floor shifter sloppy

My 62 automatic floor shifter is very sloppy. The guy I just bought this from says to start in L, then shift to drive. Reading online about S meaning super not second in Pontiacs only. So then why did Olds install this besides to confuse the customer, and also if I am to understand that there are only 5 indents Park Neutral Drive Low, then Reverse. Because that would explain a little bit of the slop from low to drive. Any thoughts?

Sorry, but I don't understand your question. The Rotohydramatic 5 trans used in the 61-63 F-85 is a three speed automatic with a "first and a half" gear that really just changes the torque multiplication of the internal fluid coupling (the Accel-A-Rotor). The shifter detents are P-N-D-S-L-R. What exactly does "loose" mean?

Note that the RH5 uses a throttle valve linkage instead of a vacuum modulator (just like the throttle valve cable on a 200-4R or 700R4 trans). The throttle valve serves both to regulate upshifts based on load and to control passing gear downshifts. The trans is VERY sensitive to TV rod adjustment.

The RH5 is not one of GM's better automatics. Upshifts are soggy. Downshifts can be late, especially if the TV rod is not adjusted properly. I have replaced my 4GC carb with an E-brock, and had to make throttle and TV linkages myself. The TV linkage adjustment is thus trial-and-error for me, and it still isn't quite right. I don't need to shift into L normally, but sometimes I do, mainly if I don't slow down enough for the trans to downshift on it's own at an intersection, for example.

I meant the shiter itself. It does not stay in place when trying to shift in low or drive. I understand being able to shift up from low to drive w/o having to push the button down, but it does not feel like it locks in place...

In that case, it sounds like the detent spring in the shifter is broken or missing.
