1985 442 air filter..

What is the best way to clean the inner filter on the 307 HO, and what is it made of? I have never come across one that you cannot remove! I have air filter cleaning kit from K&N...do I use the cleaner and the oil on these filters?

Thanks,
Ted

That's not an air filter! You'll note that it's shorter than the real air filter, and the lid does not seal to it.

It is in fact an absorbent charcoal filter which captures gasoline vapors as they evaporate from the carb vents once the car is parked. When you start it up again, what little air flows through the charcoal extracts the vapors slowly so they can be burned. It's a pollution-control device and causes no decrease in performance. There's also no need to clean or replace it.

I'm betting it does decrease performance by restricting the flow of incoming air. How much? Probably not a whole heck of alot but it certainly ain't helping. I carefully pried mine out and never looked back!
