Gas tank question

Any way to keep gas from spilling back out of tank after filling it up ? With the cost of gas I hate seeing the stuff end up on the ground. I usually don't fill up all the way but forgot last time. Any ideas would help. Thanks

Is your cap good? Vent lines leaking? Or did you just veerfill it, as gas expands with higher ambiant temps?

Maybe over filled it. It's coming out the filler tube when I drive around. I'll check the cap but I think it's ok.

You need a new cap - it shouldn't come out if the cap is on.

Dare I say: Duh.

your filler tube may have rusted through

Well, if we're assuming that the OP was wrong and that his gas cap isn't leaking, then...

Hairline crack at the junction of the filler neck and the tank, at the top edge.

Well those are all good ideas. I guest more information is needed. I replaced the fuel tank, sending unit and reused the filler tube off the old tank, but it was good with no leaks. The gas is coming out end past the cap. So I think I need a different cap. I'll try that first and let you know what happens.

As said earlier, make sure your vent line is good. There was another post about a clogged fuel vent line that caused the fuel to burble out of the tank.

If you got a repro tank it may not have the proper baffles in it to prevent fuel slosh. Unfortunately only way to see is drop the tank and remove the sending unit. You may be able to run a piece of hose or something in thru the filler neck and see if it bumps against a baffle.
