Olds 455 ring gap question

Ok, crank is torqued down with new ARP bolts to ARP spec. I have a set of KB277-60 pistons and cast Hasting rings 661 I believe. Top ring gaps are at .020 to .021 within Hasting gap spec but KB is showing .026 Hastings was .014 to .022 for there specs. Which way should I go?

You need to go with the KB specs. Those pistons hold a lot of heat and need a larger gap. Improper ring gap causes major problems with those pistons

Thanks, I noticed the KB rings have a moly top ring different from the Hastings rings I have. Do the specs for ring gap for the KB277 hold true for both ring types? Probably overthinking it but thought I would ask before putting it together. I try to live by the 6 Ps.

Material is irrelevant other than for wall finish.

Just have to ask why on earth you would use a cast ring instead of moly ? That being said you definitely have to go with the KB specs on ring gaps. I usually add a couple of thousandths to that.

Ok, what ringset do you suggest? I see Hastings sell a chromemoly "coated" set. Researched KB but can't find the .060 rings on there site. Part number would be great.

I use the Hastings Moly rings in just about every naturally aspirated engine I build. They seat while on the engine stand as long as the cylinders are finished correctly and last forever.

My math says .027 for the top ring gap. You mentioned to open them up a few more thou though right.
