64 olds 98 homemade front disc brakes

I was going to get a disc brake conversion kit but had time to try to find something to work. Many say nothing with just swap over from another car and conversion kit I found was 1000 or more. So, i pressed off my front drums, cut out center of jeep commander front rotor to fit hub ( jeep used 5x5), used step drill on studs to allow rotor to sit flush on hub, and got used caliper, mounting brackets, 4 bolts and hoses and 1/4 inch steel plate and made it fit my spindle. Took some cutting and drilling, spacer and had to shave part of spindle but worked out. I have also made mine a 4 speed and i have 18 inch jeep wheels on it.
for less than 200 I have front disc brakes with my existing hub, wheel bearings,

Assembled off car to verify all straight

This shows steel plate. Used cardboard as template then did holes one at a time to verify square with rotor and pads sit proper on rotor.
etc...i have since put in longer bolt and all is painted. This is the raw assembly before going back on car and before passenger side done

Assembled with pads and wheel on but still off car.

assembled on car. Still need to shave off Jeep logo on caliper but it's together and on car.

Interesting. Those nuts holding the spacer in place look dangerous.

Nice work, but you should do a little math first. The single piston calipers on the 1969-70 Olds full size cars used 2.935" diameter pistons. That provided 6.77 sq in of piston area. Those Jeep calipers have dual 1.89" pistons, which only provide a total of 5.61 sq in of area. That's a 20% reduction in brake force for the same pedal pressure.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Since you used the OE spindles you should still be able to run the OE speedometer too.

Are those the OE wheels? I'd be afraid something wouldn't fit.

Not oe wheels, jeep 18 inch wheels, this was a much easier conversion and other spindles do not fit 64 98. So would have to fabricate mounting brackets anyway, and the other calipers may not have worked with these rotors which required 5x5 pattern, or would have to use old eldorado rotors which have to small a hat to fit original hub. I have more pad contact to rotor this way. Nut holding spacers are fine. They reach in plenty far enough.

I have not driven it yet. Working on passenger side. But as far as math goes, out the window. Clutch and brake pedals from nova, booster and master from 04 ranger. It's 350 with aluminum heads so 300 lbs lighter than 394 plus slm jim gone obviously with the muncie

in there.
i just content with the manual shift 64 98. I got it missing the engine, sitting in a field rotting away for 18 years. I had small block done and had trans and clutch pedals. Had drive shaft made and used a crown vic crossmemver to hold up trans.

Well, when you rescue a car from being that far gone, I guess it earns you the right to do whatever you want with it. Just make sure it's safe.

Quick update, been a while. Yes, the car stops well with from disc brakes from jeep. maybe there are better set ups but, used original spindles, pplates inexpensive and jeep parts readily available. no high speed or long distance yet but drives well shifts well, clutch feels good, etc...

Good for you, a car should be driven and enjoyed. Stay safe and enjoy it.
