need help making decision
Found a great 87 442 --really nice-- no rust-- only 30k
is it realistic to be able to drive it daily weather permitting to enjoy it?
or would gas just kill me?
My explorer get like 15 now so I cant imagine its any worse
thanks for for opinions

It's got a whopping 170hp and 3.73 gears.
I'm guessing 12-15mpg or thereabouts city mileage.
Depends on how badly the carb needs a rebuild. It has the 200-4R OD trans

If it has only a 5 digit odometer, it could be 130,000, 230,000, etc.
My 1970 442 tribute shows only 7196 miles on the speedo.

1. You should have a 307 (code 9) 307. That's not bad for a lightweight car. Coupled with a 200R4 tranny (OD) you should get decent mileage. Probably around 16-18 City and 25-27 highway.
2. What's your driving style? Almost doesn't matter what kind of engine or tranny if you have a heavy foot. I found that my 82 Cutlass gave reasonable mileage in town and on highway.
3. How much $?
4. Can you get documetation that its low mileage is correct? Aceshigh is right; it could have turned the clock over a couple of times by now. When I sold my 98, it had 315,000 on it, but the odometer only showed 15,000. I kept the interior, exterior and engine bay clean as a whistle and the bright parts were bright and original + everything worked. The guy who bought it from me thought I was kidding about the high mileage until I showed him mtce records. (I had the car for 17 years before I sold it). So don't assume anything; get documentation.
5. Got any pics??

Says 16 / 23 for a 1987 Cutlass Supreme with a 4 speed auto.
That's with a new motor and carb though.

Mind you this is the 2008 revised EPA fuel economy ratings.

get it and drive it. Insurance is cheaper and will make up for some of the gas expense.
I have a 33 chev, 64 chev, and the 69 Cutlass to DD. My 64 makes 18mpg. Haven't figured the 69 mpg yet, it has 2 miles on the engine.

Varies by vehicle I noticed. But yeah you're right.
I drive very aggressively.
My 98 Lexus was rated for 17/25 as of 2008 but 19/27 pre-2008 standards.
I think I average roughly 21mpg and do 85% city driving.
Even when I do mostly 100% city I'm still upwards of 19-20mpg.
On the flipside though....
My 1995 GMC Sierra 1500 single cab 2WD pickup is my company truck
It's rated Pre-2008 for 14/18 mpg and 2008+ 13/17mpg
I typically get 11-12mpg and it's maintained VERY well through PHH.

Nice looking 442,I love the euro front ends.
I'd think your goal is perfectly within reason.Looks like you should be able to better your fuel consumption with the 442 over the explorer.Insurance should be cheaper and tires cheaper also.
Happy motoring!

I might dicker a little at the price, but dang! That's a sweeeeeet car. Oh heck just buy it. If it has all the docs to prove the mileage that's a big plus. Yes, I'd buy it and drive it, no bout adout it!
