Reno Report and Update Please!

I was a little disappointed that best of show went to a car that wasn't even Olds powered. With so many cars to pick from you would think something all Olds would edge out a Chevy big block powered car. I could applicate the huge amount of work and skill that went into that custom though. Judging is a very subjective afair, glad I didn't have to make that call .....Tedd
How does a car powered by a big block Chevy win best in show at the Olds nationals?

I was just at the OCA Nats in Reno, as as usaul the judging was bogus. Two thirds of the judges do not know or have a hint of what they are looking at! I just attended the Offical Hot August Kick-off Party at the Bonanza Casino and out of 300 entrants I just won "Best Of Show". At the Nats I did not even get over 975 points to win best of class. I was rated against 299 other street rods, resto-rods, classic cars of other makes, and I won. The judges stated that it was the best restored GM car Olds W-31 thay had ever seen! Come on are you kidding me! I beat out Corvettes, Cameros, Mustanges , Shelby's, street rods from Calif, and restro mods, and I won???????????????? does this validate the car? No but jezzzzzsss I wish the OCA judges knew something. it seemed from the conversation I had with the judges at the Hot August Nights knew more than the OCA Judges in general!

What did it score last years and what exactly did they see or not see to come up with your score this year.

The OCA judges try hard but are volunteers. Each judge will know a few years better than others, of course. In the class judged by group of judges I was with, there were 28 cars and it took all day in the 100 degree heat. The best way to improve OCA judging is to volunteer your time and share your knowledge. Ed Konsmo, head judge, is assembling information sheets on various years and option packages to assist judges in the future.

Well, To a certain degree you are correct, mistakes are made at every Nationals. Bare in mind that these folks are volunteering time out of their vacations to participate to make it happen. If you consider yourself a well educated/veteran Oldsmobile expert, then perhaps you should talk with Ed Konsomo at the next Nationals and express any concerns and volunteer your time to make the judging as accurate as you feel that you can make it.

X's 5. DaveB, CONGRATULATIONS on winning the Best of
Show at the Hot August Nights event with your W31! What a coup! I feel strongly that the judging is going to improve with Ed's Kosomo's focus on same, but it won't happen overnight. I predicted it would take 10 years of continous refinement to get to the proper level when the new Chief Judge was elected; hope I'm wrong, and it can be done more quickly. A thankless, volunteer job to be Chief Judge, or any judge, for that matter. What's that old saying: "You can please some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time". Once again, congratulations on your great win at the HAN's, and your obvious 1st place at the OCA Nationals. You could be of great assistance to Ed, I'm sure, with specific items to be listed on the eventual changes in the judging sheet on your particular vehicle. I'm sure he would be willing to listen.

I know Ed personally as he is a member of the Puget Sound Chapter and I see him often. He does take his position seriously and has made a commitment to improve the judging. He needs support to do this, so step up and help, he is very open to good input, leave the grousing behind when contacting him. He has posted his e-mail and telephone number in JWO for all to use to contact him

Im sure that if we bottled up all the energy, enthusiasm and passion that is in the thread and turned it over to Ed as "time contributed" many of the less than ideal situations would be remedied.
Isnt it more satisfying to help solve a problem than it is to point one out?
