Help me make the Transmission Decision

I have my 455 freshly rebuilt and now I need some experienced help on which transmission I need to mate up to the motor to be the meanest and work best for me. I plan on making sure that I can outrun (if need be) any body who wants to try and test the Olds power. I have a TH350 that I had mated up to the 403 I pulled and I also have a TH400 that I pulled with the 455. Which one would be the best choise to put back into my 71 Cutlass. I am split becuase I have so many people tell me different things and I honestly have no clue when it comes to the right Transmission to use. Please help me out and give me your thoughts.

I have a preference for the 400 as it is a stronger tranny in it's stock congfigeration and less costly to build up. The 350 is lighter and uses less hp and can be built to work behind the 455, just costs a litte more at least around here it does. It mostly comes down to personal choice. You'll get different opinions on this I'm sure

Unless the TH350 is custom built to handle the torque, I'd go with the TH400. That's what the factory used. The differences in internal friction, etc, that people talk about are only measurable on the drag strip.

Use the TH400. The TH350s were/are transmission shop Queens on the best day they ever had or will ever have.

Go with the 400. It's better equipped to handle the torque.

i agree with joe. i have seen built up TH350 hold up to a modified 455 but they had many dollars in that TH350. the 400 is cheeper to build around my area also.

Thank you all, but now the next question

Thank you all so much and I will go with the TH-400. The next question is this, will the drive line that was used with the TH-350 still be used with the Th-400 or will I have to change out yokes, shorten the the drive shaft or anything else that may be really surprising when I do this. Once again, thank you all for the help.

Not sure about the yokes but the length should be fine - you might want to beef up the u-joints!

I never use mine. Broke the cable and never bothered putting another on.

If you mess up the cable on a later trans you're in trouble.
but old 350's.... no big deal.
