Oldsmobile Race Cars
POST #934, third picture down, two Olds drag cars racing at the US Nationals:
The Nugget Gold car is owned and being driven by Ron Garey. He bought the car in 1974 and he told me he started racing this car in E/SA soon after. So I am guessing the picture was taken not to long after that time frame.
I bought this car from him in 1988, less the original W30 drive line that was long gone. I also bought all of his 70-72' Olds parts plus any Olds race car parts. Plus another 70' 442 W30 updated to the trim of a Cutlass S 72' model that was complete and ready to race in G/SA, equipped with a 310 HP 455. I raced the G/SA car for one year and then sold it to a guy in Miami, Fla. The G/SA ran 12:00s (on a 12:24 index) in the 1/4 and 7:70 (on a 7.95 index) in the 1/8.
The Nugget Gold car has a lot of options, A/C, pwr windows/locks, light group, SS IIs, pwr. steering/frt. disc brks., tinted windows, and W30. The car had zero rust, except for a 1/16" pin hole at the RR 1/4, at the under side of the wheel opening lip. The car has always been a Texas car. I also got the original window sticker to document it is the real deal!
I sold the car to my best "bud" who lives in Tallahassee, Fla. in 1993.
I transported the car for my friend to Bob Reeve at CarShine Restorations, located in Michigan, in 1994 for painting and for Bob to rebuild/restore the chassis also.
Currently the car is back here in Fla. and my best friend is finishing the restoration. He has located all the necessary W30 parts, although it will not be numbers matching, but will have all the correct/date coded W30 stuff. He also has acquired many, many NOS parts and is trying to not use the re-popped parts for the restoration.

In it's former glory

Pre rescue

The rescue

Quote from owner on HAMB thread
Pre rescue
The rescue
A previous owner was street racing it and obviously it was more than he could handle. Really wasn't as bad as it looked, new nose, roof and I saved the rest...Painted and running as of today...just need to put the interior in, letter it and race the bugs out...Maybe done by fall Musclepalooza. Originally piloted by Lynn Welfringer who owns Mondello Olds today. Former record holder...

Tweed only going by the pictures as thats all I know. The paint scheme is slightly different on the 1st car and I dont see the fender rocket that 66's have or the 442 emblem on the quarter as a 66 would have.

In this pic I have enlarged and sharpened it up, I can see the side mounted tack on the dash. Talking to Curt and a few others I have concluded this is very likely a W-30 that was sponsored by Olds dealers in CA. during the 66 season. It was driven by a young lady.I will find her name in the next day or so.
Some searching on the web about Paula Murphy netted this from an interview.
So in ‘64 you went to Indy and so you were doing Bonneville and Indy. When did it lead to Super Stock cars?
Murphy: In '65. I was in a ‘65 Oldsmobile that Dick Landy had driven and prepared. Then I had a ‘66 that he prepared and we ran C/Stock Automatic. We kept getting protested because he put in a 4-speed station wagon transmission in the thing and it was really supposed to be just a 3-speed. The Buicks had the 4-speed, and they just killed us all the time. Then Landy put the 4-speed in. They would say, “I can hear another shift... We can hear another shift.” But the tech people never tore the transmission out of the thing, because it looked just like a regular 3 speed.
That's classic - So you guys were touring with this car?
Murphy: No, we just ran locally in California."
The trans thing has me guessing a little.
