Ah, I thought he was in Pacific Palisades. Better for him.

Jamesbo how often do you have to do that? Maybe it will be better in summer.

Greg did the bathroom heater come on when the gas was gone? How would the neighbor have known to turn the heater on, if she knew the gas was going to go out why wouldn't she have called the gas company then?

Lead is back, everyone is slow, ah back to normal. Nothing is broke down though, yet.

As a thrombocyte (blood platelet) researcher I donated platelets (via apheresis) several times. Each plateletpheresis takes ~1.5hrs - 2.0hrs. You can develop chills during the procedure & your lips can tingle when you're done. I was never affected but others take a couple Tums just before plateletpheresis. Dialysis is not a form of apheresis.

Greg - On the bright side it's a good thing the gas was empty - must be LP. Having the pilot(s) go out w/ natural gas could create a serious disaster. That's cold (-3°F)....brrrrr...the skin on my fingertips is cracking just thinking about it.

Good morning guys,

John - Great job on the R&R of the microwave.

Jim - Hope you have a great Birthday buddy! Sorry your dialysis was so uncomfortable.

Greg - Nice save on your neighbor's running out of LP, sounds like you caught it just in time. Wow -3° F, and I thought it was bad here at 9°.

I hope you all have a wonderful day! 😃

--Jim, Sorry you have to go thru that. My wife was sooo close but then got a transplant, My Dad and uncle had to do Dialysis twice a week. Seems I remember that after they know how the patient reacts they tailor the procedure. I believe the 1st time can be the worst. A real good chance it will get better as they figure you out.
--Mike, I have never seen anything like that orange heat lamp. It is not connected to a switch. It's in the bathroom by the shower so I would guess you would turn it on when you get out of shower?? But no, it can't be turned on or off. Neighbor says it comes on by itself- apparently by temp. Now that house is starting to heat up light is out. Anyway it was a good thing cuz we saw it. Neighbor has the "Keep Full" option on their propane bill- so supplier is supposed to check and fill when needed. This is a seasonal place so they hadn't been up in a month or so. They live downstate full time, so I called her there and told her LP was out, then she called supplier from there. I gotta say they got there quick- But they f@@ked up! This is at least the 2nd time this has happened. Good thing wife noticed the odd orange glow next door!!

OK, so following the discussion I guess it is a free-standing electric heat lamp. Most of us likely recall these in-wall bathroom radiant heaters. They worked great to warm your *** getting out of the bathtub/shower. Several Aunts/Uncles had them in their old farmhouses but you'd also find them in many urban houses, as well. The R.R. caboose/brakeman house I rented in Urbana-Champaign, IL had a working one. I think back in the day they were primarily fed by gas (either LP or NG), but I've seen some electric styles, also. The gas ones would glow orange from the flame used to heat the ceramic blocks while the electric ones would be red. The image I found (below) demonstrates one of them; although, it's mounted higher in the wall than I'm normally accustomed to seeing. Usually, they were mounted closer to the floor. This one's in good shape - most of the ones I've seen are rather banged up; yet, still working (sorta).

Jim I hope as your treatment continues, that it will get easier on you. The last time that I gave blood, it was "double reds," that chilled me down even though it was in the summer. I was shaking like a leaf until I warmed back up, 15-20 miutes later. One year ago, I ordered four pairs of jeans for work, two pair of Levi's, and two pair from L.L. Bean. I just ordered two more of the Bean's, as they are holding up quite well, the Levi's both have a hole in the crotch. No more Levi's, I mean, if I were dry humping a fence post, then it could be excused. The holes, but not the fence post part.

Not so weird, reminds me of the simple clamp on heat lamps I put in my outbuilding for the outdoor pets at my old house. I think the unusual part is there is constant power to it and it is controlled by a thermostat. I've never seen one with a thermostat?

Dan - I am too cheap to spend +$50 or more for jeans, regardless of how well they hold up. I cheap out and buy Wranglers from Walmart for $20 and they seem to hold up remarkably well. Ya just don't get any of the fancy stitching on the pockets.

When I worked in Arkansas, BNR headquarters was located in Harrison, AR. There was a Levi's Strauss factory worker plant located just outside Harrison (in the mtns. as you'd expect). They didn't have tours & such, the building was close to a ram shackle but I knew a couple local gals who worked there; so, I went inside a couple times - quite the factory worker environment. I don't think I saw a single male. There must have been 100 women sitting in front of sewing machines. Pretty crazed, but pretty cool, really. Mountain women is what they were. It's closed now.

Well, it looks like there's more inclement weather on the immediate horizon for us. Forecast is for 2 to 6-inches of snow from midnight tonight through tomorrow. Yuk! Daughter is supposed to take her youngest, Keegan, to a 2-day hockey tournament 2-hours west of us in Jefferson City on Saturday, while her husband is taking Gabe 2-hours north on Saturday for 2 games in Springfield, IL. I'm certainly hoping for as little snow as possible!

Jim Prayers and thoughts sent

Greg and Mrs Nice save. There has to be some type of switch in that circuit. Thermal, normally open, one would think off hand.

Norm - My Grandma Nixon worked in what was termed a "Hosiery Mill" in Dayton, Tennessee in the late1920's until 1946 when the family moved north to Michigan. Named appropriately The Dayton Hosiery Mill. At it's peak it employed over 500 people, 97% women. They made all manner of socks and stockings for men and women. The plant was in operation for 105-years before shutting down for good around 2018.

Keith- You're right of course. My daughter and her husband have pretty good heads on their shoulders and I don't really think they'd put the kids at risk out on the road if the conditions were iffy. Plus, these Jr. Sports Leagues seem to err on the side of caution and cancel or postpone events if conditions are risky. Of course I'd speak up and voice my opinion if I thought Mom and Dad were putting the boys at risk.

Some young minds may seem to think the team needs me at what ever cost. The opportunity I was speaking of is to teach common sense, live to play another day.

Up nort here our road crews have the roads cleared and salt the bejebuz out on the roads, however there are some that can not keep under 90 even on bridges and off ramps...those are the idiots that can make a good day end in a hurry with no re-run to be had.

Stay safe and enjoy

Jim, I hope it gets easier.

Mike/Norm, my grandma's house had two built in electric heaters in the main floor's baths. I remember using them in the 80s. They redid the house in the 60s, and it stayed that way for the next 60 years. Heat lamps or bulbs, which is what Mike posted, are typically on timers. Those are more modern, and I've seen them in houses that are more comfortable and less formal. They fit in with the hot tub, deep carpet, TV in every room crowd. On the other hand, I do like the vents with built in heaters and lights. Maybe not the nightlight. I'll have to research that for my new place.

I decided, with 4 to 7 of the white stuff incoming, that I would leave my abode today. I toboganned down my still snowed driveway and out into the dry street with my truck. Almost slid into stuff going to get my tow strap from the pole barn, which I did not need to go get. Headed out of town on the interstate, then back down into Boonville to my new place. All roads were very nice. The neighbor had a pull out for the mailbox plowed, so I parked there, walked across the street to my gate and walked back to my berm house to confirm heat and power were fine. They were, I checked level in the propane tank, took pictures of the snow, and left. I went to two different Schnucks grocery stores as I wanted some specific stuff not in my local one, but there was mass pandelerium with the storm coming, so I had to go find the missing stuff. Got gas, went home, and banged up my driveway at about 15 mph and made it. That trick works about 4 times, then it turns to ice and my truck can't do it. Planning on staying put for a while.

I replaced the thermostat switch in my fridge tonight. I believe the contacts were sticking open and not allowing it to start back up on a new cycle. Seems to be behaving, it is cooling down. There is a long capillary tube it gets its temp from. Interesting thing.

My brother is being dumb. He is still so headstrong he fights the weather. He and his friend are going camping in a snowstorm. I'm trying to avoid the ****.

Good morning everyone.

Not much going on. Everyone is yammering about the weather. It's snowing pretty good outside, which is no big deal to me but everyone else is all up in arms. Probably haven't seen it since they were little children. There's talk of us going home before it gets too bad. Give me a break.

John that's a nice looking spread. Love the big barn.

Greg that's a cool look. Almost looks pink. Those are lights like what used to be in hotel bathrooms and the pool rooms.

Chris safe travels to your people. I don't ever remember not going somewhere because of the weather. Of course I just wouldn't know it because my parents never asked our opinions on anything.

I looked at a house once and when you walked in it smelled like gas. Walking through the house, every room had a heater like that one Norm posted, either in the wall or freestanding next to the wall. One or more were obviously leaking. It was a neat old house with beautiful woodwork. Didn't buy it.

Well, work has ground to a halt, everyone is going out and taking movies on their phones of the snow, and then comparing them. They are all the same. Lots of people are complaining because we haven't been sent home. WTF. Why does snow outside have anything to do with work inside. Ug.

Okay I think I'll have a snack. Have a great Friday everyone.

John - Very nice piece of property. You're going to love that place. Nice repair on the refrigerator. Awesome pictures.
Mike - Same here - everyone yapping about the cold like it's the end of the world.

Very minor ice accumulation 0.10" expected tonight, the slightest possibility of snow <1". Temperatures will actually begin to rise by early tomorrow morning. Much of this is the result of residing close to the big bathtub (Atlantic Ocean) where these events often meet the warm water contained in the bathtub & stall out. So, at the moment one more night of very cold weather. Last night's windchill was ~16°F. Combination Heat Pumps don't much like this cold weather. My Trane is ~19 years old, but I've maintained it quite well - replacing various components over the years rather than opting out for a new one. House was originally (1930) heated solely/entirely by one large fireplace + five wood burning stoves (one each/room) one was the cook stove/oven>converted to home heating oil (1950s?)>AC add-on installed 1960s?>new AC R&R indoor blower/furnace (2001) w/ conversion to LP>R&R/install all new duct work/plenum, remove LP tank/blower/furnace, install central electric combination heat pump (2009). At 3am in the morning last night you could hear a snail fart 10 miles away - DEAD SILENT.

Most of the people left about an hour ago. The lead said there hadn't been an official decision but if we wanted to leave we had to use our own time. The inspectors left, the department across the hall left, and our weak foreman still has not said anything. There is no work, no one to do any work, and just a handful of us still here. WTF. Mom called and said there was a good three inches of snow on the back porch. This is nothing to me but most everyone else have lost their minds. This is typical weak management Delta. I don't want to make a decision that will be frowned upon by the higher ups. Got news for you, the higher ups didn't come in today.

I suppose I could mosey on down to the roll up door and see what it's doing outside. I suspect we'll leave around lunchtime. I might make it to Awful house.

Hey guys,

John - Looks like a really nice piece of property you purchased, I love it!

Norm - I'm sure you're not enjoying your cold snap. I hope you get a minimal amount of ice and it melts off quickly.

Mike - Safe travels getting home if anything is sticking on the roads. I know you know how to drive in it, it's all the other crazies you have to worry about.

We've got about 3 new inches here since last night and still snowing. The new snow is what can be seen on the top of the gas firepit in the 1st pic bellow. Will be running the snowblower again later today when it stops snowing, it still coming down steady right now. Our road is just wet right now because they salted heavy last night. Yuk.

Mike should be getting ice accumulation about now. Roads will be a complete mess in ATL; but, turning to light rain after the ice passes late this afternoon into early evening so tomorrow shouldn't be an issue.

Galoshes -Many of us wore them routinely.

Each winter I think of the piles of boots at our back door & anyone's back door you had to take off & put back on each time you entered/left a building. I think the terms for those areas have been relegated to a foyer (at the front door entrance) or the mud room (at the rear door entrance), that is if a home had either one or the other or both. Of course, an attached garage entrance was an option when the garage door was open.

It isn't doing anything right now. The roads are gross. We left work around 1030. The expressways had several issues so I opted to take surface roads. Took me maybe an hour to get home. I wasn't in a hurry. The only mishap I saw was about a mile from home, a guy in a Prius took the opposite ditch going down a hill. I think the diesel fuel needed for the wrecker to get him out will negate the electric savings of his trip today.

Chris it's too bad they salted the roads. You could take the 442 out and do donuts.

Norm, grandma always said don't go out without your rubbers.

Got some laundry going and have several things to do inside today. Later I'll go to Mom's. I spoke with her earlier and she said Tiger is having a blast playing in the snow.

Mike - You're right I forgot they also called them rubbers. In H.S. Mom would be right there at the front door when I left to go out for the evening "You just remember, every drugstore sells protection" - talk about embarrass the **** out me.

I suppose it is that I am financially secure, so I speak from a position where I can afford to say it, but I have always thought men who will not take a stand in the workplace because they are afraid of reprisals from above are bitches. The military has something called command initiative, which is where the local commander gets to, and is expected to, make the call. This is being ruined by global communications where people in Washington are second guessing local commanders on the ground, but it was a good idea to start with. I got to the point with my managers that I simply would not call them, as I knew they would be of no help and just try to blame me for everything.

Chris, I think we have a few new inches here.

Norm, I don't own overshoes, but I probably should get some. In this new house I am going to build, I will need to spend time laying it out with the right rooms. I think I may need a cloakroom and a mud room.

There were a couple select instances during my several careers I took firm stands in the workplace, I gave two ***** about reprisals.

Overshoes, galoshes & the like. Boy Howdy you where them on a dairy/swine farm. Even with automated barn cleaners, you damn Skippy better have a pair shoveling/slopping through the **** - they stayed down at the barn(s).

Bahaha Norm, did she say that with your date standing there?

John our manager is indeed a bitch. He couldn't decide his way out of a wet paper bag. I don't know why he is even a manager. Well, yes I do. I hope he doesn't stick around too long.

I'm trying to figure out how to add a mudroom into the existing footprint. I also need a door upstairs to access the back yard. The space will probably be carved out of the garage.

Mike - A couple things to consider: (1) Upstairs door. Easiest location is often where a window frame already exists. Since windows generally will have already been 'framed' into the existing wall, it's easiest to remove an existing window to frame in a new door in that location. (2) Mud room. Obviously location is important, but try not to overthink it. Two scenarios generally: (a) Are you going to give up/use preexisting internal/interior space (be far the easiest); or, (b) create an external/exterior (mud) room viewed as a exterior room addition - you'll need to accommodate/build/attach a roof (overlap) to the existing exterior/external framing of the house & roof line. In the same vane, consider location of a preexisting window (or door) frame.

Happy to hear today was better. Once the (vein/artery) ports are installed, it's like loading Plug-n-Play software on a PC, eh? Have a great weekend, Jim. Thinking of ya.

Jamesbo where did you get a heated vest? One of them might be nice at work. It's always cold in the shop and I have my coat on all day.

Norm the only window in the back of the house is over the sink in the kitchen. I want to put in a door and then a small porch and stairs that go down into the back yard. There is a small laundry room built into the garage, I may move the laundry downstairs and use the small room for a mudroom, and put in a door and the stairs. There is nothing about this house that works for me. I was in a hurry to move out of my other house, and I like this neighborhood, and there's a lift in the garage. How funny, I still go to that other house every day.

Okay here is something that bugs the hell out of me. Is it a rule that two light switches that run the same fixture have to be going different directions? If the light is off, I want both switches pointed down. Inevitably, one will be up and one will be down. Even both switches pointed up would be better than one up and one down. Every double switch I've ever seen is like that. Do electricians just like screwing with OCD people?

Going to Mom's in a minute. Everything is still dripping but the problem will be at midnight when I come home. Everything will be frozen and more slippery. Eh, I'll be careful. Maybe the Prius is still in the ditch.

You've mentioned this in a previous post - I chuckled - didn't think it warranted me posting since you didn't directly ask a question. The simple answer to your question is - no. These are three-way switches with travelers between them. Even if you reverse the travelers one side will be up the other side will be down relative to ANY on/off position. Sorry, buddy.

Norm I don't remember saying anything before. Very possible that I did. If the light is on I know one will be up and one will be down. If the light is off they both need to be down. I bet I can turn one switch upside down. Hopefully "on/off" isn't embossed on the switch.

Mike - You cannot turn one switch upside down in a traveler circuit between any two switches to achieve both light switches in the same configuration - it CANNOT be done. They used to make a push-button switch to accommodate this type configuration for the incredibly insane OCD population. I think they stopped making them.

BTW, ON/OFF is not embossed on any switch. It's the "cover" plate which would contain any notion of being ON/OFF.

Mike - I found out early in the managerial part of my career that it was always easier to ask for forgiveness, than permission. You can't manage effectively, and shouldn't be managing at all, if you're always waiting on someone above you to make your decisions for you. Making and successfully implementing decisions are what upper management are paying you for.

We've discussed this previously. The best managers are those who delegate responsibility/authority. The best managers are those who trust, listen and abide by those they have delegated into positions of responsibility/authority.

Jim - You just made my day! I'm so glad you found a way to stay warmer during your treatments. I'm sure it's a bitch, but hang in there buddy, we're all rooting for ya!
