very little fuel to carb
very little fuel to carb
73 Cutlass 350 4bbl
The Old pump and the new one I just put on barley spirt any fuel into the new Clear filter I have between the Pump and the Edelbrock Carb.. The return Line has plenty of pressure and is sending gas back to the tak very well.
It will idle well for a while and the starts to starve, then I see a splash in the filter (barley any fuel at all) and the idle will pick back up.
What's the stock pump pressure to the carb ?
I'm thinking of putting in 2 tee's betwwen the Carb and return lines to see if I get more fuel flow to the carb and better idle.
I haven't driven the car yet.
At High idle it still seems that there is barley any gas in the filter as well.
On my Pontiac, the Filter stay mostly filled.
Thanks in Advance,
ACE

Are you sure you haven't fitted the delivery line to the return in error?.
If not it seems you have something restricting fuel from the pump. try disconnecting the line to the carb from the pump and see if fuel comes out, if it does work up the line to see when it doesn't. When you find no or very little fuel you have found the problem. I would look to the filter before you do anything else though, I think it is the most likely cause of a blockage.

The line to the carb is the 3/8 diameter steel tube that attatches to the pump via a threaded tube nut. It is on correct.
It did (the other night) shoot out the end of the line prior to installing the filter.
I blew thru the filter and it flowed easy enough.
I really don't want to try to run it with no filter at all.

Got it !
When I pulled off the filter the line was pressurized.
The cat had been sitting asince last summer. The other day I puuled off the top of the car to check the floats and needle valves. The floats were free and the needle valve dropped down. I assumed all was OK,
To day I doused the carb with carb cleaner and sprayed cleaner into the fuel inlet and then blew it thru and the carb out with air.
Seemed to work fine after that. I deduced that there was som old gunk arount the needle seats clogging the valve and not letting fuel enter the carb.
Thanks

Glad it's fixed!
Throwing parts at it, without accurate diagnostics, just cost you time and money!
Don't feel bad, though - even professional shops do it, but get away with charging their customers!!

"fixed" is in Question, but I did narrow it to the Carb.
Either the floats or needle valves are sticking (maybe old soft rubber) or someone put sugar in the gas prior to me bying the car.
I just came in and the problem is back. It would not start again and bno fuel squirts thur he "squirters" I diconnected the fuel line and tryed to blow into the carb with very little air going in.
I just looked and I do have a rebuild kit for the carb, but I just don't feel like doing it.
I have a 750 CFM (1407) out in the shed that I could try swapping out.
I'd almost rather buy a new Carb then F with an old carb I know nothing about. Damn thing is, I just sold the last 1405 I had a couple months ago when I bought a new 1406 for the LeMans.
Crikey !

What I would do is disconnect the rubber fuel line from the pump and try to blow air back to the tank. I had a problem with my 72 Nova getting fuel. My Nova has a 2 piece line to the rear. So I disconnected it at the pump and the middle. I blew air through the first half and it was fine. Then I blew are through the rear half and no air would pass. I disconnected it from the tank and air passed. So I tried to blow are through the sending unit into the tank and it was plugged. I ended up dropping the tank and the sending unit sock was plugged. The whole tank had so much rust and crap that I ended up replacing the tank and sending unit. My car fired right up.

Check the sock on your inlet tube inside the fuel tank - it's probably coated with gunk or torn, allowing floating bits of junk to suck up against the tube, blocking it, then floating away again after the engine is stopped.
A new carburetor will not fix this.
Replacing parts until the problem goes away is an expensive and time consuming method of repair.

it would not start because to gas was flowing to the Carb.
If it's not raining tomorrow, Itry to start it. When it doesnt start (again) I'll fire up the compressor and blow air back into the Carb Inlet (not back in to the Tank), reconnect the hose and try to start it. If it starts that would mean the problem is with the carb , not the tank.
I'll report back tomorrow !

You're going to blow compressed air INTO the float bowl, through the needle and seat?
Ummmm... Okay. I hope that works out okay.
I have never done that, nor heard of anyone doing that, but I suppose it is one way of doing it.
It's not the first thing I'd recommend, but it might not damage anything.

I did it the other day in short bursts and seemed to work out OK.
Maybe I'll take the top back off and replace the needles and seats. I know I should go ahead and rebuild the carb. That's probaly next I'm sure.

Might just be the float is stuck or gum around the needle valve, you will see easily enough when the top is off the carb.
I'm Roger Gurr btw, not Thomson. The rusty part comes from the old wrecks I use as DDs.
