72 W-29 Stripe Location - Does This "Look" Right?
Getting close on getting my car back. The W-29 striping I'm having put on this 72 442 vert - does this look right to everyone? The 442 numerals were located using templates indexed off some original 442 fenders, and the painter looks like he correctly placed the stripes where the assembly manual indicates they should be located. It just looks to me like either the numerals are too high, or the striping is too low compared to some photos taken of original cars back when they were new. Yes, I know the factory didnt always exactly follow the specs, it still just looks a little odd.

Here's a picture of an unmolested original. At the time the car was owned by Tom Krause and had 4700 original documented miles. He sent me several great shots of the car, so if you need some others, I can post them for you. Tom emailed me back some time ago and let me know he had sold the car. As you can see the pinstripers at the factory weren't as concerned about perfection back then, just needed to connect the lines from the jig.

Boy this is costing me some dough. My painter has done an amazing job on getting these stripes right and integrated into the paint (no bump) - it's gonna be a fortune now to fix

At the factory they actually had a jig to do that job. There wasn't time for being as crisp as what you've got on the base coat. Unless your car is going to be an OCA trailer queen I'm not sure I'd spend anything fixing it. It will look amazing to just about everyone who sees it.
Here's a pic i just pulled from pinkslip.us. It's a '72 that Debora Blomster had during the '70s. If you decide to do the stripes over, remember that the stripes between the front wheels and front bumper should be horizonal (i.e. level with the ground) and not follow the slight angle of the body crease below it. The only side stripes that follow the angle of the body crease are the ones between the rear wheels and the rear bumper. (talk about fanatical, huh?

Thanks for the pic!! I went to go see the painter yesterday. I saw them full length and it just looks wrong - and also, they're not very visible when you're closer to the car.
I'm going have him redo them per the pic Allan sent me ( is only going to charge me 500.00) and will give my painter the additional detail about the front stripes. To me, it is about getting it correct, but JUST as much, I like the way the original stuff looks!

Here are 5 shots of several I have on this original paint car.
Rats, I had this ready to post and closed it by mistake. Yes, I have the pics you're looking for. I can post low res ones here for you to see the general position, but they're horribly unclear because I had to re-size them so C.O. would accept them. If you PM me your email, I can send you the High Res pics. You can zoom in on the areas you want and the detail stays sharp.
