Fuel as Filter Issue?

Yesterday was a sad day. Had to get my car home like this yesterday. AAA came to the rescue.

It seems that fuel isn't getting to my engine. When the 70 SX needed more gas, the engine cut off. I had the gas tank and filter cleaned 8 months ago and put 10 gallons of premium in the morning so I wasn't out (only drove about 30 miles).

I want to check out my fuel filter, but honestly I'm not really sure where its at. Any help?

Thanks

Trace the fuel line back from the carburetor. You should find a in line filter between it and the fuel pump. Could also be:

1. fuel pump gone bad
2. hole in rubber or metal fuel line allowing air in (check for fuel on the
ground around the car.

Or, if you still have the original rochester, its where the line goes into the carb.

There should be a strainer in the tank, for the big stuff, but the factory filter is actually in the carb, behind the fuel line inlet.
I always hold the larger nut while disconnecting the fuel line with a line wrench. [after a squirt of penetrating oil]
Remove the larger nut with a wrench or socket, [NOT AN ADJUSTABLE WRENCH. as it's brass and will destort], which will expose the filter and spring.
Replace with new - paper for paper, or brass for brass, whichever is in there.
While the line is off, you might check the fuel pump pressure - Auto Zone may let you use it, for free.

Just to let you know I replaced the fuel filter a while back and got my car in working order. I typed up a tutorial for the next guy (or gal) that runs into this issue.

Tutorial

Although most of us old timers who were brought up changing this item once per year are quite familiar with this, I say, Good job!

There are alot of posts with regard to this process, and the question does come up often as most newer cars don't require this as regular scheduled maint.
