missing...
V code Supreme convertible is very desirable but this car does not have any W-29 pieces on it. Also the notched rear bumper is missing. On top of that it is a crappy color combo.

If any of you read the dealer sticker, it is NOT a 442 W29. The seller obviously mislabeled the ad, which isn't unusual for old cars. Nice car with lots of potential. IMO a lot overpriced for its current condition and mileage.
BTW, dog dish hubcaps were standard equipment on all 72 A body. Very plain and basic car. Gotta agree with Dave, it's an ugly color.

You guys are too critical. It doesn't say its a 442. It says its a Cutlass with 442 package. V code in the VIN means 455 4 bbl 4 speed. 270 hp. I wouldn't be surprised if it has a rear sway bar. Dual exhaust doesn't mean it has to have the cutout rear bumper. That cost more. Yes that would be an even more rare car than a 350 4 speed Cutlass. Olds probably sold more 442 455 4 speed convertibles in '72.

Ummmm.... In 1972, if you ordered a Cutlass and checked the box that said "W29," you got the "4-4-2 Appearance and Handling Package," which is to say that a Cutlass with the 442 package was a 442.
Conversely, a Cutlass without the 442 package was not a 442.
If that car had the 442 package, it would be a 442.
Since it is not a 442, it does not have the 442 package, and is therefore being falsely (and, knowing Craigslist, I would presume intentionally falsely) advertised.

A lot of people selling U & V code 72 Supremes call it the 442 package. Is this really deceptive? It's a 72 V code convertible. It's more rare and maybe slightly less desireable than a similar 442, but the price isn't out of line

Friend of mine picked up a similar car from a tow yard. '70 Cutlass S convertible. It was a 455 4bbl, turbo 400, bench seat. Red, white interior, a/c, ps, power drum brakes, SS Is. It had boxed rear control arms and rear sway bar. No 442 rear bumper, just turn downs. If someone installed the 455 and rear sway bar they did a great job. All the a/c parts were still there under the hood. One oddity: it had a '69 TQ code 3.91 posi rear so yes, it might have received parts from a 442. The 455 was a '70 with E heads.

The boxed control arms/sway bar were an option (FE2) on any of the A bodies', at least the 2drs., a/c..an option certainly not just a 442 option, the 455 if original, would have E heads, not exclusive to the 442.

Post a pic of the data tag, if a "_" then one of four special order colors, in which case you will have to check the door jambs, under the carpet etc. to see if the original color is still there. The special order colors were: Ralley Red (looks orange), Nugget Gold, Sebring Yellow, and Agean Aqua.

You can tell it is a customer specific ordered car as a dealer would never order a Supreme without at least wheel covers, and bucket seats without a console would not happen. I agree the colour doesn't do it any justice and the price is a tad on the high side. But, then again if you want a 455 four speed convertible, you may be a while looking to find something as original as this car is. Yes, paying extra for the 442 option to get the different grilles and the numbers on the fenders and trunk lid along with the notched bumper would have been a wise investment. Perception is everything, and saying you have a 442 brings more bragging rights, for lack of a better word than saying you have a Cutlass Supreme.

Yes, you are correct. In the last part of the 70 model year and in 71 you could only get a 455 with the SX package. In 72 you could order a 455 in any Cutlass, including an F85 four door sedan. Now, that would be very rare, most likely ordered by the economically minded family guy towing a trailer. (How's that for speculation?) The other difference in the 72 model year, is that you could order a four speed in the Cutlass Supreme with a 455, you couldn't do that with the SXs. With the SXs though, full wheel covers, (PO1s) were a mandatory option as was the TH400.
I still like the 70 and 71 Supremes much better than the 72s as they had distinctive side trim with 3/4 wheel cutout mouldings, and on the hardtop, the distinctive and classier halo vinyl roof.

Sorry but that is not true. Bucket seats & column shift were standard & the flight bench with fold down arm rest was a no cost option on the Surpreme in 1972.

I realise that Dave, my point is dealers ordered certain options on cars to make them look attractive and to satisfy the average buyer. You would never see a Supreme without whitewalls and wheel covers or SS wheels and they usually added floormats, door edge guards, a clock and perhaps deluxe seat belts, etc. If the dealer wanted bucket seats, they would order the console to go with it, because the buying public would want or at least expect it. In this case the buyer didn't want to anti-up for the console or it was an oversite. Most people assume if you order bucket seats, a console comes with it. By saying it would not happen, I was referring to orders for inventory placed by the dealer, not that you couldn't get it that way. Sorry for the confusion.

I had a U code Matador Red 1972 Cutlass Supreme that came with bucket seats & column shift. I spoke with the son of the original owner & the car was sitting on the lot in Edmonton Alberta when his dad bought the car and he remembered that day they picked it up. I sold that car to a buyer in MT who did a full resto on the car.

In 72, the 455 came with Ga heads, E's were from 1970. The seller's mistake is advertising it as a 442, but in reality, it is a far more desirable car than the majority of 72 442s, as most of them were 350 automatics. It has the correct dual snorkel air cleaner, only on 455 four speed cars in 72. I would put a notched bumper on it if it were mine.

There were only 66 of these L75 455/M20 convertibles built. That includes regular Supremes and W29 cars.
Without the W29 package, it would not get the cutout bumper by default just because it's a 455 car.
