Roofing Co. installers called to ask type/size of my roof rafters so I was up in the attic taking a couple measurements. I'm betting they're estimating number of nails (rolls) required to secure the roofing materials. Since I/they am/are installing a Fortified Roof, the type of roofing nail(s) are quite different than ordinary roofing nails. Fortified Roofing nails require ring shank nails. Modestly more expensive.
About 40 here but sunny. This was all fun but now let's get back to warm.
Took Mom to the dentist this morning, and in an unusual twist she wanted to go to the Awful house for lunch. Since the gas station is next door I stopped in to fill up the car for the week. Usually I wait until after work on Tuesday, by which time the price has gone up. Today's gas was 2.449. I don't remember why they stick that extra .009 on there.
Greg I'm second or third as long on the Good Morning Thread. Jamesbo is longest, and Dan might be longer than me. I do remember Allan. We sort of started butting heads and I really can't remember why. So I didn't converse with him. I looked him up not long ago and the last time he was on the site was June. Knowledgeable of the brand for sure, I'd like to know if he ever finished his car.
Chris your basement isn't air conditioned? The basement where I live isn't. It stays cool pretty much all summer because it's below grade, but in the winter with no heat it isn't real conducive to working down there. Which is funny because that's where the furnace is. I've been thinking about cutting a hole in one of the ducts and putting in a register so I could get a little heat if I wanted it.
Gonna take the blue van over to Mom's and get a few things out of the garage. If I would have been doing that this whole time the place would be empty.. Ah, well. It'll get done.
Those are crazy looking nails, I'll bet hard to pull out!
Greg - Agree. Materials & installation have to meet IBHS standards.
IBHS FORTIFIED roof requirements focus on sealing, strengthening, and locking down the roof system for severe weather, requiring ring-shank nails, a sealed roof deck (often with a self-adhered membrane), tighter nailing patterns, enhanced drip edge, and high-performance roof coverings (like good/excellent hail-rated shingles). Key elements include securing the roof deck with more, better nails, sealing the sheathing to prevent water intrusion, and reinforcing edges, with specific standards detailed in their technical bulletins
I'm hoping to get a grant to help offset a portion of the new roof as well as a reduction/discount in policy premium.

Ring shank roofing nail...
Norm - With nails like those, I can see why it's called "Fortified"! I can see lots of good, and potentially some bad in nails like those being used. Good, shingles should never come loose. Bad, if the roof shingles ever need to be stripped and the roof replaced in the future, the process of stipping the old roof off could be a real bitch, and popping those nails could do substantial degradation to the rafters??? I don't know, I'm not a Roofer, I'm just envisioning the future difficulty of stripping the roof in the future. More good news (I guess?), we shouldn't be around to find out???

Mike - Since my home is built on a slope with a walkout basement, essentially 3 sides of the basement are exposed. The very back wall is totally exposed, plus there are 4 large windows, and a double slider door along that wall. So my basement is much warmer in the summer, and much colder in the winter, than a fully below ground basement would be. My furnace/AC duct work down there has 2 vents that open to down there, one at each end of the basement, but I keep them closed because they really don't help much. The new standalone 240V heater that I installed a few seasons ago makes it relatively comfortable fairly quickly down there.

Greg/Dan - I saw on the national news there was a +100-car pile-up on I-196 between Holland and Grand Rapids this morning, and the highway is closed in both directions. It looked brutal, but at least from what I've seen they're not reporting any fatalities yet. Biggest issue seems to be evacuating injured and stranded motorists from the site!

ya beat me to it. I saw it on my phone at lunch, it was near Zeeland. U.S. 31 in Muskegon was closed down in both directions due to vehicle crashes including a couple of semi's. I took the senic way home (old 31). the way that it was snowing and blowing, I figured it was best just to stay off the highway. 10° on the way home, with wind gusts up to 40mph. As Jackie Stewart once said "A fine day for a motorcar race"!

Dan - Sounds absolutely brutal up there. I'm going to be saying 1000 prayers between now and when we come up in February that we can get a stretch of weather up there that comes nowhere close to resembling what you're getting right now! 🙏
Biggest college sports rip-off game of the season (Century?) tonight in Miami. Ticket prices for a college football game tonight are $3,600 to $10,000. Premium seats $10K+. Pathetic.....really pathetic.

I think it's ridiculously stupid IU pays Cignetti an annual salary of $11.5 million dollars to coach college football. Universities are no longer institutes of learning - they're American sports money making machines.

I agree it's outrageous! It's a corporate juggernaut now for sure with nothing to do with kids getting a higher education or playing for the love of the game. Looking back it makes me proud to say I played for nothing but my love for the game and the camaraderie of my teammates!

Speaking of corporate greed impacting the integrity of the game, I'm noticing there are so many commercial breaks that there is absolutely no continuity/flow to the game. It is literally painful to try and watch with so many commercials! 😫
Ended up buying those tires on Facebook marketplace. She was asking $400, then $300, then $250 so I said I'll take 'em. But I went to pick them up in Standish which is about 55 miles away in middle of a snowstorm! Well, we made it fine.

Nice buy Greg! Glad you got there and back safely! 👍
. Universities are no longer institutes of learning
It is sad at that. Is it the adjunct professors that make diddley ****, having a hard time making ends meet? Saw something a couple of years ago on a news feature, those guys could barely keep a roof over their head.
Corporate greed. Those commericials are disgusting proof of greed.
I was totally serious when I said it's just plain painful to watch! Next year I will record it, stay away from the news, and watch it later that night or in the morning and fast forward thru every frickin commercial!
Hoosiers played a good game & dominated over the struggling Miami defense. Miserable officiating. Players could have been seriously injured. F U Miami.

Agreed! Great team effort on both sides of the ball by them. Mendoza is a frickin warrior, not an ounce of quit in that kid! No wonder he's the Heisman Trophy winner, what a leader! Great win!!! 👍
They are a true Cinderella Story, 16 and 0, most wins by a team in a single season ever! Beautiful story about Mendoza's Mom too, who is wheelchair bound now in her mid-40's after being diagnosed with MS at the age of 14. He attributes his toughness and drive to her, being his role model in the way she has fought her illness.

Not sure but he got the wrong rear end cover on it. I sure am glad Norm plays golf and not into curling
