach or the instructor told the student to go around. Ah, but it will all come out. This is the third accident at that airport since I've been there, late 2014, and my neighbor said the 4th in 20 years.

Work is slow. Almost lunch.

I think just a couple actually have their planes at their houses. There's a T hangar by the runway and several people keep their planes tied down there. I'd say maybe half a dozen people in the neighborhood fly.

Power lines can be difficult to see from the cockpit. In my experience only a few places around airports have these marked with colored *****. If you are not familiar with the airport layout and local hazards, pilots can blunder right into them. The same is true of the guy wires associated with towers. You can see the lights and strobes on the towers, but the associated cone of guy wires is very difficult to spot until it is too late.

For practice and real instrument approaches, there may be published standard instrument departure procedures ("SIDS") to be used in the absence of differing controller instructions. So, if you are shooting an instrument approach to runway 5 (50/230 degrees oriented) and there are power lines off the departure end, the SID might say for the missed approach, " Immediate right climbing turn to a heading of 090 degrees, up to 2500 feet, then direct to the RDU VOR."

Jim - The news is reporting it as a stall - evidently reiterating what the FAA said. FAA most likely spoke w/ both the instructor & the student...
Well, the new agency said the pilot had a passenger on board....who knows. Maybe not an instructor & student.

So often the sequence of events is they:
1- do not have enough altitude;
2--see power lines too late;
3- instinctively pull up the nose too much in an attempt to climb over them;
4- aerodynamically stall the flying surfaces; and
5--hit the lines in the stall.

The instructor bears responsibility for this and they are lucky to be alive. If they had struck the power lines in cruise, as opposed to being in a stall, they very likely would not be speaking to anyone ever again.

Awesome pic Norm! My understanding is they only live 7 to 10-days, and are primarily active at night, hence the name Luna Moth.

Well the morning is gone. Spent 3-hours cleaning/detailing the 4-4-2. I usually start on the top and work my way down . . . just like . . . well you know. I got the vinyl top cleaned and conditioned. Cleaned and waxed all the painted surfaces and stainless trim. Got the bumpers, engine bay, wheels, and interior to do yet. Really not much to do on the interior except a light dusting, vacuum, and conditioning my dash pad. One part I don't enjoy doing are the wheels, I have to sit on the floor to do those, too much of a chance of throwing my back out bending over that much. The engine bay can be a pain in the **** too, getting dust/dirt out of nooks and crannies, but what the hell, it gives me something to do, I enjoy it.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Kenneth - I wasn't bitchin, just stating it was out of the norm, and it was certainly nice for the car work I was doing in the garage. I certainly would not trade it for what you have to put up with. All the sunshine is great out there, but what good is sunshine if it's too hot to be outside to enjoy it. I'd have to move to a more moderate climate. If it's too hot to be outside enjoying my motorcycles, car, and whatever else in the summer, I'd definitely have to move. I feel for ya brother!

Well I'm home. "Whomever" is disassembling that airplane in place, and the cops have the whole road blocked. Took me 25 minutes to go around. I appreciate the work the cops do and what they have to put up with, however around here they are the most inept at traffic control as I've ever seen. I believe they just can't be bothered so they close the whole road and then go sit in their cars.

Anyway work was slow all day. The lead will be out all week so the shenanigans have started ramping up. The less than professional guys are slacking off, more than one has suddenly had an appointment of some sort and had to leave early, so two days in a row we missed the mark. Some guys were staying over to do 35 wheels. I was not one of those guys.

Cloudy here and a bit cool. It's supposed to clear up and be warm the rest of the week. Not Kenneth warm but nice. I've been slow to get into the mowing mode and everything needs to be mowed. I hope I can get with it this week.

So TriCarb those lines do have an orange ball on them, I never knew that's what that was for. It will be interesting to read the report when it comes out. I hope those guys don't get in trouble. Sure they screwed up a lot of stuff for everyone but I'm sure they didn't do it on purpose.

Guess I'll find something to do. Doesn't look like I'm going to Mom's today, I don't want another half hour detour, twice, hard telling how long it will take them. It's not like they couldn't have towed it 100 feet to an airport or anything.

Mike - NTSB/FAA most likely want to maintain configuration of the aircraft as it came to rest following the incident; moving the aircraft could/might alter some investigative data. Additionally, it provides something (additional) for you to bitch about.

Here are some pictures of the Appleseed I helped run this past weekend at my local range. Very warm, windy, and the young boys were a handful. Got it done; a little sunburned.

In case of interest, appleseedinfo.org. It's a shooting class that teaches Patriots Day American Revolution history. We teach fundamental loop sling style shooting, bring people up from no real skill to shooting our qualifier, and we teach them about the battles of Lexington, Concord, and Menotomy on April 19, 1775 in our breaks and lunch time.
