How do you buff out a filled deep scratch?

I have a short (~4") but deep scratch on my hood. Paint is enamel, no clearcoat, and in really good shape. I think it was repainted ~8 years ago with little exposure since. A really nice shine with minimal flaws. I was able to blend a color match and have the scratch filled in, but it is a little proud of the rest of the paint. Can I polish it out with polishing compound and a buffer? I don't want to repaint the whole hood now. It looks O.K., but from the right angles it is definitely above the rest of the painted surface. I appreciate any and all advice, including be more careful you dolt!

I think you should be able to block sand it with 2000 wet sand paper (real gentile) and then even 4000 grit . Then some nice hand polishing compound. Just my thoughts.
