Installation of Longer Wheel Studs

I want to install some 1/4" wheel spacers on my 1970 Cutlass but I need longer studs to use them. From what I can find the stock size is 7/16-20 x 1-1/2 long with a 0.472 knurl. I will probably get some ARP or Moroso studs at 2-7/8 length and cut them down to fit. Will a 0.480 knurl work? Can I install them without taking the axles out?

DON'T!

That's an accident waiting to happen. Why do you want longer wheel studs?

I need longer studs because there is less than 1x diameter thread engagement with the spacer and the stock 1-1/2 long studs. The 2-7/8 studs would make it impossible to mount factory hubcaps. Reducing the length of the stud will not affect it's strength.

Thanks to another thread that I found here, I found some +1/4 studs in stock locally from Dorman.

I wouldn't run wheel spacers in the first place. It's too easy to measure the OE wheels and order aftermarket wheels in the correct size, bolt pattern, offset, backspacing etc. to fit properly.

Check out post #17 in this thread to see why I always discourage folks considering using wheel spacers or bolt pattern adapters:
