1958 371 Oil Pump

As part of the rebuild of the 371, I decided to tear down the oil pump. I thought I would investigate what displacement it was.
After some calculations I came up with 2 cubic inch per revolution. If we assume an idle speed of 750 RPM then since the distributor turns half the speed of the engine, a 2 cubic inch gear pump will produce 750 cubic inches per minute. Since there are 231 cubic inches per gallon that amounts to a flow of over 3 GPM. That also means that the pump would be producing a flow of over 20 GPM at 5000 RPM.
Now you know more about the oil pump and flow through the engine you probably wanted to.
