Just read a link posted on a ROP and it seems this will only affect cars with pollution controls. Off road race cars are still fine and it seems since my hunk of crap has no emmissions control and the great state of Illinois does not do testing on 95 and older vehicles I think I'm OK lol sucks for modern muscle guys but it seems there always ways around it like off road tunes and stuff like that.

 

Here's the problem. The EPA has been turned into a liberal wing of the Feds and they are using it to control any and everything. The air in the the USA is plenty o clean enough but in China,they can't see across the street. What freaking good is eliminating pollution to the finest degree here when the rest of the world doesn't play by the same rules?

 

So they can try to control EVERY aspect of our lives!!!!

 

^^^Exactly. As far as pollution goes, a volcano will erase any gains you make by hindering cars pollution. Just plant a tree or something.

 

I actually know that... I was thinking more along the line of the various models being represented of the auto manufacturers and the public perception... The next step for the EPA will be that a race car can not have an appearance the likes of a manufactured vehicle...

 

I'm bothered by this for numerous reasons. First and foremost, the amount of emissions put out by race cars that would be covered under this provision is not even measurable. Is this really the best use of bureaucrats' time in cleaning up the environment?

Second is this:

Let that sink in for a second. This is the slippery slope of banning aftermarket performance parts.

Third is this, which is unfortunately all to common in government:

That on-line petition was created yesterday. At 8:30 AM EST today, there were over 38,000 signatures. As of 2:00 PM, it was over 65,000. That's in about 24 hours from creation.

It's funny, back when petitions were on paper, I never thought twice about signing them, but now every time I sign one of these, in the back of my head, I wonder where there is a list of what I've signed, just in case anyone needs it "for later on."

It makes no friggen sense

 

All they have is your name, email, and IP address. Google and Yahoo have had that information for years (and that's where the NSA gets it, anyway!)

Sometimes I think people get a little crazy about things like that. For example, why do people cover up their license plate when posting a photo of their car on line? Do they cover the plate when they drive it on the street? For that matter, I don't understand the whole thing about keeping the VIN secret. You can see it through the windshield when the car is parked (yeah, for 1968-up cars...).

 

I obscure the plate on that car because it's my wife's name.

Completely unrelated. The low-volume manufacturer law only exempts the cars from certain onerous requirements like crash testing and rollover protection. Cars built under this provision still need to be certified compliant for current-year emissions laws (though apparently the cars are exempt from annual testing - go figure???). This means that the replicas will need to use emissions-certified crate motors like the Chevy E-rod motors.

 

Actually, I didn't even notice that on yours. I was mainly referring to photos in ebay and Craigslist ads.

 

Auto racing is the most attended sporting event in the country. It stands to reason that the emissions from all of the spectators' cars driving to and from the track dwarfs that of the few cars participating in the race. Therefore, if the EPA really wants to lower emissions due to auto racing, they should outlaw bleachers and make us all watch it at home on TV. Shhhhh -- don't tell them!

In the interest of getting this thread back to the OP's original intent - namely trying to defeat the overreaching proposed legislation by EPA to prohibit modifying emissions-controlled vehicles into race cars for off-road use only - I've moved the climate change discussion to this new thread in the Clubhouse forum. Feel free to continue that discussion there. I tried to move every post on that topic. If I missed something it was due to an error and not intentional.

Back to this topic, SEMA has just created a website that allows you to very easily send a letter or email to your elected officials asking them to support legislation to defeat the proposed rule. Please go to that site and send a letter. You will have the option of simply sending the letter as written by SEMA or modifying it with your own words. I recommend the latter, if possible, since that will show that you personally took the time, vs. simply clicking SEND.

"The EPA’s new interpretation of the Clean Air Act would essentially rewrite the law and 46 years of policy and practice," said Kersting. "Without congressional intervention, the racing community and racing parts manufacturers would be operating outside of that new law and could be targeted for enforcement." The language in H.R. 4715 makes clear Congress’ intent to exclude competition-only cars from the scope of the Clean Air Act, including converted street vehicles.
