Cutlass 71 engine rebuild

Hello Guys,

Finally my 71 Cutlass Supreme's engine is being rebulit. Among others I am thinking of a new camshaft to gain some more HP. (I have Edelbrock carb) Could you advise me some shops, where should I it by from? (Most parts probably will be ordered from rockauto).

Thanks a lot
Balage

If you tell us exactly what cam you want to get, I'm sure someone would be able to provide you with some good choices.

Need to know what other pieces you'll be using, pistons, intake, headers?, rear gear, tranny, desired performance etc.

Hm, allright. Everything is stock (350 with 3speed aut.trans).

How about some good shop names to look around first?

OK, how about Rocket Racing, BTR Performance, or cutlassefi who just posted here. A quick search on the internet would bring up plenty of others too.

Avoid Monello Performance Products at all costs. There are a couple of others that I personally don't like or would do buisiness with, but I'd rather not name names. I've never heard a bad thing about BTR, so you might want to start there.

Use someone familiar with Oldsmobile engines. Cutlassefi, BTR, Rocket Racing and others will be glad to assist. I would also recommend you purchase your cam, lifters, etc from the person that provides the advice!

Engine and th350 rebuilt. Runs smooth, but i have no kickdown. The carburetor (edelbrock 6xx) has no bracket for it, so i could not connect the kickdown cable. The car accelerates in 3th gear no matter how fast and deep i press the pedal. Interesting, but previously (before the restoration) the th350 was changing back when i suddenly pressed the pedal without this cable connected to the carb! (dont know if it matters or not, but some vacuum pipes were in wrong place...)

I'll post pictures later, to demonstrate what i am talking about.

Oldsmobiles with a TH350 had the kickdown cable attached to the accelerator pedal, not the carb linkage (that's a chevy thing).

If they continue to rip people off the way they ripped me off, hopefully they won't stay in buisiness much longer. I know I mentioned them earlier in this thread, but that was before I found out Rocket Racing did a lousy job on my engine, charged me for work that wasn't even done, lied to me about the work that was done, and then ignore me when I tried contacting them about it. John Stolpa is a liar, a crook, and a coward. Take your buisiness elsewhere!

Rocket racing has been good to me. remember john has guys working for him. I work in the collision repair field and on of my bosses once told me. there is no such thing as a bad bodyshop just bad body man and painters. take it with a grain of salt john has been good to me and i have never had issue with him or his work.

I'm glad for you but he outright lied to me about many many things and did crap work on my engine. When he was caught, he refused to contact me because he doesn't want to accept responsibility for anything. The point is, if you know RR/John Stolpa is capable of doing crap like that to a customer, do you really want to give them your money? I certianly don't and will continue to warn others about their unethical/illegal buisiness practices, because I don't want to see anybody else have to go through all the BS I had to. Next time you talk to that lying sack of crap, feel free to tell him that.

Hey Balage,

Looks like Fun71 posted some good information for you. I was having trouble with my scanner at home... Good luck on your task.

Thanks for everyone!
I did a quick search last night in the car, and found funny things. The accelerator pedal has the cable connected! But on the other side of the firewall the cable is cut! It was hidden behind something. I also have a cable coming from the TH350 going to the carb as it is shown on my pic.
So i think i can do 2 things:
- buy a complete kickdown cable and connect
- do a console on the carb for the existing one.

Here is the linkage adjustment from the 72 Service Manual, which I think is the same. So where did my attachment go? I'll try again.

Correction:
SOME Oldsmobiles with a TH350 had the kickdown cable attached to the accelerator pedal, not the carb linkage, as seen in the pedal photo nearby.

I think it was 68? 69-72 that used this system.

The CABLE is hard to find mainly because it is ignored by the Parts Manual writers. You have to have a GOOD counter man to find it. When I finally found one I recorded all the info I could in the PN database:

Advance Auto PN
4210

"CABLE, downshift or detent, 69-72 F85 TH350.
Cable runs to FIREWALL and GAS PEDAL
Also on box:
015-3841-6,
91-32-107254414,
SKU=3925188,
Barcode 51784
Crossovers: CA-1950, Y-104 [Made in Israel]

Google on that SKU leads to lots of places including
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...46471029,d.aWc

and

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...ent-cable.html

Wherein a clever feller called Octania sets forth similar information.
