A few tidbits:
The Terry Thach car has been restored to original "as new" condition. I was parked next to the car at an invitational event within the GM Nationals.
One of the white '65s above was rumored to have been running a 425 in place of the original 400. "Supposedly", the car was protested and found to be illegal.

Does anyone know anything about the black '66 at Aquasco?

Dave----Yes that one is mine. Trac Pac car, bought it new still have it . Raced with Sonny at Capitol Raceway every weekend. Saw your car and all the others many times , even drew each other more than once, I think we were about even on outcome. OMG ! Racing since 1959-60 so I guess I got about a million. -------One quick one about this Mustang . It belonged to a fellow named Gene Collins and I was wearing him out regularly at our local track. He was constantly complaining that I was illegal and protested me a couple times . Now he was the Reining champ from the Winter Nationals held in Daytona Fla. Feb. 1966 ( old Deland air strip ) So after a season of his harassment I made my own tow bar hooked my 66 up to my 61 Olds 88 and flat towed it to from Virginia to Daytona Beach and the 1967 Winter Nationals. Can you imagine the satisfaction I got from taking him out in the third round on my way to winning the whole damn thing. ---- Still haven't wiped that smile off my face.-----------There's a bunch of pictures posted in this thread under 66 post and vistacruiser -----Danny

Really enjoyed watching the Cutlass Supreme SS/K back in the day. If I recall, you had rear wheels secured to the axle with ten lugs each wheel. Also, really enjoyed meeting your Dad. My wife still has the cast soldier he gave her on display in our china closet.

 

Hey Wayne----It was a lot of fun driving it too. It's been sitting in the corner of the garage under a cover forever who knows might blow the dust off and hammer it someday. Your wife is obviously someone special because he cast those soldiers and hand painted every one of them. He'll be 91 in April and still makes one from time to time. Hope to see you this season somewhere, love to see your 66 go down the track. Equally beautiful as it is fast------Danny

 

Danny, I never got the note, but I just PMed you with my cell #. Wayne and Aaron just finished up my new engine and I can't wait to get it all together. If you are ever in this area, we all need to get together. I just got chills (really) running down my spine while reading the story about your dad and Wayne's wife Patty. Stuff like that is what life is about.....great people doing great things for great people. Can't wait to chat and PLEASE look and see if you have some old pictures to share.

Maybe someone here can answer this question. But I noticed on a lot of cars the headers seem to wrap around the front of the engine like the brainebeau olds . Who made those ?

 

 

I tried to post a picture of Danny's Dad's soldier, but I'm afraid this ol' brain ain't up to it. I tried dragging it. I tried listing the URL (whatever that is). Nothing. I will, however, try again.

 

I think there was two companies making them at the time. One was tubular engineering . I still have 2 sets hanging in the rafters, not as fast as the new stuff but really looked cool.------ :-) Danny

 

I would love to own a set if you ever want to part ways with one. They are just coool. Although I'm too young to have enjoyed the glory days of the stock classes I love the fact it was "stock" although stock was defined diffrent per class but the fact they had to race within restrictions is what really makes it a science.

Hanging in my rafters is a nos set of hookers for the 66 67 cars with 2 inch tubes, they can give you a woodie just looking at them.

 

There was no one better with an Olds than Danny Lattimore.

 

You mention Gene Collins. My car was owned by Eugene "Gene" Collins, driven by Gene Evans. Not likely to be the same guy but I have to ask the question..... See rear quarter. Name on the door was Evans the driver.

 

I know for lots of guys running in stock classes the specs where very secretive. I posted a thread a while back wanting to know what guys did to their engines , tolerances , cams etc. Although by todays standards we have better parts knowing that info would be awesome . Specially if its for an sbo as I'm a die hard small block guy. Its very cool to have some old racers here sharing stories . Makes this already amazing thread even cooler.

Glad you chimed in Bob D. Danny might remember your car and maybe he can shed some light on it's past.
Copper, I'll tell you this about Stock class racing.....if a guy was REAL GOOD you would never figure out why. Probably cheating or found a loop hole no one else had found. Or, a guy like Danny L, or my friend Wayne S, or Sam M, would spend hours upon hours and test, test, and then test some more. The true successful Stocker guys were a combination of determination, engineering, persistence, and maybe a little luck thrown in. If you read some of the books about early Stock and Junior Stock you will see what I mean. The normal drag racer isn't in the same league as a competetive Stocker guy or gal for that matter. It is all in the details and preparation that most racers aren't committed to do. Oh, yea one more thing......save your lunch money.

 

Dave I have read a few books on the stockers. Its very facinating . Although I could never see my self racing on that level of competition I would like to build somewhat of a tribute down the road. I know class racing is big money to stay competitive which is why I like heads up index classes . I know many guy's interpreted the rules diffrently , careful preperation and countless testing gave the top guys the edge. Stuff I can only dream of but I appreciate the history of it a lot.

Not a 442. In one the car is I/SA with 7" tires and the other is SS/KA with 9" tires.
1971 trim in Stock; 1972 in SS.
