Did it spin a main bearing or a rod bearing? If a rod bearing, the rod needs to be checked / reconditioned or the new bearing will spin due to the out of round rod.

the number 8 rod bearing. I was being crazy pushing my dad's truck home and I guess my engine didn't like it and started knocking crazy.

I would do the crank kit with reconditioned rods. Is it manual trans or automatic?

automatic. I'm a little short on cash for a complete rebuild and I think that's a cheaper way out for me. Is there anything I can do about the bearing material that might be flowing in the system w/o going to the machine shop.

You could always disassemble the engine and replace the rod with one from a used engine. Of course, that's @$$uming you could find a used Olds 350 in a salvage yard. Plus, the crank might be damaged in addition to the rod. With bottom end damage there really isn't a convenient, durable and cheap way to fix it, you just have to do it the right way or expect to open the engine again soon.

Where are you located? I have a diesel you can toss the heads, intake, timing chain, cam, and timing chain cover onto and have a motor you can pull anything with...ha.
