If it's missing, it's because someone removed it. Your only option is learn to live with it.

Of course, the skeptic in my would be worried that the cowl tag might have been removed because the 336xxx cowl tag didn't match the "new" 344xxx VIN tag.

Data plate or timing tab? Data plate, or cowl tag as it is sometimes called, is located on the firewall drivers side upper area. The timing tab, is at your crank, and is used for the timing of the engine.

DOH! I saw "Timing plate" in the title and read "trim plate". Sorry about that.

If you really did mean the timing tab, it's a bolt-on part that sometimes gets left off after a timing chain replacement.

1969 and Joe: Yeah I meant the timing tab, it's gone! For a example of what I mean, in the picture below it has neither of the tabs, not just the one pointed at with the arrow. Anyone know where I can buy the tab or does anyone know how to check the timing without the tab?

Assuming it's a Olds motor (you didn't specify), you need to install one of these:

Thanks Joe! It's a 350 engine (olds I'm almost sure), do you know if this tab will work on the 350?

Yup. It fits any 1964-1990 Olds V8 block.

And to avoid the comments (), yes, it won't work with a 1964 balancer and water pump, and yes, it's not the same as the later plastic tabs, but it WILL bolt to any Olds block.
