1972 cutlass

Hi new to the site. I got this great 72 cutlass four years ago. It wouldn't start last weekend. Up until now I've just been enjoying driving my car. Now it's time to give it some slight upgrades and hopefully it can be out on the street soon. I found most of the build sheet under the back seat.

Welcome to CO. Make sure the file size for the picture is within limits, You may have to take another or modify the file size to get it to upload.

Thanks for looking. Is there anything interesting on the sheet? I am wanting to know more about the original color.

Welcome to the site! Good looking car. I believe the trim tag under the hood, between the brake booster and windshield will help key out the original color of your car, vinyl roof and interior colors too. If you can take a picture of that someone here can key it out for you. John

Not really sure what my plans are just yet. I really need to work out a budget and think reasonably! It needs to bored, was thinking about a different intake, and headers. The exhaust is in really good shape but probably need dual. I've sent out the carb to be rebuilt. The heads are being done too. Alot at this moment is up in the air.

An a4 intake??

OK i'm trying to find an A4 intake for my rebuild... But i'm having some trouble locating one to even price... From what I've read it doesn't have any more air flow but its lighter weight and i might be more likely to match an alum intake i think... Any advice would be appreciated.. Of course everything is going really slow with my project.. Thats ok.. Also i tore all the carpet out, it really was nasty and just falling apart.. Its nicer just bare metal.. Plus i had just read lady72nrob71's great thread and got a little inspired.. Got some clear por 15, dynamat, and new carpet on the way. I do flooring and am planning some special touches with the padding.

I wouldn't put an A4 on a 72. It's an EGR thing and it just doesn't belong. I know you can block it off, but meh. There are no performance gains and I just don't see it.

I'll disagree. Virtually all of the aftermarket aluminum intakes also have EGR provisions. There's something to be said for the weight savings, even if there is no real flow improvement. There's one on Ebay right now for $45. Of course, I wouldn't spend more than $20-$25 for an A4, and you can find used Performer intakes for under $100 if you look.

I get your point Joe, but I would spring for the performer if I were looking for an aluminum SBO intake. But that's just me.

That was kind of my point, but sometimes budgets are constrained.

Hey guys Does anybody out there know where this car sold from. What dealerships or anything... Also I've been curious about which cars has the O-L-D-S-M-O-B-I-L-E across the trunk lid.. And if mine did or could.

I found the other bits of the build sheet under the carpet and they are posted below.

You can look at the inside of your trunk lid and see if yours had the letters across the back. If it did not, I would not mess with it, it will be smooth. If it did, you will see where the holes were filled.

Here is the basic rundown. I wanted to be as stock as i could stand. So i did alot of cleaning and painting the oringinal parts. Whatever was not gonna work i got a replacement, duh.
-I got forged .030 over pistons i believe from melling performance.
-An engle cam grind # JM 20/22H, so far very happy with both.
-Arp head bolts, wish i would have gotten the whole olds rebuild set of arp bolts.
-An olds seven blade fan and clutch, easily purchased from the parts wanted forum.
-An old style battery, not a good use of my money, but i really liked how it looked online!
-a Jegs brand gear reduction starter.
-Headman headers, they did not fit easily, had to shim the motor mount 1/4" and do some bending.
-Dual flow masters.

I think every thing else is stock 350.
-The quadrajet got rebuilt, carb connection Seattle. it looks good
-Piston Service did the head work. gus is the bomb!
-Perpetual Balance in Arlington hooked me up.

So far, I am still needing.
-The distributer bushings or more probable a replacement.
-New fuel/tranny lines. they work but look ugly.
-Rebuild the alternator, works but ugly
-Remove useless wires and other stereo/alarm stuff from other owners.
-probably lots more that i'm forgetting

Thanks for looking. Big thanks to ClassicOldsmoblie.com for hosting. And everybody for advice, parts, inspiration, and knowhow. Alex Auto and Anacortes Carquest. More pics later today

I believe only '71 & 72' Supremes had the letters across the rear of the trunk lid. Somebody filled the holes in on my '72, so I drilled them back out before I painted it and have some nice letters to put back in place. Chumley

Standard Motor Products P/N CV329 (or equivalent), as seen on mid-1980s Chevy pickups. Note the need for the factory connector due to the shape of the terminal on the choke coil.

Hello......Hope the new year is treating everyone well.

I went and had my car tuned up in seattle at the carb connection and it made a huge difference. but now ive been driving it more and ive noticed it is using oil. My mechanic suggested it might be the rockers. And he is prob right. I just cleaned the original ones and put them back on. Does anybody have a brand they have used? That worked well for a similar application...

Also i ended up getting a Holley rebuilt quadrajet...had some problems with my original and two replacements from summit. Summit was really helpful and returned both. Turned out it probably just needed to be tuned a little, and the carbs were most likly not the problem. My vacuum advance was way off and i need to recurve the distributor. also it was under fueled and needed bigger jets. not too hard for THEM to figure out. i spent a year AND JUST GOT MAD.

Finally, i joined a ford forum for another project car i just got for free!!! a bad *** 57 club sedan cop car. however the ford forum is not helpful... and the classicolsmoblie.com puts them to shame.. So i need some 215 75 15's but very narrow. and cheap.. This is a project just need to roll this car..

Thanks for looking and helping

Robert
