Which headers 1972 Cutlass convertible 455

Hi there,
I've to order headers and want to make sure that they fit and the quality is right.

I've converted an 1972 Cutlass convertible from 350 to 455 with the SB frame and engine mounts, does someone know which headers will fit good and which from the ones below are the best quality for the money.

Here are my options.
  • Hooker competition headers (painted or coated)
  • Summit Racing Street & Strip Coated
  • Flowtech

I've to order from Summit because there the shipping to Germany is the cheapest.

I will use the 3" system from Pypes (dont know if Street pro or Race pro, depends how loud the Street pro are)

THX and Regards

SRV8

The Flowtechs are about the cheapest and will fit, they (bigblock ones) hang a little low in my oppinion and the proportioning valve will need to be moved from the inside of the frame to the top of the frame but all in all they are good for the price. Also, I've only used the coated ones and have one set in use for about ten years or so and they are still in good condition I dont believe the regular painted ones would last. This is based off my personal experience with 3 or 4 sets of them so far on 70-72 cars. Hope this helps

Hi Qwik71442,
my car is lowered in the front and back about 2" do I get an street clearance problem because you said they hang low.
I use an 8 quart Oil pan, I think this is 2" lower than stock.

THX SRV8 and greetings from Germany

I have the 8 quart pan on one I'll compare or snap pictures so you can to see how much they hang down compared to the 8 quart pan. They are about level with the oil pan-see pictures.

Qwik71442,
thank you very very much for your help
that was exactly what I'm locking for ;-)

I will order also the coated Flowtechs.

They fit and are not lower than the pan ;-) and they are cheap

I went with hookers........Been on my car for almost tens years,Those flowtechs wont last ten years.....

Either way i think you'll have to relocate your brake preportioniong valve for header clearance.....

I've had Hedman and they were ok...didn't hang too low and they were reasonably sturdy. I have Thorley's now and they are better, thick flange and don't hang low at all. Next set for me is going to be American Racing stainless headers.

I would at least go with the Hookers and have them coated. In any case, you are going to need to push the proportioning valve up so that it's on top of the frame so that it doesn't rub against the header.

I used Doug's headers - only thing that had to be relocated was the brake proportioning valve.
