A little more trouble with wheel studs..

Hey all...as you may recall..I have had some bad luck recently with the wheel studs on the left front of my '62 Super 88..The kid at the garage snapped 2 of em off not realizing the right side - left side lug nut deal....They told me the studs werent available anymore and tacked welded in 5 of the wrong ones...wrong ones meaning the diameter of the splined area is too small..(hence the tack welds) I called Dorman and they gave me a part # to chase down ...which I did...now the car is up in the air with the welded studs removed and the replacement studs I bought don't fit either..can anyone give me a part # or the size of the splined diameter so I can get this thing taken care of....right hand threads are prefered as I have replacements for the rear already to make the whole car "righty tighty--lefty loosey...Many thanks in advance..B..

Magnaflux the hubs to be sure the welding didn't induce cracks. Mike the holes, or use drill bits to check size, and see what works from the Dorman size catalog.

Sorry to hear of your problems, I would have been highly upset at the garage!

L&R lug nuts sounds like a pretty stupid idea.

Kind of like that one time I put a wagon hub on my delta, and wondered why my wheel wouldn't fit.

I never knew GM did that. I found out the hard way on a 50 Plymouth I owned once that had LH studs.

Were not the L & R lugs deemed to be a safety feature? That is what I always thought?

You're correct, I hate when my wheels fall off due to fretting induced precession.

The wiki says:

"Left handed threads are used where the rotation of a shaft would cause a conventional right-handed nut to loosen rather than to tighten due to fretting induced precession.
Examples include:
The left hand pedal on a bicycle.
The left-hand grinding wheel on a bench grinder.
The lug nuts on the left side of some automobiles."

"Precession caused by fretting can cause fastenings under large torque loads to unscrew themselves.
Automobiles used left-threaded lug nuts on left-side wheels, but now commonly use tapered lug nuts, which do not fret"

Sounds good to me.

I wish I could remember for you which was which, but I chased all over town for the front and rear left side for mine. I got a mixture of Dorman and another brand. One brand fit well and the other was loose. I looked on NAPA and Rock Auto and they listed Raybestos and some other brand that I did not get either.

Hey All...Thanks for the direction on tryin to find these things....This old girl can be a real pain in the a$$ sometimes...haven't been working on her for a couple of days now...every once in a while she decides that she needs some revenge( probably for the motor swap ) and takes a big freakin bite out of me...This time I think I tore a muscle or 2 in my shoulder puttin the fuel tank back in..Anybody need lowering springs? to...I had 4 custom made for the Super to drop her 3 inches...looked cool as hell...but I didn't like the way she rode....I'm not sure of what other applications they may fit..shouldn't be hard to find out tho....they got about 300 miles on em..if nobody here wants em I'll put em on the Bay......Later....B.

I did this to my 1963 Olds 88 HC
Front & Rear are different size and length studs. All are 1/2'-20 thread
I changed to ALL RH Thread since I wanted wheel Locks. If you heat the LEFTYS stud flanges (not the studs & not too much) you can tap out the old studs. New studs fit in through the back.
NAPA FRONT STUDS are Part# BK 6411142 REAR Part# BK 6411137 ($ 2.48 each)
FORD Racing MCGARD Locking Lug Nut Kit Part# M-1012-K. ( was $44.95) yes, they fit.
I ordered @ Ford Racing Tech Hot Line (586) 468-1356 ( might have new number now)
Picked up at local Ford Dealer Parts.

Got it all straightened out...(for now)

Hey All....I appreciate all the advice and info...I've got it together now with lefty loosey studs except the left rear...I got some left hand chrome acorns for it until I get it back out in the spring...then I'll pull the new studs thru on that one and be good to go....had to install 1/8 " thick spacers on the front hubs cause the new centers wouldn't fit over the grease cap....I haven't looked in the book yet..but do I have to pull the rear axle to put in the new wheel studs? or is there room to place and pull them in one at a time...? Hope to post some more pics pretty soon...Take Care....B.
