I have a 98% original and stock 1964 vista cruiser with drum brakes and 15 inch wheels. Would like to upgrade to a "plain jane" power front disc brake system. Keeping the rear brakes as they are-totally stock. Not interested in drop spindles or suspension mods. Not going to drive it over 65. Any recommended kits?

 

A rebuilt and optimized factory drum setup is often superior to aftermarket discs done on the cheap.

 

I don't know if they offered OE discs in 64 on the Cutlass, or if later model kits will work. If so, using OE parts would be the way to go.

 

No, not until '67 and then it would be the complex 4-piston caliper system. I would go with a '69 or later single-piston setup.

But first, I would ask myself some hard questions about my intended use for the car. OP states that it won't see over 65 MPH, which tells me that the factory drums would be just fine as long as they are in good working order.

 

The 1969-72 factory single piston caliper disc setup bolts to any 1964-72 A-body car. Use those. Note that if you are reusing the steering arms, the early cars used smaller bolts holding the steering arm to the spindle, so you will need to open those holes up. Original 1964 wheels will not clear the factory brakes. You need disc brake wheels, as used on the 67-up cars. Yes, 14" are available.
