79 HO 3 speed dual gate to 4 speed dual gate conversion
Before
Install complete
I removed the shifter plate (among other things) from a 4 speed dual gate shifter for an 80's Fbody and transplanted it onto a 79 HO 3 speed dual gate shifter. I cut down the Fbody 4 speed top plate so it inlays in the HO top plate.
Turned out quite nice. Almost OEM looking lol
I Have a little cleanup to do yet but for the most part its done.
Top plate cleaned up and ready to go

The 4 speed fuctions the same as the 3 speed does, just has an extra gate for 4th.
this particular one (I have enough parts to make 2 more) is going in my 85 cutlass salon. 350 Olds with a 200R4 trans.

Thanks Joe.
i picked 2 fbody shifter up a long time ago for a premium price. I guy on ebay has them for $500 now while the parts supply lasts.
this should be able to be done on the late 60's and early 70 shifters, the main shifter frame is the same and the 4 speed gate should bolt in like this one did.

A friend of mine installed the Shiftworks kit in his three speed dual gate in a 72 Cutlass. That is a very unsatisfactory solution. The kit does not change the top plate or gate. OD ends up in the former neutral position and neutral and reverse are crammed into the space between that and park. I was underwhelmed. Yours is the right way to do it. I had previously seen a similar conversion at the Pismo Beach show several years ago.

I have a 4 spd DG in my ‘70, takes some work to make it mount properly & play nice w/ console but worth it. IIRC I ended up using the Shiftworks cable. I have a 70 top plate/lens on it. Kid’s red car has 200-4R w/ “normal” 3 spd DG, 70 top plate/lens & shiftworks cable. Cable is a bit stiff & IIRC you can’t pull it into L1 but quite usable. Shiftworks lens is useless.
