Floor shifter is sloppy

On my 72 Cutlass supreme when I shift it feels like there is 1/2" or more of play in the shifter so I can not get to Low 2 .
It is hard to explain but when I cycle through the shifts parked in the garage I go to Reverse , N, D and Low 1 then I am out of room and cant go into Low 2
It shifts nice into reverse and foward so I think it is the cable or brackets that is the problem.
I have a 1970 shifter on the 72 , could this be a problem ?

Is there supposed to be a bushing where the shifter cable hooks up to the trans bracket.(the cable is kind of sloppy at that point and there is a bolt and cotter pin holding it on) If anyone has a pic of the area where the floor shift cable hooks up at a th400 I would really appreciate it.

How sloppy is it? If quite a bit that can be an issue.
Make your own temporary bushing with a strip cut from a beer can, soda bottle, whatever, and see if that helps. If so, then try to locate a suitable bushing or make one of a more durable material. Copper sheet can be had at many HW stores...

Thanks Rob , the spot where the cable hooks up to the trans bracket has a rectangular hole so the bolt slides back and forth in it about 1/2 " I should just ditch the cotter pin and do a regular bolt and nut and tighten up the end of the cable and see if that works.
