Of course, my propeller shaft parts are not here.
Sounds like a nice afternoon Norm. Sorry you had to post that last sentence.

Good morning guys,

Much cooler today. Overcast and in the high 50's right now. I think it's supposed to get into the mid-60's with some sunshine later this afternoon.

No huge plans today. Hockey on tap this afternoon/evening with one grandson having a game at 4pm and one at 7:30. I think Dawn's only going to the early game, so I'll have to run her home and grab a bite before heading back.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Boy, everyone must be busy or hung over from Friday night.

Kept an eye on Monty this morning while Dawn went to do some shopping. She has a niece that's having a baby shower tomorrow. My job was to make sure Monty didn't do anything stupid to rip any of the sutures out of his nose or eyelids. He's wearing a cone, but you can tell the sutures are itching him something fierce.

Worked out, grabbed a shower, and then Dawn and I headed out to Keegan's hockey game that started at 4pm. He played great, only giving up 2 goals and his team won 4-2. Ran home and put a frozen pizza in. I'm headed back out by myself to Gabe's game in just a few minutes. Dawn's staying home to bake some treats for the baby shower. Alot of running, but I love every minute of it. Could have went to the Culver's Car Cruise this afternoon/evening to get the car out for the 1st time, but I'd rather get to see my grandsons play any day!

Hope everyone has had a great day and has a relaxing evening!

Wow, where did everyone go???

Another wild night at the Shark Tank. Gabe had his hat-trick just 7-minutes into the game. His team was up 4-1 after the 1rst Period.

After Gabe scored his 3rd goal in the 1st Period, the other team's Coach had his two best defensemen shadowing Gabe the rest of the game. Upon seeing this, Gabe's Coach told Gabe to do everything he could to find the open man, which to Gabe's credit he did, but then the problem became Gabe's other teammates just don't have the offensive skills to put the puck consistently in the net. Truthfully, I think Gabe's team would have been better off with Gabe continuing to push the offensive pressure, but Gabe followed his Coache's direction and kept dishing the puck off to an open man.

Following this scenario, the other team caught up in the 2nd Period, 4-4. Then early in the 3rd Period Gabe scored his 4th goal to put them up 5-4, but it wasn't enough and the other team won 6-5.

I'm just hoping the Sharks Coaching Staff are taking notice of how dominating Gabe is right now at his current level and that he gets drafted up to the next level in the next Fall/Winter regular season.

Hi everyone.

Got home from the Corvair show this morning. It was a nice time. Of course it's more fun when you have a car there. Maybe next year. My friends from Florida texted me and said they were home as well.

Tiger and Mom were well when I got over there this morning. Went to Walmart and got back, now I'm doing some clean up and catching up around the house before I head back over there.

I'll do some catching up here later on. Norm I see your friend is back/was back. I clicked on the link and got about 5 seconds of the thread then I got the message No thread found. Must have been deleted.

Okay have a good afternoon everyone.

In order down the row, Grandson Keegan, Gabe, and SIL Justin. They're sitting in the 2nd row behind the Blues' bench right now in the 4th game of the Blues' NHL Playoff Series against the Winnepeg Jets . Keegan caught a puck that got flipped into the stands. Game is 1-1 after the 1st Period.

Mike - Glad you enjoyed yourself at the show. I believe I mentioned my Dad owned a Corvair for 4 or 5-years, a 4-door sedan. I remember he bought it specifically because they were supposed to go well in the snow, which it did. I remember enjoying riding in it because it seemed like a sports car the way you sat so low in it.

I've never seen a Blues playoff game, but back in the days when I used to make it to 3 or 4 regular season games a year I always tried to get Blues/Blackhawks tickets. Certainly no love lost in that rivalry!!

I was elated to have the kids/grandkids see a 5-1 Blues win this afternoon to tie the series 2-2, gaining the momentum going back to Winnepeg.

Good morning everyone.

Gonna be a slow day. Lots of people out and no one is motivated. I don't think I even have a robot guy. Eh, beyond my control.

Chris I don't remember knowing that your dad had a Corvair. Remember what year? I remember the Valiant.

Okay this is weird. I took the Charger up to the show and I had GPS on my phone telling me how to get there. Every time I rested the phone on my leg the thing would konk out and give me a message, Searching for Signal. I'd have to go out of GPS, turn it back on, and hold it in my hand. The Charger doesn't have a good place to set it on the console or dash. It worked fine as long as I held it. But put it on my leg, nada. Like I was wearing lead drawers or something.

Doctors appointment after work. Big surprise. Nothing planned the rest of the week, just chores. Summit tonight.

Have a good day everyone.

Chris - The propeller shaft parts did arrive Saturday. The Universal Joints appear to be correct. I have an extra U-Joint (Carquest) from years ago I know fits so I measure the new U-Joints against that U-Joint w/ calipers & they're the same w/in 0.001". The center carrier bearing appears exact same as what is currently installed. I sprayed the h/w down yesterday. Hope to get on it this afternoon. I'm off to my mechanic shop this morning (8:00am) for a front-end evaluation. My favorite breakfast joint is across the street from their shop. I intend to indulge while waiting.

Mike - What GPS app are you using? Google Maps or otherwise? Is your Bluetooth set to "ON" in settings? If not, try turning Bluetooth on (or off) as it most often provides better connectivity when traveling; yet, this can depend on which app you're using & on which type phone. Be sure you have the latest updates on your phone.

Norm I'm thinking there's something under the dash because when I drive the SRX or my pickup with the phone on my leg it works just fine. On the other hand, the phone itself is several years old and I don't recall Google doing any updates ever, at least ones that they told me about. Another thing it does(n't) do, the voice randomly speaks or it doesn't. The other day I was talking on the bluetooth in the car and had the GPS going, the voice wouldn't say the directions on the phone but I could hear them through the bluetooth. I thought maybe it was planned obsolescence, but LG doesn't make cell phones anymore so why would they care.

Mike - I'm just giving my best guess on the year knowing it was used when we got it, and approximately when my Dad got rid of it. I'd say it was somewhere around a '65 to '67. The only thing I remember about it being unusual (other than rear engine), was that the automatic transmission gear selection lever was on the Dash rather than the column.

Norm, glad your parts got there Saturday. Keeping my fingers crossed for ya that you're not waiting there too long, and that the evaluation doesn't uncover something big that needs replacement.

Mike - Maybe a Bluetooth device/plug under the dash you’re pairing to but don’t know it? Check your Bluetooth setting next time in the vehicle see if it’s pairing to something.

Between one of my brothers and my Mom the never checked oil on their 1963 Corvair. Brother parked it in garage one night next morning told us smoke was pouring out the heater ducts. Cracked the block.

Norm it must pair to something or I couldn't talk on the phone through the radio in the car. There's no doubt that technology has made life better on a lot of levels, but as far as GPS I'd rather look at an atlas.

Chris your car was a 4 door sedan, did it have a flush, fairly flat rear window or was it a wrap around window with the roof going out over it? Okay I won't ask any more questions about it. Yes Corvairs are very good in the snow. I had a Corvair when I lived up home and it was wonderful. Problem was it didn't have very good heat and the convertible top had holes in it so I had to bundle up when I drove.

Fourteen wheels. I doubt I make 20 by lunch. We have plenty of wheels and enough people. Maybe something is broke.

Taking a breather. Center carrier bearing bracket removed, rear propeller shaft rear mounting bolts removed, jack stands holding both propeller shafts. Next to remove rear propeller shaft - shoulders required a rest before dropping it and removing it to bench.

Chris, good to see the grandkids at the hockey playoffs, with a puck to boot. Speaking of names on jerseys, many many years ago, a friends fiancé was on a women's softball team. He wanted me to stop by and check out the game. Three of the players on her team had "names on the back. One was "Eye", another was "Master", and the other one was "Bait". Even girls like to have fun.

Dan - LoL on the girls' softball jerseys!

My grandsons had a great time at the game. It was my SIL Justin's b-day the day before, turning 31. He is an only child and a huge hockey fan. He is still playing himself in an adult recreational league. His Mom bought the whole family the tickets (4) for his b-day. I can't even imagine how much those cost near center ice and only a couple rows behind the Blues bench. Certainly at least a $1,000! Way too rich for my blood!

Center carrier bearing removed. It wasn't pretty but it's off. There is/was no grease on the slip yoke splines. What you see as blue is a factory OEM teflon (PTFE) coating. Clean it up a little more in the morning & install new carrier bearing. Why I didn't build myself a press (or buy one) many years ago I don't know. All I would have needed were a set of collars & I could have pressed this out in five minutes. The U-Joints appear fine from what I can see - I'll decide if I'm going to R&R those tomorrow.

Front-end evaluation (this morning) revealed basically a sloppy steering gear box. Of course, FMC OEM replacement is obsolete & the guys said every after-marked they've installed were $hit except for one company - which they couldn't recall the name. So, I'll be doing some research to acquire a new steering gear box over the next several weeks. Most likely someone on FTE forum has some information/suggestions.

EDIT: In case it wasn't clear or you didn't read previous post(s) that is me going nuclear on this carrier bearing w/ a grinder.

I did some research on my suspected bad steering gear box on the F250 diesel tractor. I don't know steering gear boxes very well. There are some serious aficionados on this site though, for sure. I have a Hydroboost PS system. Found a good thread (knowledgeable member) on FTE forum describing my PS gear box. I don't know the correct terms - through a lot of years diving into some gear boxes they are all different but the same to me - make sense, eh? Anyways, there's an adjustment on my gear box which is identical to the adjustment on the gear box of my 1971 CS convertible (sizes may be different). A 5/8 locking nut w/ a 3/16 interior Allen screw. I think that Allen screw (thing) is called a sector shaft(?) or a cross shaft(?) & I believe it's the sector/cross shaft which then engages (meshes to) the worm (gear) shaft. I should be able to tighten the Allen screw & remove some play - maybe all of it(?) maybe not - maybe just a temporary fix. I've never rebuilt a steering gear box but I've taken one apart. It's easy to see how either the sector/cross shaft &/or the worm gear can wear over time. At any rate, that'll be up next on the agenda after the prop. shaft is done.

Nice work, Norm. I need to buy a nice angle grinder sometime.

Thursday I hooked up the trailer and intended to move my mowers to the new place and go mow. Trailer lights corroded out at the pigtail. Repaired.

Friday, I loaded up the mowers and moved them to the new place. Mowed about 1.5 hours in the main yard area and went home.

Sat and Sun I ran a 2 day Appleseed 25 meter event. Very tiring. All students very happy. Stellar event. Unloaded some appleseed stuff at new place and went home.

Today I got up stiffer than a board, got moving, got out to the new place and mowed for 5 hours. Finished under the headlights. I finished the main yard, mowed behind the barn, next to the barn, in front of the house, most of the driveway sides, and made the grass next to the county road look decent enough. I did not mow the south extra grass, nor did I, or could I, do anything with the field because I was using a standard Troy Bilt Pony / Cub Cadet / John Deere style 42 inch 16 horse Briggs riding mower. I put that mower through it, and it did it. Also push mowed on top of the berm building. Never mowed a roof before. It's a bad cut, the grass was foot tall, and I was not fixing things, just cutting it down. I need to get a big mower or tractor or both or something. Hauled all the stuff home tonight, will mow house yard tomorrow and be done for a couple weeks.

John - Sounds like you've had your hands full. Yeah, you're going to need to figure out the mowing/yard/landscaping implements - perhaps sometime this summer since that's going to get old fast. Time to upgrade machinery.

Chris - I'm replacing the center carrier bearing + its supporting bracket. The propeller shaft is made of two pieces (front/rear). Between front/rear shafts is an intermediate piece contained on (part of) the front propeller shaft - called a slip yoke. Slip yoke contains splines. The carrier bearing is compressed onto the front propeller shaft & rotates w/ the propeller shaft. Since the slip yoke rotates as the propeller shaft (both front & rear) rotates, a carrier bearing (and bracket) is required to contain this intermediate shaft. These front slip yoke splines slide into accompanying rear splines on the rear propeller shaft. A two-piece design, with a center bearing, reduces the length of each shaft segment, allowing the rear shaft to flex and accommodate changes in drive-line angle. I've removed the rubber boot and disconnected the front propeller shaft from the rear propeller shaft by simply sliding out the rear propeller shaft to work on removal of the center carrier bearing.
