4 speed dual gate in 72 442

has anyone who changed to a 200r4 transmission fitted their car with the 4 speed automatic dual gate shifter, or did they go with the original shifter modified to work with the 200r4 ??
??

A member of our chapter used the Shiftworks kit on a factory dual gate in a 1972 Supreme convertible with a 200-4R. Let's just say that this particular kit is not optimum. The problem is that you are stuck with the physical design of the original dual gate shifter. To get four speeds, OD (fourth) ends up in the former Neutral position, and Neutral, Reverse, and Park are all crammed into the remaining space between R and P. The resulting shifter doesn't really have a great feel, in my opinion.

What I'm saying is that the Shiftworks kit to convert the factory three speed dual gate to work with a four speed is pretty sketchy, in my opinion. The Hurst aftermarket four speed dual gate was designed for the F-body console and requires a lot of work to put it into a 70-72 console; it probably requires a custom-machined top plate. Of course, those four speed dual gate shifters are long out of production, so the ones that come up for sale have stupid-money prices (like $599 the last time I saw one on ebay). Your call.

I have no idea of your fabrication skills or wallet size. It's a better shifter, that's for sure.

We have a member here who makes a detent plate that will convert a regular 3 speed shifter to a 4 speed "slap shifter". Then you can use the ShiftWorks 4 speed conversion bezel to make it look like a factory 4 speed setup.

I briefly outlined some points in this thread regarding the OD Dual Gate. If any questions, I can try to test my goldfish memory capacity in hopes of helping. Perfectly happy to pull up trim plates if you need pics.
