Eyeing my car once again and looking the paint, same thoughts than before came to my mind, and for that im asking for help.

My car has been apparently stored same way on yard always, since drivers-side paint is really greatly preserved, and other side is sun-burned, at few spots paint is really thin, and lacquer is cracking on some places.

At 1976, what kind of car-paint GM was using ( i heard that some old paints dont react well with modern paints)?

What ive been pondering, is that i would like to preserve the look it has now, with all the sunburns, few dings it has etc, and present it that way.
What options do i have? Can i get it re-lacquered? Some dont like over-laquered patina, but i like it. Or some other way to preserve the paint plus protect it and the body-panels underneath the paint?

All help and tips appreciated.

 

Your 76 has single stage paint. You could color sand the paint and eliminate the sun damage, or you could just wash the car and keep the patina. I wouldn't spray clear coat over a single stage paint. I don't think it would give you your desired effect. If you want to go to a BC/CC paint then at least scuff the OE paint before you spray it. There are new BC/CC paints that won't react chemically to the old SS paints.

 

Thanks for reply. So, are you saying my car dont have/ shouldnt have laquer on it? Im totally out when speaking of paints.
There is just that clear translucent layer peeling off on sunburned side on top of trunk area, which i thought is laquer?

 

Jouni, it sounds like your car has a BC CC paint from some time in its previous owners life. I think the 76 did come with lacquer.

If your trunk is peeling then it apparently has a BC/CC sprayed on it. You might be able to wet sand the clear off of the trunk and re-spray with clear. Here is a rattle can clear that's highly rated by members on our site:

Got me thinking. As 44 years old, it is indeed possible it has been repainted at some point. Got me also thinking, have previous owner maybe tried to protect the sunburns by laying laquer on top of it, since now when i think, the problem is only at trunk area, hmm... And at roof and bonnet, which are also sunburned, there is absolutely no signs of laquer, and the good side is also without it as far as i know, by the feel of the paint. It dont have that "smooth, even" feel when passing your finger on it, as in laquer paints.

 

Update- yesterday i went to garage and inspected this very thing.
Turns out- passenger side has been sprayed with laquer, some test from previous owner maybe? Underneath the peeling laquer was original paint- by the feel, and worn look which matched rest of the paint; and i even found the boundaries of that laquer. Gonna get that off.
Looked underneath, behind the panels and all seams; seems it is not something related to crash; all panels fit as **** as ones on drivers side.
Seems like it was just an test-lay from someone, and they didnt carry it all over the car, as weird as it sounds. Thats why its peeling off also, i think.
