Reno Report and Update Please!

I had a great time, other than the sun and wind burnt my lips bad. I had great success with the swap meet. Thanks to all who bought something from me. I was real empressed, by the east coast guy, that bought a lots off my items, and came by plane, so had to ship their parts home.

Harv, we East Coasters know the value of nice, dry, Western shiny and sheetmetal.
Truth be known, anymore I'd rather have it because the shiny has just enough "patina" to look like it's still the part the factory installed however many years ago, and there is no doubt that a rust-free original part is going to fit better than repop sheetmetal.

I have been to many car shows in my life with the Olds, my 58 Dodge Custom Sierra and my husbands 57 Plymouth Fury. We have won awards at a few and lost alot.
We don't go to car shows to collect trophies, we go there to meet people and socialize.
One of the most touching memories I have of my Hurst Olds happened back in 1990. I had entered my car in Hot August Nights and had it parked on Virginia St for the day. They were going to start the parade when a gentleman walked up to my car with tears in his eyes. He told me how his best friend thru school had bought one of these and they used to drive all over. They had made quite a few memories with that car. They both ended up going to Vietnam and his buddy didn't come home. He told me how he hadn't seen or thought of his friend for a long time. I walked over to the passenger side door and opened it up and told him to get in. I took this "stranger" for one more lap with his friend. It was all I could do not to cry while watching him gently touch the dash and seats and everything else he could touch with tears running down his face.
The parade went around downtown Reno and then I took him back to his wife. He thanked me once more and said goodbye to his friend and disappeared into the crowd.
That is why I show my car. Not to collect trophies, but so people can look at them and remember parts of their past, and people they've lost.

tndrtgr, great post! I think your priorities are spot on!
Thank you for the photos that have been posted. If anyone shot any nice close-ups of the '59 Holiday Sedan (looks like a Ninety Eight) at the far left in this photo, I'd love to see them! Moreover, if anyone has contact information for the owner, I'd love to invite him to a '59 GM event we're doing near Tacoma. (Looks like Oregon license plates, but might be California or elsewhere.) I'm already in contact with the owner of the black '59 Super 88 sedan we've seen in a few photos; the owners are from the Seattle area.

Has anyone reported yet that CINCINNATI has won the bid for 2013?
Back to the midwest ought to be a helpful boost for the Nationals! Greater Cinci Chapter will be host! I already told the Chairman, John Muchmore, to 'sign me up"! Possibly 1st registrant??

I hope this meet in Cinn. goes better than the last one. The host hotel went out of business and left the chapter holding the bag. It was a cluster for sure but they did the best they could considering the circumstance.

Were in the paper
Shortly after the judging I was approached by a gentleman who introduced himself as a photographer for a local newspaper. He asked if it was OK to photograph my car for an article in the next days paper. He took about 20 pictures and told me someone would come around and get a statement about the show and Oldsmobile in general. I don't know why he picked my car over all the out standing examples of Oldsmobile. It could have been because her top was down, and every one knows when a Lady's top is down she draws attention. I waited with baited breath for the next days paper, but no article showed. Next day - same disappoinyment.
Only after we were home did we realize there are two papers in that area. The article was in the Daily Sparks Tribune. I was a little disappointed because very little of my car was shown - mostly my fat mug in the picture, but a good article about Oldsmobile with a lot of information from another Olds guy, Mr Consoli. I must point out an error though, a mis-quote at best. I have never won a best in show - ever...not ene in the smallest show I ever attended. I don't know where that came from.
Lots of thanks to all of you who posted your pictures from the show. My camera gave it up on my first shot. I'm reliving the show through your pictures...Thanks Tedd

I have about 200 photos I could post, although since I had to leave on Friday morning they were all taken on Thursday and most are 50s era cars (the old folks seem to like to arrive early). They are all high resolution; is there an easy way to dumb them down and post them all at once?
I personally had a great room (paid $10 extra for free internet and water in the room). I met some great people (John, Lee, Harv amongst them), and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I have no complaints (at least in regard to the car show).

Hi Peter: I just downloaded freeware called easy thumbnails. I have not played with it but I have the same problem as you with pictures that will not load on the web sites. Sorry again for kicking your b...tt on the go kart slide course too.

Jason: Someone will have the cutlass 442s and hurst car pictures. There were two 1970 w-30 convertible 4 speeds and more convertibles, couple pace cars, bunch of hurst olds, several great w-31s and a bunch of w-30s hardtops. The early 442s were also well represented with some nice cars. Stay tuned and someone will post. I will send you the details of my car by email. I have your email address.

I finally figured out how to download pictures from my phone camera to the computer, so here goes.
First, I thought the Nationals were a complete success. It's the first national meet I've ever brought a car to, and everything went like clockwork. As well, the accomodations were top notch, there was ample parking for trailers and tow cars, and there were lots to do in the Reno/Tahoe area. I'm familiar with the area because my son lives there, but it is still always fun to go there. There weren't a lot of pictures here early on because most of us were busy prepping our cars to go onto the show field. I know I didn't even think about a computer until just yesterday!
I'll post my favorite pictures in a few posts. Here goes: These pictures are of a '66 Delta 88 with an M20 4-spd transmission. At first I didn't think it was real. But, the owner (who is the first an only owner) says it is, and even has the window sticker to prove it. I wouldn't be surprised if it is just one of a few like it, and it might very well be the only one. Real interesting!

Here are a few more of my favorites. I talked with the owner of the yellow '65. He and his wife had one when they first got married and this is a re-creation of that car. The wheels really make that car look sharp. And there's a 455 under that hood. The red '65 is also beautiful and the wheels do the car well. And, the Woody - well, who could pass up one of those?!!!

...and finally, this is how we got there - the lazy man's way - tuck it in a covered trailer and go! No bugs to clean off of the front of the 4-4-2, A/C comfort with satellite radio in the pick-up, and 11mpg average for the trip - a choking $700 in diesel fuel but it was all worth it! I look forward to the next national meet that I can attend, with or without the car!

I just returned from the Reno OCA event. It was great. There was about 400 cars. Yes, it was hot. However, there was some fun storm activity which broke up the heat. The host hotel had internet access, but it cost $5 for 15 minutes to use their computer. The host hotel was really really nice. There was a bunch of things for the kids to do: movies, stuffleboard, arcades, and of course the pool. The hotel is big and had a wide selection of places to eat, drink and be merry. Judges had a hard time because of the heat. The hotel had golf carts going around passing out water like crazy. The hotel made for good hosts and the NorCal Chapter did a great job. There were many things to coordinate and things went well. Reno is a nice destination city and the Norcal folks did good selecting the place. It takes a bunch
of miles and lots of traffic away from the folks traveling a long way. There are about 200 people in both the NorCal and Socal Chapters. The hotel had a large welcome room for show folks with lots of things to look over. The hotel also had many places to shop in additon to the wide selection of foods. There was the usual large selection of Cutlass 442's. However, there were also many other very interesting cars to look over. Examples: Several turbo Jetfires were there looking better than new from '62. They are very nice. Lots of great '50's era cars, 60's - 80's full size, wagons, etc. There was a huge 1913 Olds, fantastic. Many race cars. The new OCA president went way out of his way to make racing happen at this event and many people enjoyed the event even tho a little drive to the track from the hotel. Of course, we like to drive, right? This is the second time NorCal did the OCA Nationals, the last time was 1986. I am from SoCal and it is hard to get enough people to commit to weeks of work to make such a nice event happen. NorCal did good to hold it out of the big traffic areas. SoCal is full of traffic which makes tours harder. We do have some nice car museums; however, Los Angeles is about 100 miles from end to end. It is hard to get all the right places lined up easily. The biggest town East of Los Angeles that could do a nationals is Phoenix which also has a lot of traffic. Flagstaff does not have a place big enough and no locals there to organize it. San Diego for sure does not have enough members to make a National happen. Good idea from NorCal to cut miles off from the travelers and do Reno. That makes bringing cars from the mid west easier. I do like the central USA locations, especially when they are close enough for a GM plant tour as a part of the event. Just remember it is hard to get the local chapter to commit to the event, it is a huge amount of work. OCA always needs more members, especially younger ones. I encourage all members to try to recruit new folks. I learned about this site at Reno in my swap space, thank you very much. I will encourage other OCA members to join. This site is a great resource for Oldsmobiles. Regards

We returned from the nationals yesterday and drove 6300 miles return in our suburban without air and showed our panels in the swap meet.
HAD A GREAT TIME!!!!!!!!!
We didn't sell anything nor did I expect to, we allowed the people on the west coast to see and view our panels and just know that we are reproducing them.
The people we met and old friends that we caught up with made this trip worth while.
We were well represented from the Ontario area and from the BC area as well....WELL DONE CANADA
Our friends drove a 57 98 all the way there and as mentioned earlier had some issues. Everyone at the show that we dealt with was very respectful. Everyone we talked to was having a great time both on the show field and with the cruises to Tahoe and the museum.
THIS WAS A GREAT SHOW
All of the armchair quarterbacking doesn't mean a thing if you wern't attending because the meet is for those that are willing to go because YOUR NOT IN THE GAME!
I enjoyed the show, my wife had a great time,we saw some fine cars, had great food, met up with new and old friends what else can you ask for?
I'm looking forward to next years meet in Des Moines!!!!

Reno Nationals
Well said Steve. I also saw your panels and noted them in case I meet a member needing them. I meet non-members and help them all the time with tech issues and or parts, also try to get them to join OCA. I met Canadian and USA friends and had a great time at Reno. Great hotel, Great show well run, makes for a good time. Hope many members of this site can make it to Iowa. You will not regret your trip. I hope to see you all there. You don't all need a car, some folks can carpool and then judge others cars. I didn't bring a car, but did the swap meet 2 1/2 days and gave out tech help. Fun!!

Well, Juju and I and the rest of the Texas group returned yesterday (Friday) with about 4473 new miles on CCRider! What a trip. Started by staying the 1st night in Tumcumcari NM at the Blue Swallow Motel - 12 units on Rt 66, cars parked in the garage next to your room! Old timey, and the owners were great car folks - 2 Pontiacs. Had a great time at the Nats, saw old/new friends, folks from CO, bought some stuff, won a 1st place w/CCR, and once again, saw parts of the US of A that we've never seen! Awe inspiring, spectacular sights on those deserts that just take your breath away. Am going to post a picture I took, driving at 75 MPH, when Donna said over the 2 way radio, "someone with a camara take a picture of that view"! Also a picture of the Show Field (I heard 290+) and the Best of Show - highly modified. Juju doesn't like it at all! I have to appreciate all the extraordinary body work that went into it. I wonder how long it took to build????? The PEOPLE is what the Nationals are all about..............period, in my opinion. Eric, sorry I didn't recognize or place you that day; about 10 minutes later while telling Juju, I "clicked". Regards to your sweet wife and two girls. Trublu442, thanks for selling me the vents; great putting a face to the name!

I am very glad to see all of the positive comments like mine on the Reno Nationals. Hopefully as OCA discusses future nationals they can see the benefit in giving all parts of the country a chance even if it is not very often. Thanks to the Northern Calif Club for making a special event for me and my family. Also, where else would you get three great rally red w cars in a row.

Aron, you got the vents from 2blu. But don't feel bad, Trublu was there too! I had the chance to meet him in person as well.
Really nice pictures everyone! Thank you for posting.
Lee, I agree it was a great event and I'm glad it was on the West Coast. There may not have been as many cars but I know I met a number of people from back East, up North, down South and even Bermuda! (Hi Peter) So all said and done I agree it's worth while moving it around the country.

Best of show
I was a little disappointed that best of show went to a car that wasn't even Olds powered. With so many cars to pick from you would think something all Olds would edge out a Chevy big block powered car. I could applicate the huge amount of work and skill that went into that custom though. Judging is a very subjective afair, glad I didn't have to make that call .....Tedd

I was incredibly pleased with the overall execution and presentation of these Nationals. I got to see some dear Oldsmobile friends again and got some fantastic help from John (2blu442). One of my favorite cars came from Canada, near Vancouver BC - the '70 W31 owned by Tomsw31. It was fun to look over such an out-of-the-ordinary car! Plus, Tom and I had great conversation. The person I looked for for a few days but just couldn't seem to locate was Aaron Nance from Texas - I really would have liked to meet and talk with him in person, just from my most positive impression of him in print. And finally, I am forever grateful to 442Harv for selling me 4 real nice 1968 PO1 hubcaps for just $20! Those hubcaps will never go on my car (they are just for display), and they weren't originally on the car (it came originally with the N95 wire wheel covers), but those hubcaps were on the car when my dad bought it in March 1969 (see picture to the left). Now I can say I have a set of those hubcaps! My only regret is that somehow, some way, I lost my XL t-shirt and XL polo shirt - they got left somewhere in the bag they came in - just too many things to think of for my simple mind! Super kudos from me to the NORCAL Olds Club for executing such a fun and pleasureable event!

BS juding at OCA Nats
I was just at the OCA Nats in Reno, as as usaul the judging was bogus. Two thirds of the judges do not know or have a hint of what they are looking at! I just attended the Offical Hot August Kick-off Party at the Bonanza Casino and out of 300 entrants I just won "Best Of Show". At the Nats I did not even get over 975 points to win best of class. I was rated against 299 other street rods, resto-rods, classic cars of other makes, and I won. The judges stated that it was the best restored GM car Olds W-31 thay had ever seen! Come on are you kidding me! I beat out Corvettes, Cameros, Mustanges , Shelby's, street rods from Calif, and restro mods, and I won???????????????? does this validate the car? No but jezzzzzsss I wish the OCA judges knew something. it seemed from the conversation I had with the judges at the Hot August Nights knew more than the OCA Judges in general!
