I’ve posted this problem before but I’m hoping for some new input. The steering on my ‘55 Super 88 is pretty loose. Two to three inch movement of the steering wheel with no associated moving of the tires is pretty much the norm. It wanders when driving around town at slower speeds but improves at highway speeds. I’ve made adjustments to the screw on the top of the steering gear box, both tighter and loosed with little change. So, I’ve been looking into buying a new or remanufactured gearbox. I’m finding them at well over $1000.
1. The part number I’m using is 82-00278NQ4. Is that the right number?
2. While surfing the internet, I found the company BAP (Buy Auto Parts). They are offering that part number for $348. Anybody have any info or experience with this company?
As always, thank you in advance for your advice.
As far as I know, I do have the stock part on my car. I was going off the part number I found online. I should have known that it was too inexpensive a part for the fancy cars we own.
I would have the steering gear rebuilt professionally. Here's a well rated company (at least well rated on the Ford truck website I frequent). I'm sure someone here on CO can recommend a rebuild service for your power steering gear.
