GAOldsman: yes, as soon as I can get my camera working. It will take a picture but cannot transfer to my computer, as I get an error message on the camera display.

GAOldsman, thanks for posting the pictures. I have trouble posting decent sized pics and end up with the little attachments that people have to open. After the MCACN show in November, I've managed to wash the car, experimented with cleaning up some bad areas on the original paint, pulled and cleaned the seats. Just cleaning it has been more involved than you'd think and its trapped in my mother-in-law's garage. Only been able to work on it on warmer days. We had a building lined up starting Feb. 1, for working on the car, but the deal fell through last week.

Dave Siltman has been an inspiration and resource for information.

I'll get around to posting some current shots of the car. But maybe should post in "Major Builds" when/if things progress. Thanks again for posting the pics.

Additional pictures from original owner & driver family

The families of Collins and Evans shared these with me. The first one is before the car even got lettered, with window sticker still in place. The second shows Gene Evans and Gene Collins. The car was sponsored by Jim Letts Oldsmobile, Atlanta.

If someone can post full sized versions from these attachments, please do.

Thanks,

El Malo Owner and Driver

The 68 442 was co-owned by Collins and Evans. However when it got wrecked, the replacement 69 belonged to Gene Collins and Driven by Gene Evans. I'm told Evans worked for Jim Letts Oldsmobile.

A little bit of info on Evans,
"In the early 1960s he entered the Army and served his military career in Army Intelligence at the Pentagon. Gene received an accommodation from President John Kennedy for discovering a security breach in the oval office."

Collins has orange shirt, Evans in yellow.

Way to go Bob!!! Great pics and, I, for one, would rather see the rejuvenation here in the race car section.

Here is a link to the 1970 NHRA rule book.
If you scroll to the stock section you will see Pete Kosts 69 442 picture
representing the sock class section.

I find it very cool that the NHRA placed a Oldsmobile in the rule book.

Kool shot , pulling the wheel on the street, back in 1970!?

That had to be a serious car to be running a transbrake back then.

More info please.

I belive that 69 is the same 69 that was at the mcacn barn finds . I don't think it was that serious I think they possibly put a bunch of wheight in the back with some air shocks possibly because it does not appear to be squatting in the rear and that car had stock rear suspension. Unless they had coil style lift bars. That's just my thinking. Plus looking at the pics of the history of the car it did not appear to have an all out race engin in its past. That is if its the correct car I'm thinking of

That D/SA is one good looking car. It had better be running middle 10s if it class competetive. Love it; that is some serious money there guys. Even more if it a REAL H/O (which would be very cool).

Thompson in Calif. is running 10:90 in his G/SA 1972 442. That's 1 second + under the index and three classes lower. I am guessing it is the 340 HP motor with some weight added to make class.

Dave B.----- I think George Thompson is running the 250/NHRA 227 HP combination with the 2.00 / 1.687 valve GA heads.------ Craig's convertible was running teens in G/SA in the late 90's. As sharp and diligent as George is I'm not surprised at all He's gotten it into the tens. --- Danny

Danny....No, on the IHRA. Wayne and I kind of figured where we wanted the car to run. I don't really want to say "NEVER", but I don't ever (isn't that close to the same thing?) want to put a rollbar or any kind of cage in my car. We are conservatively guessing 11.60s with a pretty good tune. Wayne just sent my "GOOD" 7029255 carb. to Val Hedworth, so except for re-installing everything, we should be ready to test. Wayne and Bub figure that with my headers and a good carb., 435-440 horsepower---made 419 with a crappy old set of Hedmans and one of Wayne's carbs. that really wasn't set-up for my engine. I don't know if you know that I switched to a Jerico (3:08 1st gear), and upped the rear to 4:56. On paper, we should be there. Wayne DID say that when the weather breaks we are making a road trip to Virginia to visit you and your Dad!!! I can't wait for that!!!
Now, back to the '68 H/O.....I'm friends with the current NHRA D/S record holder (67 Z/28; a real one) and he has the record at 10.44 at (I think) 125.-- That Hurst Olds has GOT to be either ON or BELOW the D/SA record. That '68 really shows well in pictures....it looks like one of those cars that is better in person!
It is VERY impressive what these guys are running today with the Stockers. Most people have no idea what it takes to do it. Time, money, money, testing, money, money, Oh yea, and a little more money. I know they are on the ragged edge on record runs, and frankly, I don't have the time, money or know how to compete in that arena.

Danny, looking back at the '68, I see the front OAI scoops are installed. Have you tried with/without them? Are they effective? Wayne and I are wondering whether or not they really add to or restrict the air flow. If you'd rather PM me the answer, I absolutely understand......I will see Wayne tomorrow and you can bet I will tell him to take a look at the latest additions to this thread.

Hey Dave----Go back to post # 1107--1108 --We're running 70/72 cars ---The Hurst belongs to David Bares From Minn. and runs in Div.5 ---I believe he said it was a clone but beautiful car either way. He's new to class racing but has been working hard on it, low to mid 11's so far. -----I would love for you guys to come down and visit , I know Pop would. ---- Also if you are interested we have a small group of class racers that rent MIR about 5 times a year. Our first is next month sometime. If you want to bring it down let me know. Works out to about 100.00 from 9-5 and sprayed to at least 330 ft.------Danny

For sure on the rental provided the car is together. We usually rent Capital, just because it is close. I got confused on the '68 H/O. For some reason I thought the time slip was for that car. I know about the '70-'72 cars, but again, I thought you were somehow connected to that '68. My mistake. Gotta run and put on some layers....4 degrees here and I'm outside for a good part of the day. BRRRRR!!!!!
