Edelbrock Pro-Flo: What's so special?

http://www.summitracing.com/oh/parts/edl-1002/overview/

I've seen these things installed on several cars at car shows. Last time I was at Summit, I remember seeing a sign below one that advertised something about "100cfm". I'm curious: is there much of a performance gain from these? I mean, they look weird. But I was considering it because I need a new air cleaner. Thanks for the help!

Nothing. There are better air filters, the adapter must inhibit flow. Be careful of carb back fires with a foam filter. I burnt mine when I had it, supposedly others have had it catch fire.

I had a pro flo and It caught fire lol albeit it was a huge back fire and the foam may or may not have soaked up starter fluid lol . Im a big fan of the filter tops like the k&n kit or the summit brand kit. They are re usable and look great.

Those are junk, don't buy one. The foam will deteriorate and fall into your carb. I don't even know why they still sell them.

I really love the fact that I'm surrounded by such knowledgeable people. When you're 18 and still starting out with all this, it really helps. Thanks everyone!

This is the way to go if you want a flow through top.

High RPM big motors, I'm sure they help. If you have limited hood clearance and have to run a short 2" filter, a filtered top will help there for sure.

I've never seen any testing, but I would think some air flowing down from the top would help get a cleaner "signal" into the carb, rather than the air flowing from the side and making a 90* turn down into the carb. Would probably only be noticeable on a well tuned max effort combo.

You know it probably helps to some extent but I bought it because I think the chrome tops are tacky ., much like all the chrome on my engine lol. Somehow I end up with chrome stuff in trades and the kicker is it usually works so I run it lol.

I got one on my Cutlass because of hood clearance. I dont have any problems with the foam.

I have basically the same set up as copper, mine is a drop base that I to clearance for the Qjet's secondary air door. I plan on running a 1" spacer with my RPM intake and use an oval air cleaner to tuck inside my scoop, probably the expensive Edelbrock to match my valve covers. This is on the 425, so talking the future here. There are many options for compact air cleaners. You can use the Pro flow but your tune needs to be spot on.

I put a 1'' spacer under my Qjet about a month ago! It seems to changed the power curve a little. Not an extreme upgrade, of course. But still kinda cool.

Hello all, I’m new to the site. I have the old 403 and I bought an Edelbrock pro flow air filter. Do those do anything or am I better off keeping the stock air with the hose and just upgrading to a K&N 14x3” air filter? I just just want mild bolt-ons. Like maybe an Advance Curve kit, 2.5” Dual exhaust, maybe remove the cat and headers. What do you all think? I don’t want to get too crazy. What I say now, right?! Lol
TIA

The comments above are correct - the foam in those filters have a tendency to fall apart and they easily catch fire whenever there's a backfire.
You won't see any improvements from changing an air filter. You can run a K&N if you want, but I'd recommend spending money elsewhere first. Also remember that *cold* air is important. The engine can only breathe so much, so you don't need a gigantic open element.

The dual exhaust is a good first mod. Headers can be a PIA but do add power. Make a dual snorkel out of your single snorkel air cleaner, I did. I combined a 307 4bbl air cleaner with a 260 scoop as the second. It looks a lot like a factory dual snorkel with the one small and large dual snorkel. Great part about making one is cost and you can position the second snorkel exactly where you want it to clear accessories. Good luck.

Out of line,

thank you for the input. I may go with the dual exhaust first. Maybe instead of doing any mods. I may look for a 455 and swap that engine instead!

Yeah, a 455 is a good idea in full size. You can use the better W/Z manifolds and not deal with headers as well. The passenger side manifold is different on your later 403 vs earlier 330/350 manifolds and 455 W/Z manifolds which all the direct down pipes are made for. Good luck.

Thanx, I have so many ideas and not enough money and time. All in that order lol.

stupid question what is the w/z? Learning terminology. It’s definitely different working on my little Honda Civic. Lol

Our family got our first Olds powered car in 1986, a 75 Cutlass 4 door with an Olds 350. I started working on on our 81 Delta 88 4 dr with an Olds 307 at 16 yrs old a few years after we got it in 1990. You will find many others here with a lifelong love of the Oldsmobile V8 and these cars. These are the larger and divided W/Z manifolds that only fit the 400 through 455 BBO.
